Love this cafe! Beautiful cozy atmosphere, and the best flat white I've had in Germany. Friendly service, delicious cakes, and great location. Try to get the window seating if possible. :) read more

The location is quiet enough, and the atmosphere is a very familiar one. The couches offer you a very cosy feeling. (tip: the places on the balcony are awesome) The biggest plus of the place are the cakes. They are just great. Unfortunately I can't say the same thing about the coffee. That's one of the reasons why is only a 4 star, and not 5. Usually with a tasty cake goes a good coffee... Anyways, it has to be said that the service system they use is also a bit strange, but I won't ruin the surprise, I will let you to find out how it works. So, long story short, sometimes is usefull to leave your comfort zone, and try some new not so central places. Since my first visit here, I also returned couple of times, and I always bought a friend with me. Take your favourite book, or music, take a sit, have a cake, and enjoy the quiet rain on the huge windows ;)

Espresso is very good, as are the panini and other Italian nibbles on offer - at a very fair price. That also helps erase memories of occasionally very slow and forgetful service... When in Cologne I usually try and cram in breakfast at Al Barretto at some point. I urge you to do the same. And bring some time.

I went there once for a coffee to stay, and another time for a coffee and a croissant to go. The croissant was a bit meh (maybe the solution is just not to buy croissants in Germany). The coffee was not bad but not exceptional either. And the service was a bit sketchy and amateurish. I have ordered a coffee in my terrible German, and the person at the counter did not understand me (this was actually the first time, there is nothing arcane in "a Kaffee bitte"), I had to repeat several times while she was giggling (gosh, people, try to learn a new language and we will talk again). Then they asked if I wanted milk with the coffee, I said a clear 'no', and they brought it anyways. Maybe this is some kind of supposedly 'friendly' (as opposed to professional) service, but I think I prefer the professional service that one gets in Parisian cafés (and okay, I was a bit offended by the laughing at my attempts at speaking German). Maybe I will give the place another chance, because the Kuchen look rather tempting.
