I stopped by for a quick late lunch around 1:45pm. I don't know this was here until I was browsing DoorDash and stumbled upon it. I was intrigued because they had Dutch crunch bread and as everyone knows, we all love that Dutch crunch! Unfortunately Marin doesn't have many places with Dutch crunch roll sandwiches, seems like sourdough is more popular on this side of the bridge. Finding the storefront wasn't too hard. It's located up a hill next to an urgent care. Parking was fairly easy in the structure. I ordered the Hot Chicken Club sandwich ($11.45) on Dutch crunch bread. To start, the bread was okay. Wasn't exactly crunchy but nothing like a quick oven bake at home can't fix. The sandwich lists- breaded chicken, bacon, pepper jack cheese, lettuce (romaine), tomato and chipotle aioli. I was sort of expecting the sandwich to have a bigger spice kick because of the "hot" in the name of the sandwich. It wasn't spicy at all unfortunately. I did appreciate that it was not over saucy and it was easy to handle the sandwich when eating. I was half expecting the breaded chicken to be crispy but it wasn't sadly. There was only 1 piece of bacon on the sandwich. The ratio of meat (chicken and bacon) to veggie (tomato and romaine) was fairly even. For the price and size, it was okay. It is a tad smaller than the sandwiches I've seen at other places like Michael's sourdough. The storefront was fairly large with lots of into and outdoor seating. The two people working seemed nice. Hopefully they have more influx of customers due to having urgent care nearby. Due to the location, I feel like not many people know about this place since it's not the easiest to get to if you don't have a car. Overall, I may come back and try another sandwich in the future if I'm nearby but wouldn't go out of my way for it. read more

I couldn't understand the reviews for this cafe. Where, what? Now I do. One of those cafes in an office building, it's a bright, relaxed, lovely atmosphere especially this morning. The regulars have a friendly relationship with the owner. I knew it was good when I heard him cracking and whisking a real egg for my egg and cheese croissant. Probably a bit down in business post pandemic and empty office suites. But I look forward to coming back when I can. A typical menu for this kind of place with sandwiches, salads, quesadillas, breakfast burritos/bagels/croissants, with a Mediterranean item or two. Good solid food. Beer, espresso, smiles. read more

This is a combined review of 3 lunches at Café 4040 in the 4040 Civic Center Building in San Rafael. Cafe 4040 is a corporate cafe in every single sense of the word. I do not mean this in a particularly good way. Added Note: They remember their regulars. As I stated in the original review, they are very friendly. Recently, I received the wrong sandwich in my bag. The next day, i went back. He remembered they had given me the wrong sandwich and game me my sandwich for free. The staff is very friendly. I give them that. It is only due to this that they get rounded up to 3 stars. I had three different chicken sandwiches. They were all middle of the road. They were freshly prepared with pretty standard ingredients. They were all bland. The meat doesn't particularly taste like chicken. it doesn't particularly taste like anything. Sound appealing?! Well, with its high ceilings and one south-facing wall of glass, it does exude a nice airiness. If it's sunny but cold out, this would be a good place to sit inside by the window and bask in the sun like a cat. And while you do that, you can eat and drink secure in the knowledge that you won't run into anyone you know. The offerings are basic: sandwiches, salads, crepes, coffees. I had a small salad with a scoop of tuna ($6.25). It was adequate but not nearly enough food to qualify as a full lunch. A friend recommends their more substantial mediterranean plate, in the $8 range. It looked good and more filling. There's a little outdoor space between the cafe and the parking garage. My daughter introduced me to the Cafe and now it is my go too place! I drive down from Novato to get lunch there. The sandwiches are excellent, and when they are bbqing out front, the chicken and burgers are great. But more than the food being what it is, which is fantastic, the staff and owner are what makes this the place to pick up lunch. I picked my boyfriend up on my lunchbreak and took him with me while I did my banking, then to the store, and then with about 10 minutes to spare drove up here to Cafe 4040 so he could get some lunch while, you know, we were on lunchbreak. You know, I worked forever right across the parking lot but never ate there. My bad. BF got a sandwich and I was very jealous of it, because I'd left my food back in the fridge at work. It looked darn good. It was one of those sandwiches you can tell it was made with love. So we will be back soon. They had a special where you order 3 types of salads for like $8 or so.
