Came here with my bf on a Friday afternoon after shopping downtown. It took us 20 minutes to walk here but I had to try it because I heard about this place on the TV show "Sisters Baker" and that it was famous for their London Fog cake. Cafe was very clean and modern. We got there at around 1400 which was good because everyone was still at work or at school so we got to sit by the window near the huge plant! My bf had their large mocha which was absolutely amazing. It had a good balance of coffee and chocolate. For dessert, I just wanted to try their famous London Fog cake but my bf also insisted on getting the lemon meringue tart as well =_=. The lemon meringue tart wasn't my bf's favorite because it was very sour for him but I didn't mind it. The sweet meringue on top balanced the tartness of the lemon really well. I just wished the base layer of the tart was flakier and crunchier because it was kinda hard to cut into the tart without having to put some effort in it. The London Fog, however, was absolutely delicious!! My bf really liked this one. It was so moist and you could taste the London Fog in between the cake layers. The cake was also very light which helped balanced the richness of the ganache. Overall, it was definitely worth the walk even my bf concurred! When I had their sticky bun for the first time It was more like 5stars with fresh and bunch of goodie toppings... but second and third time I tried was sort of taste like yesterday's bun as well as less toppings of nuts and it was little lack of taste rather tasted like yeasty... cupcakes... it's another just rich good cupcakes nothing new... so as cookies... This bakery is a welcome addition to the Downtown Eastside (it's just west of the No. 5 Orange strip bar, which is located at Main & Powell), joining a number of new businesses. It opened just over a week ago and I've managed to limit myself to three visits. So far I have had: a salted caramel brownie, a marmalade croissant, and a white chocolate bread pudding. Plus a co-worker brought in some amazing herb-cheese brioches which i was forced to test for research purposes. Sublime. Please support this business! I had recently gone to Cadeaux bakery for the purpose of procuring a delicious cake for a birthday. Before ordering a full on cake, I decided to try a slice of their London Fog cake which pretty much blew my mind. The cream was light and airy, the sponge was moist and the filling was not too sweet or heavy with a subtle hint of London Fog. It was everything a divine cake should be. With that taste in mind, I made my order that day, a week in advance from pick up. The cake I picked up certainly looked as perfect as I imagined. Upon cutting into the cake, the layers were all there, but the first forkful wasn't the same decadent cake I had had in store. I can only surmise that perhaps the cake was made too far in advance and sat in refrigeration for too long or maybe someone different had baked this cake. The sponge was definately more dry and harder than I remembered and the filling had a more cloying aftertaste that I would've liked. Only the chantilly cream on the outside was the only reminder of what I had tasted a week ago. Perhaps it was my own fault from having such high expectations during my taste test from a week before, but the lesson of this story is: order and eat fresh. OBSESSED with Cadeaux. The moment I heard that Cadeaux was owned and run by the the pastry chef of Chambar, I knew I had to try. Shoutout to SR for taking me here - xoxo! Simple, girly, shabby chic and spacious interior. I love the open kitchen concept so you can see the chefs making your delectable and perfect pastries. They have some nicely fresh made gifts like bags and boxes of truffles, jams, fruit jellies and other treats. Pricey sweets but very worth the money. My new obsession: LONDON FOG CAKE... yes, an earl grey tea latte CAKE. Life changing. Light and fluffy. Not too sweet but the flavor is still there. Delicious. Just right. Yes, a slice is $5.99 but first of all, where else can you get a perfect london fog cake and secondly... whatever, it's life changing - what's $6 in your life?! Their truffles are exquisite - rich and very decadent. I don't even like ginger but their ginger rose white chocolate truffle was delicious. A little overly sweet but I think that's the nature of the truffle... I wanted to try more but just had no room - its ok, next time! :) The girl at the cash register was SUPER sweet and patient. Cadeaux Bakery made our wedding cake and man, was it good! It looked absolutely gorgeous and tasted delicious. If you are considering doing a cake tasting, do it! It was the funnest experience and if you're lucky, you will have some leftover which you can take home and have little cake sandwiches. I really struggled writing this review. I feel as though maybe I'm being too judgie...but here goes. The location is a little out of the way but very cute and clean. It's nice to watch the bakers kneading dough and icing cakes. Selection: the selection is a little disappointing for a bakery. They had all the same croissants (chocolate, almond, ham & cheese), three varieties of cake, cheesecake and a few others. I got two slices of cake: Earl Grey and a Chocolate Ganache. They were just okay. The earl grey lacked flavour and was pretty much a well decorated white cake. The salted caramel brownie I found to be too wet?? The flavour was beautiful but the texture was a bit off. I'm glad that I made the trek to try this bakery. I'm positive that I will not return for a second go. It's too far out of the way for average pastries and cakes. For now, I'll stick with pure bread. read more

This place has been on my bucket list for a while, however, for some reason it got forgotten along the way. I was recently reminded when I read Kenneth's recent review to put this place back on my visible bucket list. The minute you walk inside it is aesthetically pleasing and pleasant like a euro bakery. A fair cry in atmosphere and decor from the area that it is situated in. The lady at the til was very sweet. I left without my umbrella and she flagged me down the street which was appreciated. Here is the problem = way too over priced. $6-7 for meringue? Everything was slightly over priced with average taste which is why I can't make this my go-to spot as I was badly wanting it to be. read more

I am very rarely overly impressed by food. Every time someone tells me "oh my god, this place has THE BEST blah blah...", I pretty much tune out. But I have to tell you, this bakery is damn good. The bread pudding. Oh my god... the bread pudding. In fact, whenever I'm in the area, I simply have to go in and get a bunch of pastries. Delicious almond croissants, ganaches... The decor inside is neat and their coffee is good too. You can see into the kitchen/bakery itself, where industrious-looking chefs in white outfits are rolling the dough, stuffing it with things, and what have you. Service is great for what it is - a bakery. So yes, don't expect the girl at the till to know every pastry in the world, she didn't major in freaking culinary arts. It's not cheap, but if you can afford starbucks, then fear not. I'd say it's good price for the size of the portions. It's great to go with friends and share things, this way you get to try more goodies. Anyway, as you can see, I love it. I am almost sorry I wrote this review... I really hate leaving bad reviews, especially when the place is so adorable. I am a baker and my husband loves London Fog tea, so I had the idea of making a London Fog cake. When I searched for it, I saw it had been done and this bakery makes it. We stopped by and got a slice, along with a lemon tart and some sugar plums. The cake wasn't bad at all, but I didn't taste Earl Grey at all, nor would I want my own version of the cake to taste like this one. The tart, on the other hand, was inedible. It tastes like metallic eggs, a sign of bad technique. The lemon flavor was good, but completely overshadowed by the metallic taste. The sugar plums, too spicy for my taste. read more

I enjoyed the clean and bright interior of the bakery. There is a limited amount of seating, but we managed to get a table to devour our ice cream sundaes. It was heavenly and left us wanting more. On different occasions, I tried their chocolate cheesecake and their chocolate croissant. While the croissant was underwhelming, the chocolate cheesecake was divine. It bordered on being just a little bit too sweet and a little bit too rich, but those are boundaries I am often keen on pushing. A friend was having her birthday meal and she requested a carrot cake for dessert. I called the day before placed my order and picked it up the next day. At first I wasn't overly impressed with the cake but that could have just had a little to do with the hefty cost. Once I picked it up to carry out I realized this could be something special. The cake proved to be a hit and was worth splurging. The icing was delicious and not overly sweet, the cake was moist and packed full of carrot, nuts and raisins. Will be back to try out more of their baking and will be hinting at getting my Bday cake there next year. read more

You get what you pay for....and Cadeaux Bakery is worth it! Some items are a steal, some are not. I'm not a fan of baked goods, typically. However, I consider myself a convert when it comes to this place. The establishment is open-concept, you can watch the bakers hard at work. Very industrial, I like it. There are a few sets of tables and chairs where you can enjoy your purchases. This is definitely a BAKERY with seating, not a cafe. Cool. There's also a small area of pre-packaged treats that make great gifts at the office. I've tried numerous items now.... Favorites: cassis jelly squares, peanut butter pie, sticky toffee pudding (in sea of treacle caramel....add scoops of Ben & Jerry's caramel hat trick!), lemon cherry cup of goodness Enjoying: salted caramel brownie, cheese & onion scone, raspberry meringue swirls I was not thrilled with the chocolate pistachio cherry cake - $6 and flavorless. Stopped by here totally unplanned today. Area is a little obscure but pretty close to main street station. I had the london fog cake and the almond croissant. The almond croissant is really good, it's not super special or anything but I was pleasnantly surprised, As for the london fog cake, it was really good except I didn't really taste too much of the london fog. It took me a few bites before I even got the first hint of london fog. Would have liked it better if there was more. I will probably be back too try out the london fog again. Today is International Womans Day and as a woman I was tasked to not got to work (I did), protest for women's rights (I did not) and not spend any money today (I did). Well I really wanted a cup of tea and some chocolate and realized I was going to be near the best ultimate most amazing mind blowing flavourful bakery that exists in the world (and yes I have eaten pastries in Paris, Rome, Luzerne, Sydney, LA, so I do have my own experiential perspective on the global sweet market) and that bakery is Cadeaux Bakery in Gastown and just happens to be owned by a woman. Well, I walked in and there she and her both male and female staff, working away like I was, on this monumental of days. I mean if I'm not going to do what the protocol is supposed to be to support my own suffrage then I may as well support the other women of the world who are working hard to make their own way. I was not dissappointed (of course I never am at her heavenly cloud). I had an Earl Grey Tea - whole leaf and full of flavour and a slice of Raspberry Latte Cake. It was the most moist cake I've ever had (well actually she made our wedding cake so in all fairness I have only had cake this moist from Cadeaux Bakery and no other). The flavour of the raspberries in one of the layers was strong and tart and then offset by the sweetness of the chooclate buttercream filling and then the raspberry jelly layer on top was another treat for my tongue. Each bite popped just about every endorphin I have. What a rush. Delicious and contrary and compatible all the flavours mixing and contrasting all at the same time. Congratulations Elanore for building such an amazing business with the best quality ingredients and knowledge and skill. I am proud to say that I supported you and your business on this fine day. I ordered a layered vanilla cake from here and it was so dreamy! I got the 8-10 people size, but probably should've done a size lower because there was heaps left over (no complaining there though!). The vanilla and pink frosted layers were so delicious. I recommend leaving it out for a while because the icing tastes a bit too buttery when it's still cold, and I wish the colour had been a little bit darker. This morning I called from California to see if Cadeaux could deliver an assortment of pastries to a vendor my company uses, located down the street from them. The gentleman (Blair) who answered the call was very professional and kind and helpful. He took my information, said he'd check in with his supervisor about whether or not they could deliver pastries to our vendor down the street, and that he would call me back within twenty minutes. I think he phoned me in five with a "yes!" We are thrilled that they were so accommodating. I only wish I could experience the pasties and cookies in person. Very meh. I had the earl grey cake which was covered in icing and didn't taste like much except for that one small layer of chocolate and tea infused ganache. Huge serving, but also expensive. It tasted like dry Betty Crocker cake with a few hazelnuts thrown in ( if you were lucky to get one). I think this is one of the best bakeries in town. I've had their london fog cake as a birthday cake before and absolutely loved it. Other notable favourites include: the ham and cheese croissant, the brownies, the quiche and the nanaimo bars which taste like the real deal and may be the best I've ever had. I'm genuinely confused by the terrible reviews about this place -- I've come back often, and if I had ever had a bad experience that would probably be it for me. But they knock it out the park each time. I enjoy the open concept of the establishment because you can watch them bake in real time. read more

Oh, it is about time that Vancouver has a high end bakery at the end of Gastown. The area of Powell and Main is looking better now that there are more new businesses like Cadeaux is part of the neighbourhood. The place is clean and modern. You can see the big open kitchen. The main chefs are from some of Vancouver's most impressive restaurants. The dessert range from cakes, cupcakes, variety of brownies, cookies, truffle chocolates, granola, and so much more. I tried a few, including: chocolate pistachio biscotti, salted caramel brownie, brioche and some truffles. The flavours were pleasant as they weren't overly sweet. My favourite savoury item is the goat cheese croissant. My favourite sweet item is the London Fog cake. The prices were pricey but, for the quality, fair. For a modest income earner, it's a great place to treat yourself once in a while or impress some out of town guests. The americanos my friend and I had was really watered-down tasting, which was too bad, because with JJ Bean, you know you can get a good cup of joe from that. Why do I go to Cadeaux Bakery upwards of twice a week but only give it three stars? Well, first of all, my best friend loves the place. If I try to suggest another establishment/scenario to said friend, I'm almost immediately greeted with a chorus of boos. Sample Conversation: Me: How about going to Chinatown for a coconut bun and milk tea instead? Friend: Boo! Me: How about that bakery everyone is raving about on Hastings St? Friend: Boo! Me: How about the baking school on Granville Island? It's cheaper and there's more variety? Friend: Boo! Me: How about you and I bake some cookies and we stay in and watch Coronation St on the telly and wash away all of the sugar and good/bad telly with some whiskey? Friend: Boo! Me: Alright, Cadeaux it is then? Friend: Yay! So, primarily, I do it to hang out with my BFF. And, to be fair, I alway start out enjoying my snacks there, but however, my critical, ex-baker mind always ends up kicking in... "Why is the sponge in the London Fog Cake so dry and dense? Wouldn't a moister sponge be more complimentary to the flavourful milk chocolate tea ganache and the (admittedly perfect) whipping cream?" The sponge cake is so dry that I was convinced on two occasions that I must've been the unlucky recipient of a stale cake. The third visit, however, I received a freshly made, unsliced cake, the coveted end piece slathered in whip cream! Alas, the sponge was still dry and dense. Or "Why is the dark chocolate mousse spread on so thick that it totally overpowers any of the hazelnut flavour in the hazelnut praline cake?" On the plus side, however, this cake, however, has a perfectly moist sponge. I have had the chocolate covered cheesecake (which was lovely in texture and taste but I could not get over the lack of crumb crust), ginger cookie, croissants and the scones, of which the latter three were all very good. I now solely eat one of those when I am there. Maybe one of the issues is that I once worked in the industry and my standards are a little bit skewed in that I'd rather have well-done, folky, every day baking fare (ie. coconut buns) than mediocrely-done mid-high end fare (ie. the cakes at Cadeaux). Also, although the service is always competent, there is this air of froideur that always slightly dampens the customer service I receive there. Like, I guess I'd say I'm a regular, but there's never a personal touch to the service, never a "Nice to see you again!" or "How are you?" I get the feeling that as this area gentrifies rapidly, that myself, being a student who can't afford to tote around a Michael Kors bag with the seemingly obligatory tea cup dog hanging out of it, that I'm simply not their preferred type of customer. Again, perhaps froideur is just the norm for their service, but I can't help but feel a little bit put out by it each time I visit. On the plus side however, I get to have good times with my BFF, which is always wonderful, no matter the venue! read more

Found this gem on the recommendation of a foodie friend of mine. The first thing to strike me was the eclectic decor with the white walls and the collection of dainty antique China adorning the shelves. The display case was a feast for the eyes and my mind started doing somersaults trying to decide what decadence to indulge in. My friend and I chatted with Eleanor Chow, pastry chef and co-owner of the bakery who recommended the Copa Banana pastry. It was a layered dessert with layers of banana bread, coconut mousse, and topped with chocolate ganache. We sat down to share a piece with some loose leaf tea. Yum-my! Not too sweet, and the banana and coconut/chocolate flavors married beautifully. There were so many other things to try, but we were too full to indulge any further. So decided to take home a package of chocolate pistachio biscotti and a croissant for later. Can't wait to try them! Unlike Thierry, this place is far from pretentious and less expensive. I just happened to be sitting down and reading the Sun's weekend review of local Pastry places, highlighting Cadeaux, so I am dissapointed after reading about the pedigree of the kitchen by the mediocrity of the food. I should have guessed there was a problem when I asked if they did Pain au Chocolate and the server didn't know what I was talking about. 2 of us tried these items and came up with identical views: The truffle, I think it was basil and lime - good texture, but too sweet; Lemon tarte - again good texture, but not enough lemon; Nutella cookie (with a nutella filling) - Dry!; Ginger cookie - not enough ginger; Chocolate filled croissant (interesting take on a Pain au Chocolate) - texture was more like bread (the folds were there, but I presume the dough had not been sufficiently cold). Sorry, I had really hoped I would be writing a happier review about this place, but there are several other better options in town. I won't be returning soon. read more
