I've been to Cafe Paris for both breakfast and lunch on separate occasions. Both times I was able to make a reservation on OpenTable. The restaurant is beautiful. The interior is worth a visit alone. It's historical and high-ceilinged and has period-appropriate fixtures. At breakfast/brunch, it seems like the thing to get is the pastry tower. I didn't get that but found the food passable. But you're really there for the ambiance. The second time I came for lunch, I came in with a French friend and she was enchanted with the authentic French offerings on the menu. Wonderful breakfast selection and delicious food! On our first day in Hamburg, we wanted a hearty and delicious breakfast to start the day before a long day of sightseeing. We picked Cafe Paris, and we couldn't be happier with our choices. This French cafe has a long history and is hugely popular. We came in at 9 a.m., and the place was packed by 10 am. The interior decor is absolutely beautiful, with wonderful woodwork throughout. The breakfast selection is simple yet diverse, with breakfast themes ranging from French, English, Italian, and American. The stabdard menu comes in German, but an English version is available upon request. There are multiple sides, such as eggs, salad, yogurt, that you can add to complete your breakfast as well. For my breakfast, I chose the Madam Croque in the vegetarian option. It came with two slides of soft bread, with melted cheese, egg, and tomatoes in the middle. The portion was good-sized, and the sandwich was very delicious. I also added a small side of fruit salad. Others in our table had the French breakfast, which came with multiple bakery selection, yogurt, and jam. The American version came with the standard eggs, bacon, pancakes, and orange juice. Our bill for 5 came to around $125 Euros with small tips, which was very reasonable for the quality of the meal. I found this restaurant through yelp. They had French Merguez sausages made from lamb. Went there twice as the Merguez were delicious. Spicy hot and with the right other spices (garlic, cumin and fennel). French fries were very tasty and hot when they came out. The French bread was the real thing. A friend recommended I visit the Paris Cafe while in Hamburg. It was very busy at 10am on a Friday morning -- had to wait in line 20 minutes. Standing there, no writing names down on a list and calling them, or handing out beepers to buzz when your table's ready. So that is stressful, you're just standing there not even having been acknowledged or processed yet, hoping you're doing the right things but not knowing. For breakfast I had a croissant with jam & butter, a Croque Madame, and bowl of Cafe au Lait. The cafe au lait looked like France, but the jumbo bowls there are definitely larger than this one; I'd say it was a bowl but not jumbo. The croissant was OK but not great. Maybe not mass-processed, but not buttery flaky handmade goodness, with a crisp outside and tender inside, either. The jam, instead of coming in a little dish (which feels so European), was pre-bottled into a labelled jar, like at hotel buffets. The Croque Madame was a disappointment. It was done with plain white square bread, TOASTED, not grilled. The bechamel sauce was pasty like it came out of a jar, and had no taste, like out of a condiment squeeze-jar. I could not taste any nutmeg. The worst, well second-worse after the toasted bread, was that the cheese on top seemed to be microwaved. My impression of Paris Cafe is that it became very popular and then started cutting corners to save time or save money. Too many corners. Imaginons-nous: ~Let's order the jam from a bottling factory instead of offering different flavors and serving it in bowls with a pretty spoon. Let's use canned bechamel instead of making our own. Let's order pastry and breads in from a bakery instead of making them here... eventually... let's order them from a factory, that'll be cheaper. Let's assemble all the Croque- sandwiches in the morning and then microwave the cheese before they go out to the tables. "But what about grilling?" "Just toast the bread in the morning before assembly, that'll be good enough." ~ I'm not saying don't go there if you want to -- it's located very near to the Rathaus, it's certainly impressive with the paintings on the ceiling, and apparently it's a landmark in Hamburg. I had lunch here alone while visiting Hamburg for lunch, based on Trip Advisor reviews. (Which are generally less critical than Yelpers) The decor is beautiful and really charming; more like something you'd find in Brussels or Paris. The staff is young and while friendly, not always speedy in tending to you, but, I noticed that is common practice in most of Germany when dining out. They have an English menu, though somethings don't translate well so I wasn't sure what I was getting when I ordered it. It ended up being some type of fish with one large prawn on it, some weird nuts (not pine), a sauce, and a side of mashed potatoes. The prawn was tough, the fish was soggy and damp tasting (!) and the potatoes were the highlight of the meal, which doesn't say much as they were rather bland. I had a nice glass of rose with my meal, which was good. The service was so slow, I had little to no patience to wait for another drink. So I just wrapped up my meal and left. Rather disappointing. If I went back I'd get something else, of course, and something more simple. Note they only accept AMEX and Mastercard, no Visa. read more

You think Parisian waiters are rude? Please, Cafe Paris' is worse. My friend and I waited for 30 minutes to order. I did my part: I grabbed FOUR DIFFERENT WAITERS and begged them please, can we order? And trust me, as expats working in Hamburg we can speak some German - this was not an issue of language barriers. With no smiles, they always said, "Ask that waiter working in your area" and ran off. They didn't care one bit. We did manage to grab "that waiter" once. He promised to come take our order but never came. Finally, I told the hostess about our plight. She at first also told us to "ask that waiter working in your area" but I firmly told her we had been waiting 30 minutes. She was surprised and said he would get him - but didn't apologise. That waiter came after another 10 minutes and never apologised either. Cakes and drinks came to our table, too bad it wasn't what we ordered. When I told a waitress, with a frown on her face she walked away without apologising for the mixup. The two tables to either side of us had already paid and been refilled with new patrons while we still waited for our cakes. This same waiter constantly came to either tables on both our sides to make sure everything was okay, but not once after taking our orders to ours, until we called him again to pay. Why such a stark difference in service, Cafe Paris? Did we call you a mean name in a past life? My friend kindly suggested we still tip and immediately regretted when the waiter touched her uncomfortably on the back as he took the money. Café Paris, vous êtes ridicule. Wie wunderbar, dass mein Lieblingscafé auch Sonntags wieder geöffnet hat. Dass man - auch als Stammkunde - manchmal etwas ruppig behandelt wird, finde ich sehr 'französisch'. In Paris werde ich - vielleicht weil ich nicht französisch spreche - auch immer herablassend behandelt. Dennoch ist das Frühstück im Café de PARIS großartig. Die Brötchen sind knusprig und das Ei - man mag es nicht glauben - war PERFEKT. In ganz Hamburg gab es nur im BACKHUS im Billstedt-Center ein weich gekochtes Frühstücksei. Ich kann gar nicht sagen, wie viele Ausreden ich mir schon anhören musste, wieso es nicht möglich ist, ein weich gekochtes Ei zu bekommen. On the other, the service is pretty poor, and they've evidently never actually tried cassulet in France, because their version tastes nothing like. I think this place is a bit over-rated. My boyfriend and I were spending Easter weekend in Hamburg, and Cafe Paris was open and had a reservation spot available for Easter Sunday. We booked our reservation Saturday morning through their website, when we arrived Sunday morning at 9:30am, they did not have our reservation on their list. The hostess said they must not have seen it, so we had to be out of there by 11. This was a little frustrating because they opened at 9:30, so everyone was sitting down and ordering at the same time. Therefore it took maybe 10+ minutes before we could even order. We weren't exactly rushed to eat our breakfast (we didn't order huge meals), but it would have been nice if we could have relaxed a little bit more. Now on to the food. It's OK. I got the "Small" and my boyfriend got the English breakfast. To me, the best part was the croissant and the jam that came with my meal. It was super buttery and the jam tasted very fresh and maybe even homemade. But the cheese and cold cuts were just okay. It came with a slice of brie and some swiss cheese, which was slightly stiff and not the tastiest. The Small also comes with a few pieces of fresh fruit and a boiled egg. I was expecting a tasty, light French breakfast, but I felt like I could have recreated this exact meal from any hotel breakfast buffet. Both meals came with a hot drink. The coffee was good, but I've definitely had better. If you want to enjoy the atmosphere and the beautiful indoor ceilings, then yes, by all means, try this place. Again, the food is not bad by any means, and maybe there are some better options out there, but if you are looking for a more authentic French breakfast, I am sure there are better options out there. read more

This three stars is solely for the coffee and macaron I had. The drip coffee was not so great. The highlight of it was the piece of chocolate on the side. I also tried the caramel macaron. It was alright, i wish I had tried a different flavor. The filling was too soft compared to the macarons I tried in Paris. They cage was super busy and the service therefore wasn't so great either. The ambience. That is why this restaurant is always full. The coffee is ok, the lunch menu is a hit or miss. Don't expect friendly service, but do expect a beautiful room filled with chatter. The last time I was here I met a girlfriend for lunch. I had their ravioli, and it was good. The prices are a bit high for lunch, but based on the central location they are understandable. I am slowly collecting a list of European breakfast spots and sometimes feel a bit like Guy Fieri in the television show, Diner's Drive In's and Dives! I've eaten breakfast in over 20 cities in the past two years, so the "experience" is mounting. When you find a keeper, I call it the equivalent of finding a good American diner in Europe. They have good, reliable food, good energy, often a unique decor, and a menu that includes a few local specialties (most important). I spent three days in Hamburg and prior to my trip, read through several blog posts, newspapers and online review sites to figure out where I should have the most important meal of the day. My first and third stop was none other than Cafe Paris. Cafe Paris is located in the center of Hamburg and is housed in a space that dates back to 1882. The original slaughterhouse was later converted to a turn-of-the-century French cafe and today is beautifully adorned with iconic French cafe decor features such as its dark wooden tables, Art Deco posters, banquette seating, a long bar with wooden stools, floor to ceiling subway tiles and a jaw dropping Art Nouveau ceiling. The menu features standard French fare such as hard boiled eggs, croissants, baguettes, jam, cheese, juice, Croque Madame, and Croque Monsieur. It also includes a few breakfast twists including a "Moroccan" version of French toast topped with roasted tomatoes, goat cheese and orange marmalade, an "American" breakfast that comes with a pancake, a fried egg, peanut butter, and syrup and the local "Hamburg" which consists of a piece of toast, crab salad, herring, smoked salmon, scrambled eggs with chives and a glass of Hamburg's local Holsten pilsner (a brewing company founded in 1879 in the city's Altona-Nord quarter). On my first visit, I tried the Moroccan and on the second visit, I opted for something a bit lighter (just some muesli and a hard boiled egg with green tea). I must note, I returned twice to Cafe Paris (out of three breakfasts) for another bite of their croissants. I ordered the breakfast for two for 31€ with my boyfriend. First of all, the so called champagne was cheap and not worth drinking. I only took a sip, but it was more than enough. The food wasn't that good either. It looked better than it tasted. It included about three slices of different cheeses, some ham, jam, Nutella, one egg for each and some smoked salmon. The salmon looked fatty and none of us even bothered with trying it. Everything else tasted okay, but I'm sure we could have eaten the same thing anywhere else. The orange juice was ok, and the coffee wasn't worse than the typical German coffee. Tip: look at the menu before you order any drinks, because many menus included drinks, something you should be aware of before they come and take your drink order. read more

What a beautiful place with such ambience, that you might fall backside first, when looking up at the celing. I visited 3 times in one weekend, just because it was so amazing. The food was soo good and the staff very friendly and polite. Both the breakfast and the dinner menu is perfectly varied and still true to the concept. At dinnertime, it is worth mentioning the wonderful experience to be had. Order a Tatar Cafe Paris, and the waiter will prepare it at the table. In a plate, he brings a ball of raw meat, and small bowls of traditional tatat accessories. Not very deliscious to begin with. Then he takes out a deep plate and mix an egg yolk and mustard and start adding olive oil while whisking very fast with two forks, and VOILA!!!! you have a home stired mayonaise. In this he adds some ketchup and the ball of meat. Massaging the mayonaise into the meat, then adding the onion, kapers and chopped parsley, it results in a master piece. And it tastes heavenly. Well worth a trip to Hamburg, just for that. I am definately comming back. read more

Cafe Paris is not a mere cafe in Hamburg, but a landmark. Everyone local who has lived in Hamburg, or even visitors who have asked around about where to eat, have without a doubt stumbled into this dining institution. The atmosphere for sure has Parisian charm to it and one might even arguably say that sometimes the service has a bit of a French "attitude" as well ;) Ok, that is not fair to compare a cheeky service experience to the negative stereotype of a snooty Parisian, but sometimes it depends on who you get at your table that day. Often I frequent here on Sunday for Brunch because it can be hard to find places that are open on Sunday in Hamburg, especially serving somewhat of a proper brunch/breakfast menu. They still do not quite have the typical American breakfast (country thick bacon, sausage, hash browns, etc...) nor is it even resembling a English Breakfast (bangers/sausage, eggs, beans, etc...) Though Hamburg is not expected to carry too much of any celebration towards Americans since the North is far more British influenced and the South of Germany (Bavaria) is more American favorable due to the history, war, who helped who rebuild, etc... So yeah, you can get breakfast but more a European style with breads, fruits, cheeses, some cold cut meats, thick pancakes with peanut butter, not syrup, and fried or boiled eggs. If you are thinking iHop or Dennys Grand Slam, well, you will find none of those shenanigans here. Be lucky they have croissants, but hey, could you really call it Cafe "Paris" without this national pastry???? I go for the cappuccino, Italian breakfast with cold cut meats/cheeses, a freshly squeezed orange juice and sit outside if the weather is nice. They serve quite a nice dinner menu as well and it changes with specials of the evening. I had a steak with peppercorn gravy and potatoes one night which was amazing! For lunch, the SteakTartare is not only popular here, but it is said they make some of the best around, served with fresh bread. The only part of this tartare that bugs me is that it is the ground beef style and I prefer when they dice the steak, otherwise it just looks like raw hamburger meat to me, ugh... Cafe Paris is just next to the Rathaus (TownHall) and I believe someone told me once they own the bar across the way called Bar Leon, which is supposed to have the best cocktails, but the door is very inconspicuous, so you must be watchful for it and ring the doorbell to enter. A wonderfull place. I don't know how, but they managed to create this atmosphere as if you are sitting in the Parisian Bistro, somewhere in 7e arrondissement. May be it's a classic furniture or formall table settings (white tablecloth, of course). The whole Art Deco details (the entrance door, the tiles, painted domes) adds it up. Well, we can call it quite romantic too. But I'd be also fine sitting alone. I had liver (not a traditional bistro choice) and it was great! Very peaceful, very nice and unfortunately very crowded during the evening hours. But one can fully understand that as it is located on such a great place. It is in a small street to the left side of the Rathhausmarkt next to the Citi Bank :) The place itself is relatively big but also very peaceful. Very classy with a real French feeling. This is nice a place to go away from the city noise and enjoy a nice cup of coffee. They offer a variety of products but the sweets they have are simply amazing. Not only the name gives a french athmosphere- also if you sit outside, when the night is falling.The view to the impressive townhall, the little something like a place with parking cars in front of the cafe, all these little round tables in a line, the cheap water, the quick waiters in black and white, the good red wine and the taste of french moutarde in the salad sauce give a persuading impression of a cafe in Paris. People like to eat tartare frites which is mixed on the table while one is watching with moutarde, raw egg, fresh black pepper and some sauces. Very special place with tourists, buisiness people and others. An enviroment which is a bit open, flirt seems possible, but you'd still feel fine sitting there alone. We had a very nice meal here. Everything was above expectations in a low key sort of way. My salmon was simple and prepared very well, and little things like the French bread and butter were better than expected. Called before going to the cafe, asking if there would be a table for three. The lady told me to just stop by and if there wouldn't be anything available to get a coffee at the bar first. Even after asking how big the chances are to get a table if we arrive within 10 minutes. Same answer. When we arrived, we had to see that the place was totally crowded. Not even space a the bar. The people having breakfast were surrounded by people in line. Absolutely bad customer service and the people having breakfast didn't look too satisfied about the crowd. read more

Not ever going back. Wedding group at Bel Etage, we waited 1:15h for some cold étagères and our drinks to arrive (the coffee was handwarm and some drinks were even wrong ones) . Until then they only had bread and butter on the table. Due to the long wait for the food, we only had 45min of our 2h time frame to eat, couldnt order a second round of drinks etc. The ham was of cheapest discount quality, ham and the cheese was half dry cheap slices, almost impossible to separate due to having been lying around for hours, the tomato and cucumber slice was completely lifeless and dry - this breakfast was not fresh at all, it had obviously been prepared hours ago - but still needed an hour to arrive. The bread was of the cheapest wheat stuff, not even baguette or sourdough, even Bäckerei Junge or Gaues make better bread. And in the end, since we only had such a short time to eat, they even dared to complain that we didnt reach the minimum consumption and "offered" a round of Cremant - but not for free, only to meet the consumption threshhold (although people were already packing to leave). After intense discussion, they agreed to have us only pay the consumed amount of food and threw a round of macarons. This was easily the worst culinary experience I had in years. I dont know what still keeps the name if this institution alive but it will have definitely seen the last of us. Quality, value, service, an absolute disaster. And please note: this was no corona issue. They were understaffed for the amount of people (which they knew 4 weeks in advance) and the way they handled the situation until the very last minute was plain disappointing and unnecessary. read more

The service stinks and doesn't much care about this. That they can't figure this out makes me absolutely hesitant to give asterisks for anything else. I don't know. We were there first about two years ago and things were better service, atmosphere, the creme brulle (sp? sorry). Things were just outrageously expensive, which we expected, but I think for that price, we should have gotten better. I ordered a costly tea. I expected a nice quality tea but received a basic tea from a common brand served just about everywhere. The real kicker was whene my son ate only a couple of bitea of his chocate mousse and we asked if we could take the rest to go. The waitress send no because it would break the kuhlkette and would go bad resulting in our holding the restaurant responsible for becoming ill. I can't really recommend it. read more

I went for dinner after reading all the positive reviews here, and I was happy for a few reasons: -It has a great bistro feel. -People were well dressed and stylish. -Good crowd with lively conversations everywhere. -Great location just off the U train. -They have a bar....seriously, the Yelp photos of the bar sold me. I quickly grabbed a seat and a pint at the bar. The bar tenders were super busy busting out drinks for the whole restaurant. It was fun to watch their activity. I ordered a turbot fillet with sauteed vegetables and a nice truffle risotto. The risotto was very rich. This was a wonderful meal. I think I will try breakfast soon. read more
