I've noticed that the Basque country seems to have outstanding venues built for their community…read morecenters. San Sebastian has the Kursaal and Bilbao has the Euskalduna Jauredia. Primarily a conference center and concert hall, it also houses restaurants, and various performing arts. Near the old Euskaldana shipyard, it's an ever evolving structure (a la Sagrada Familia in Barcelona). Being next to the water it provides great views of Bilbao and it's pushing of modernity.

The place is incredible. The architecture is a masterpiece and a source of pride for people from the Basque country. The most interesting thing about this theater is that it was built from an old shipyard. The place was demolished and renovated and now ranks among the top attractions. The play was incredible. The character of Violetta Valery, the courtesan, was executed with complete mastery. The place, the play, everything was perfect. I have to admit that I completely have fallen in love with this country.

The public library was awesome! 3 floors of great books and I spent quite a bit of time reading Asterix and Tintins including some you don't get in the US. The swimming pool on the terrace was incredible, make sure to check out how it looks from the ground floor. They also had some cool art exhibitions. And everything was free! Say what! Lucky people of Bilbao!
