We had the cheese/meats plate and a vegetables gratin at around 15 francs each. The plate was not exceptional but everything felt fresh and there was reasonable variety. The gratin was very good and filling and combined a nice array of vegetables including swede and kohlrabi. The yoghurt with fruit we ordered for the toddler was agreeable and included plenty fresh fruit. The drinks, cappuccino and vin chaud were decent portions too. The basket of bread was excellent with several different kinds and each one interesting. The menu is interesting and to the vegetarian in our family it was felt to be excellent in choices by comparison with many menus in Geneva and Switzerland. The price was very reasonable and we left feeling satiated and delighted to have stumbled upon one of the jewels of Carouge.

There are mostly two person tables that could be put together to accommodate larger groups. You walk through the kitchen back to the seating area. The seating area is very homey, and cosy. I felt as if I was in my friend's house having a bite to eat. The lunch menu is heavily oriented towards large salads, and a few other options. My friend chose the Lasagna, and I selected the suggestion of the day - the Omelet, both of which came with a small mixed salad. The portions are quite large, and couldn't complete it all. I had a bite of my friend's lasagna and everything was made fresh and tasted good. My favourite though of the meal was the salad. I will definitely check out one of their salads next time. We each also tried one of their desserts, my friend the chocolate molleux and I the apple cobbler, both of which were amazing. I had been avoiding BdB because it seemed a bit too organized and a bit too clean to have a real neighborhood feel. They had many tempting pastries and chocolates that were tastefully presented in a large display, but (1) it was 7:30 am and too early for a piece of tart or a slice of cake, and (2) I had decided to sample the croissant at each bakery for a fair comparison. Although admittedly I did cheat a little bit and get a croissant des amades (CHF2.20--quite reasonable!). I was expecting a more manufactured taste than the small hole-in-the-wall bakery that I visited last week, considering the larger scale of BdB. Surprisingly, the croissant had a nice, slightly imperfect density and light sticky glaze that made it evident that they were home-made, and the almond paste inside was also a good texture of graininess. In fact, it tasted much fresher than the croissant I had purchased at the smaller bakery. As there are plenty of other bakeries in the area that I have yet to visit as I continue on my quest, I cannot say at this point that I've found my neighborhood baker. But if I'm looking for a little treat, I would not hesitate to go back to BdB to try their many other tasty-looking offerings.
