We had eaten at two of their locations in the Milwaukee area but not the one in our town. With a City Tin coupon in hand we stopped in for lunch on a Saturday. It was pretty crowded so we opted to eat at the bar versus wait for a table. The bar is big and airy and we had a good time chatting with the bartender and watching the action. Unfortunately they were out of the Luxembourg beer Bofferding so I went with the Milwaukean Bloody Mary. It was quite good and spicy. Even the carrot was hot! We liked the chaser which was one of their exclusive beers - it was a wit. I was really hoping for lunch but of course everyone does brunch so I ordered the brie, ham, and bacon croissant. It was excellent. Even the potatoes were very good. My wife got the quinoa veggie bowl and liked it a lot though it was perhaps a bit spicer than expected. Prices were typical for a place like this. Would like to stop again for dinner or lunch especially in summer since it looks like the outdoor space would be nice. read more

The prices have significantly increased since last year. I get that everyone has had to increase a bit, but here the menu options are about double of what they were before. This used to be a favorite spot of ours, but I think we'll look for something more reasonable when shopping around Hilldale. I was very impressed when walking into this building. Beautiful place, inside and out. Great view from the multiple floors and big windows. Really cool atmosphere. The service was friendly. Our waitress did a fine job. Kept our drinks full for the most part. My plate came 5-6 minutes after all the rest, so that made for an awkward wait. The food was fun! They have an array of sauces that were all pretty tasty (Beside the "garlic aioli"). My party got cheese curds for a starter and they were delicious. I, and multiple people at my table got the "Sconnie" burger. I love the name of this burger and I love the idea of it as well. Although I couldn't wait to give this burger a 5 star, it wasn't all that special. My burger, and all the burgers on my side of the table were no doubt over-cooked for one, and the meat was quite dry. There wasn't all that much taste to it. The others at the table felt the same way. I can see how it is easy to get caught up in the epic display of the burger, but it wasn't up to par. If it was a $12 burger, I wouldn't have much of a complaint, but when you charge for a pricey burger, it needs to at least be cooked within the correct range of temp. Overall, I love the idea of the Sconnie burger, the location is beautiful, but the quality of burger and the service could take a step up to match the price. read more

I paid good money for brussels sprouts. There's a lot to like about Café Hollander. The constant lines and wait times over years at all times of day are your clue that the fandom here is going to stay. And this place is huuuuge so capacity seating and a wait let's you know demand is high for valid reasons. I love restaurants that have current menus posted online. This has that. An even better thing about Café Hollander is that on the online menu most of the items have a photo next to the description. So before I went here for the first time, in 2022, I became intrigued by the brussels sprouts. And I paid my actual money for a green vegetable. I'm the type of person for whom dining out is three things: meeting the need for sustenance yes, but it's also a social event, and a time to indulge. Ordering the crispy sprouts was therefore kind of a big deal. And I didn't change a thing on them. I kept the pepitas. I kept the Crema. And I would do it again. After the appetizer, I've had the burger and the jambalaya for entrees. Many other delicious options appear on the menu. Use those pics! Thus far they've been an accurate representation of the dishes as they present at the table. There is a "garage" style heater inside and a small jbl speaker to play music. 5/5 Last year the free drinks were in a carafe, but this year it was ONE individual drink/ person/ choice (2 alcoholic choices NOT on main menu, no substitute). 3/5 Everything else was pay-as-you-go. 3/5 Service -not great. Our dome was on a Friday night, but only 2 of 3 domes in use. We waited 30 min for 8 fizzy drinks. It was so long, they let us stay later (Also, no one had booked after us). I was sad at the service, it dampened our liveliment. We were also very hungry, which was not great. The apps came out after that, about 15 min after ordering. We came here for an evening bite and drinks on a Thursday and the place was insanely busy. They are packed whenever I drive by or try to go here, mostly weeknights. We waited 20 minutes, walked around the mall a bit, but then got a table outside. Our servers were lovely, one (Skylar) was in training, but she pretty much did everything for us herself and was a wonderful server. We had those delicious fries -- get them! And that killer aioli which they should sell by the bottle. The pretzel bites are always good, their sliders were also delish. My only complaint for this place is how expensive it is for sometimes underwhelming portions. It's the surrounding area and how busy it is, I'm sure, but for two people to eat and drink, it always tops $50-60. I'll still come back, with money though! read more

Tipping culture is out of control so don't fall for the tricks that their table side point of sale pulls. The food and service were fine, generally few complaints other than their fries (frites) portions are inconsistent and have gotten smaller. Today's complaint though was their hand held card reader. Pay attention when using it! First and foremost it starts with 25 or 28% tip then 23 or 25% (I didn't pay close enough attention) the third option is 20%. Sorry while in most cases 20% can be standard that should always be the 1st choice. Also their math is wrong, the tip % they present is including tax. Sorry but no you tip on the pre-tax amt not after tax is included. It may sound harsh but that's how it should be don and adding an extra dollar here or there may not sound like a lot but it's adds up over time. Do better! read more

Date night dinner with my wife. The space is large, two stories with a large upstairs patio. We were seated upstairs, with bicycles handing from the ceiling covered in christmas lights for decor. We warmed up with roasted brussel sprouts, which were topped with a creamy parmesan sauce, pickled red peppers, and pumpkin seeds. The sprouts were crispy and just a little oily. This appetizer was probably the best thing either of us ordered. We also got a cone of french fries with curry ketchup and basil aioli. The curry flavor was too strong in the ketchup, but the basil aioli was good, like a mayo-based pesto. My wife's got the grilled cheese and tomato soup. The cheese was smoky, the bread thick and buttery, and the soup was creamy and dense. I ended up liking her food more than mine. I unfortunately thought my entree was the weakest dish of the bunch. I had the chicken bowl, panko-breaded and fried pieces of chicken over a quinoa-veggie pilaf with brocollini and avocado. The chicken was dry, to the point that it was not pleasant to eat. Overall, even though my main dish wasn't the best, it was a positive experience. Our waiter was friendly, helpful, and made some good menu recommendations. This place has been around for a few years now and has always been a good option for American food, and they have a large beer selection. They have a second floor patio that's open during the warmer months as well as a ground floor patio area. For my most recent visit, my friends and I reserved one of the winter globes outside. Fyi, it is a bit pricey ($100 + service/experience fees to book for 1.5 hours) and we got about 8 drinks total out of the old-fashioned drink package we selected (so $12/drink). I wished they would've provided more garnishes on the side, because if you poured a second glass, it lacked that finishing element. However, we all had a lot of fun! The globe was heated, and there was a bluetooth speaker we played music on. The food itself was tasty and the service was fine. It's a good dining option at Hilldale and I know I'll be back. Really all this place has going for it is the vibe / atmosphere in a great space. Basically every visit I try a different dish because the last time left me underwhelmed in taste and overwhelmed in price. The Club, Spicy Chicken, Flatbread, Meatballs, Whatever-it's-called salad with the chicken on top...all so boring. Yet the prices are among the highest in the area for this type of fare. And I can't ever remember having a server that stood out as good. Never lousy, but just inattentive. Last night even after all 3 of finished our drinks and empty glasses sitting there the server failed to offer more drinks. He didn't even notice in the post-food-drop fly-by; we had to point it out. Café Hollander is a great option for dinner/lunch if you find yourself shopping at the Hilldale Shopping Center. We've stopped here a few times and have been pleased with our visits! We've always had fast service each time and didn't have to wait to be seated. I appreciate the variety of healthy options that are offered here. I've tried their Pesto Garden Manicotti, Falafel Bowl, and their Crispy Chicken Bowl. We've also tried their Sconnie Burger which is absolutely delicious. The burger comes topped with a few of their cheese curds through a toothpick which just adds the perfect touch. We love their cheese curds and soft pretzel bite starters! I love how light and fluffy the curds are. The bier cheese aoli that comes with the pretzels is also divine. The inside of this location is super cute. The decor creates a fun ambiance with bikes hanging from the ceiling and plants flourishing everywhere. In the winter, they continue to offer their outdoor dining experience with their heated igloo tables! Although, I haven't experienced eating in the igloos yet, it is something that intrigues me and I would definitely be excited to try it out in the future. read more

Okay I came back after my first review, holy moly the food was awesome! I am not a big salmon person but the salmon was delicious. I love absolutely love mashed potatoes, I can't stop raving about everything. The service was great, Angel was a delight, I have an ulcer which means I cannot eat certain foods right now until the surgery. I explained to her what was going on, she jumped right in, recommended what to eat & drink. I could not ask for a better waitress, the manager Michelle was great. My mom is traveling from Seattle, I got her a piece of pecan pie to surprise her for a late snack tonight. My previous review was more towards the bartender not the food. Living on Madison's west side, we have eaten at the Hollander many times with decent experiences; food, service, etc. Yesterday, my husband and I went for lunch in the early afternoon. The restaurant was busy and a young woman at the desk instructed us to wait for 5-10 minutes by the bar. We did so. A man, now at the desk, ignored us and gave an open table to women walking into the restaurant. My husband and I approached the desk indicating that we were waiting for 10 minutes. He told us that he couldn't help us because we were not on his list. Obviously, with total confusion at the desk he could not seat us. Was shopping at Hilldale and stumbled upon this wonderful restaurant. We arrived around 5pm which was perfect timing before the dinner rush. Without any reservations we were seated right away outside on a beautiful day which was surprising! Started off with the whipped feta dip which was incredibly fresh and tasty. The Za'Tar and feta complimented each other nicely. The vegetables, toasted pita, and falafel really made this dish stand out. This left the three of us very satisfied! Ordered the BLT-A, Sconnie, and Benelux salad. The BLT-A was amazing! The multigrain toast along with fresh avocado and crispy bacon made the perfect sandwich. The Sconnie burger was also amazing. The cheese curds stacked on top with the bier cheese aioli was PERFECTION! Didn't have any of the salad but it looked appetizing also. Wonderful experience for every meal. I've always been a huge fan of Cafe Hollander and this visit was no exception. The burger was full of flavor and hit every taste bud with full force. I added a side of jalapeño barbecue sauce which gave added some sweetness and some spice. The fries are crisp and salty; a perfect side to the burger. I paired the meal with the Hollander IPA, which was the first time I've tried their beer. I'd give it a 7/10. All in all, a great choice for a meal. Being exceedingly busy the only negative would be the time between sitting at the bar and finally receiving our menus. To be fair, we were quickly acknowledged by the barman and asked about drinks. Though they arrived in an acceptable time, the menus were neglected (forgotten?) for easily 10 min. Giving my wife and I a time to take in the interesting decor and colorful people. The menu when it eventually was in hand had some very interesting choices. Spice Rubbed Atlantic Salmon atop Brussels with a sweet pepper preparation. Crisp potato's buerre blanc. Outstanding. Salmon was not cooked to quite medium, and close enough to rare that my typical critical tongue wasn't prompted to find fault. Sprouts are another place where fine v fail share a narrow margin to decide if excuses could be offered. No such need. I used to LOVE Craftsman in Middleton for a dish they dropped, this prompted being dropped from my short list as well. Kristin loves Mussels. A year or so back we'd spent a week along Oregons coast where I had abundant access to unlimited mussels to try my hand at. Some were delish so not so, but their fresh availability was uncontested. So with that in mind I personally veered from that shellfish option. But like the vastly traveled salmon on my plate, these mussels were quite fine. The white wine leek and cream they were piled in was something I admittedly just had to reference from an online menu. It was something I'll recreate one day. Almost forgot the starter which the bartender suggested was the goat cheese bruschetta. Loved it. Because the cocktails were few the accuracy remains untainted and the prices were on par. I will return, and after revisiting the menu as I wrote this, I'm hoping it's going to be very soon. read more
