Such an amazing place with an amazing history. At one time a mosque (expanded 3 times -it's huge!) then later after the Muslims were pushed out, a massive cathedral was built in the center and the structure converted into a house of worship for Christianity. It is said it can hold 30,000-not a typo-people!
Since it was built in many different centuries you see in the old part where columns from dismantled Roman buildings were repurposed to hold the red and white arches made from brick and limestone.
We visited in April with a private guide, because I feel you get so much more out of a visit from a live person who can adapt based on time and interest and we were not disappointed. We learned so many interesting fact in this way and I noticed at times exhausted travelers straining to listen in to our guides descriptions.
A must visit if you are in the area read more
