Stopped by Café Tal and it ended up being one of my favorite coffee stops in Guanajuato. The shop has a quaint, peaceful vibe--the kind of place you could sit and relax with a book or catch up with friends without feeling rushed. I ordered a flat white, which was solid--smooth, nicely balanced, no complaints. But then I tasted my friends' drinks... and wow, I definitely missed out. They had variations of coffee and chocolate drinks, and every single one I tried was really, really good. Rich, velvety, and chocolatey without being overly sweet. That touch of chocolate added so much depth without overpowering the coffee. The guy at the counter was incredibly kind and patient with our group and gave genuinely great recommendations. You could tell he knew the menu well and really wanted people to enjoy what they ordered. All around, this place just hits the mark--cozy atmosphere, great drinks, and top-notch service. I'll definitely be back next time, and I'm going straight for the chocolate. read more

Delicious coffee and drinks. My group tried a chocolate frappe, the super-concentrated tiny cup of hot chocolate, and a choco-mocha latte type drink, coffee, and all were delicious. On later days I tried more chocolate-variety drinks. I also bought a bag of beans for around 50 pesos. I haven't brewed them yet, but that's a great price. The only reason this isn't 5 stars is because the decor is a bit lacking and the waitress couldn't be bothered to look away from her phone for a moment (even while taking our orders! We thought she was typing our orders into the phone to remember them, but then she asked us to repeat everything so we realized she was probably just texting or something! hah!) Many people have said this is the best coffee in Guanajuato. I can't quite agree with that (see my other review for coffee in this lovely town), but still, they do make pretty good espresso drinks. The real draw to Cafe Tal is their quiet location, ample seating, free wifi, and charging ports at almost every table. Cool, small, third wave coffee shop. They had two drip options to choose from, a French roast and a medium roast. I went with the medium roast which was well balanced and very slightly fruity. I also got a cortado, which was a bit more bitter than I had hoped. This seemed to be a popular place with lots of people hanging out inside and out. I was bummed, however, that they didn't offer pour overs, cold brew, or light roast single origin coffee with fruity or citrus notes. read more

What can I say? Came here everyday of my trip, and this is my new favorite coffee shop in Mexico. The staff is exceptional, coffee is on point and they have some food in case you get hungry. Very reasonable prices for their coffee and they have beans to take home, I even bought one of their t shirts (130 pesos) because I love them so much! Excellent experience and ambiance, they offer winfows seats for people watching ans a small second floor. I could sit here for hours. I just cannot recommend this place enough. The storefront is quite small with only a handful of tables, but across the street they have a large seating area (my husband and I had ordered to-go and realized while waiting that extra space, so we got a table there). Best coffee shop in Guanajuato and the best mocha frappe in possibly the entire world! They use high-quality chocolate in it, which is pretty hard to find in this part of Mexico so it's definitely a treat! They also have high-quality beans from the coffee regions of Mexico (mostly Veracruz) and roast them in an in-house machine every single day so you get fresh coffee ALWAYS! The coffee is strong - Italian-style so don't order an extra shot unless you can really handle it! Prices are great too - much lower than in some of the mediocre touristy cafes. There is lots of space (two buildings) and there are always people studying and working in the coffee house so the vibe is awesome any time of day. The staff are great too! It's the best place to get some work done, read, or meet with friends. There are unlimited coffee refills and free wifi! read more

Cafe Tál gets a LOT of clientele, because he has really good coffee. I am talking about the one on Sangre de Cristo, just up from the huge jacaranda tree. I've been here for five years and I think I've had one cup of coffee anywhere else in town. It straddles the bottom of my callejon, and is everybody's favorite. It's unpretentious - a real coffee house - with Wifi access at all the wall tables, so students and writers come often and stay long. The owner goes to Michoacán state or Vera Cruz state and picks out the beans himself. You don't often get that in the USA! What can I say? It's pretty damned good. read more

Great wifi (for the area), friendly service, good prices, lists of power plugs. My only gripe is though their coffee is as good or better than anything I've had in Guanajuato, they too use only dark roast. If you get an espresso, be prepared for burnt, bitter sadness. Their mochachino however is pretty decent, and my daily pick. read more

Best spot to grab a coffee or cappuccino in Guanajuato! Friendly servers and lots of seating (in fact two different entrances/areas to sit in). Rustic brown wood seating gives it a vibe of a spot you would spend hours in. I will return on my next trip to Guanajuato. read more

The servers were super friendly and patient with my elementary Spanish. The Beso Negro (super concentrated 3 oz of hot chocolate) is fantastic as I'm sure other reviewers have opined. Best coffee **anywhere** in my opinion. Better than all of the specialty places in Seattle IMO, including Victrola, Stumptown, Herkimer, Zoka, Rococco, Urban Coffee, shall I go on? Great wifi, plenty of seating in their room across the alley, English spoken, lowfat milk available. Take some beans or ground coffee home for a real treat once you leave this wonderful place. This is a serious coffee house that believes in strong coffee. Both espresso drinks and drip coffee are excellent, and are supported by strong food offerings. To top it off, you must try the Beso Negro, 3 ounces of decadent dark chocolate served in an espresso cup. This is the one place I keep returning to almost every hour of the day! read more
