They have a wonderful selection of entertainment to keep anyone amused. Also available is the computer network, connected to t'internet (as it is locally). Some of my colleagues come in just to keep up with their records; putting files onto memory sticks is the best way of keeping track of what you are accomplishing and this library facilitates this. I have always found the staff eager to help and very knowledgeable.

If they havnt got the books you want they order them for you from other libraries and send an email or phone you up when they arrive. plenty of seats are available so you can spend time reading in peace and quiet. The layout of this library is pretty similar to that of Chorlton Library and Didsbury Library - the…read moreonly thing that struck me about this library were the signs warning customers that thieves are in operation in the library. They were especially abundant in the wonderful little area where children can read and play. This upset me, as it was not something I had to worry about on my weekly trips to the library as a kid. So be careful. As it is a Manchester library, you can use the same library card as the Central Library and the other aforementioned libraries and expect the same facilities, eg one hour's free Internet use per day (although there are not as many PCs as in Chorlton Library so be prepared to wait). The library is generally quiet, but not silent, so it's a good place to work if you can no longer stand your housemates' music or you find yourself getting distracted by the Jeremy Kyle show, and you can't be bothered to trek to the University library or into town. In the entrance there is also a useful selection of leaflets about events and goings on at local theatres and museums, and a board which is generally used to advertise English/Spanish/guitar lessons.

I love the architecture of Withington Library alone never mind the mind altering contents…read more In fact this building was designed by Manchester's first city architect (Henry Price) who also designed Manchester's famous Victoria baths as well as Didsbury library a few miles down the road. I couldn't begin to describe it's true style, but it's frontage at least harks back to the classic Roman/Greek style (of course not on the scale of Manchester's main library). It has recently reopened after a 3 month refurbishment although, and perhaps rightly so, they haven't really done a great deal to it bar restore it's natural charm. If you look up as you enter the building you'll be treated to a wonderful glass dome above your head: in fact I've only just discovered this so whether it was 'reanimated' during it's recent clean up I'm not entirely sure. Inside they have an extensive section of computing; a large children's area; books available in many, many languages e.g. Arabic, Bengali, French, Gujarati, Persian, Polish, Chineseand others, easily creating for the area's large cross section of society. There is also a good computer suite (always busy!) for accessing the net and studying should you need to. I tend to hire my Murakami books here and if they don't stock the title you're after they'll take your details and order it in for you. As it happens a guy who works there is fellow Murakami fan so he's gotten most of his back catalogue for me. Alongside the books they have a fairly extensive music collection (mainly CD) and DVD & Video's again they'll order in anything you require (within reason : ) ). I found a bit of Philip Glass and Brain Dance electronica, next to the likes of Bach, Hip Hop and Sade (she always finds her way into libraries doesn't she?). I might even take up the offer of ordering in Lost which I gave up on Sky last yearif there's a cultural drought on I may just pop into the library and hire for a few weeks. Open till 8 most nights of the week but closes early afternoon on Thursday. There is a book reading group, a MP's surgery and various coffee mornings held there too.

Not to be confused with the John Rylands Library on Deansgate, this library is located on the South…read morecampus of the University of Manchester and is a great place for students to find literature for their courses without having to pay the hefty prices of buying new texts from Blackwell's. I missed my library tour in fresher's week therefore I was always completely disoriented when it came to exploring this library. I mainly stuck to blue 2 and 3 where the books on languages and linguistics are kept, occasionally branching out to green or orange and getting lost in the labyrinth of corridors before finding somewhere to sit. I tended to avoid the library in exam time as the chaotic atmosphere and queues for the computers (when you really need to look something up and half the students are on facebook...grr) are irritating and not conducive to revision. The short loan section is on the ground floor and is really useful to find texts which have all been taken out in the normal library. I learnt to photocopy and return the texts straight away as the fines are hefty and soon mount up at £1 a day. You can then reward yourself with a coffee in the little café next door to that section. My favourite memory of the library was as part of a tutorial for my course when we got to go to into a special little room tucked away in a corner. The room was complete with a lady with white gloves who showed us some of the earliest forms of European printing including Gutenberg's Bible, which I think had been brought over from the other John Rylands library. Wow! If there's anything specialist and delicate that you'd like to see then you can make an appointment at the front desk.

Lucky for me that the Bolton Bus Station is right across the street from the Library. I love this little crescent area, although traversing the street can be a bit hazardous with no lights and seemingly no hint of what drivers have the right of way. Anyway, this building houses the library... AND the museum, aquarium, and tourist information. A great way to get traffic through the building and to the library, but as another reviewer mentioned, it is quite noisy for your average library. That's why I took a star off because I am one of those people that enjoys reading and browsing through books in quiet at the library. For me a library should be an escape from the hustle and bustle outside. That said, one of the staff members who was helping me did tell off another patron for using his mobile phone in the computer area and asked him to head to a designated area for mobile phone use. So at least they are trying to contain the noise. While I didn't spend much time browsing the selection of books, I did get to have a look around and it certainly looks well stocked, but you never really know until you come in with a specific book in mind. Not sure how it is for research purposes, but it seemed quite busy with people looking through books, DVDs, and surfing the net. There were lots of staff and they were all helping other patrons and it was quite nice to see. The staff seemed very keen to help and were extremely friendly. I headed off to the right to to desk near the computers. A member of staff explained the computer system to me, printing prices, etc. You can book a computer for one hours use and if you are just doing something quick, then you also have an option for an impromptu 15 minute use. Printing in black and white is 10p and payment is collected when you collect your print job at the desk. I don't have a library card, so they let me sign in as a guest, you just need to sign in and provide and address and a member of staff will log you on. The computers and internet seemed to be pretty quick, which is always nice to know if you need to use them. The library also has wifi so if you do not want to use their computers, you can ask a member of staff and they can provide you with the information. On my way out, I stopped to look at the tourist information. They have some great resources for days out and even larger holiday booklets for much of the UK. Next to the tourist information is a section of DVDs and if you move closer to the door, there is an area with local announcements/advertisements, but also binders full of information on clubs, organizations, etc. that you can join. Lovely! If you travel upstairs you'll find the museum and aquarium. Must come back and check that out.

As well stocked as this library is, it feels very modern and cheap now. Even the bookcases look…read morelike they're from IKEA. It's also not revered as a traditional library in the sense that it can get very noisy, people talking and shouting, children running around screaming and laughing, and sounds from the computers which people are using. Shame really. But if you're just looking for books to take out with you, rather than sitting and relaxing and reading, then this place is probably okay for you.

Leek Library has recently been refurbished and is now excellent. The layout has been vastly…read moreimproved and the range of books is much better than it used to be. There is a section with computers for those who need access to the internet, and a good selection of books, including sections for children and teenagers. There is also a good range of audio books and you can rent from a wide selection of DVDs for a small charge.The staff are uniformly helpful and friendly and books can be reserved from other local libraries for a very reasonable fee. Altogether, it is not worth buying your paperbacks when you can get them here for nothing - give it a try!

This is a really good local library as it has really good computer facilities, a great kids…read moreselection to begin with. As long as you are a member you can borrow books and use the computers for an hour at a time free of charge. Printing costs a very small amount and not only is the location of this place great but is accesible for everyone.

The audiobook section is very good,and the rental periods on these are very good, unlike some libraries where they seem to expect you can listen to a book quicker than you can read it! It is located right near to the main free car park in the town centre, and as the whole of sandbach is quite compact it means you can do your shopping and reading all within easy walking distance of your cars. The information point is also good, and better than some towns dedicated information centre!

Check out upstairs where they have a fabulous local history section that you could browse for hours. You can hire DVD's and story CD's too and the choice is excellent. The facilities are clean and welcoming and there are computers that can be hired for use including internet access. The opening hours are really good. They have late night opening and they are also open on a Saturday morning. The main town centre car park is right opposite and it's free so it's easy to get to. They also have a great selection of kids books and on the first Wednesday of every month they have a nursery rhyme and story session for the under 5s one of the staff members even gets his guitar out just lovely!
