A bit sad to learn that this place was already closed because I had some good memories there with my friends. When I was there, I thought the food was pretty good, but I could see how the restaurant only got mediocre reviews. Overall the food leaned towards oily, but they definitely had seasoning and the taste. The gumbo was big and filled with good content, although I would personally loved to see more seafood mixed in instead of just at the top. The lobster roll didn't have enough butter but had an abundant amount of lobster which was always a plus. The ahi tuna itself tasted tender and flavorful, while the spinach and mashed potatoes relied on the juice for flavor, which was not ideal but fine. The chicken was well-cooked and flavorful, which explained why it was a signature dish. Finally, the fried shrimp on the po-boy had too much dough and not enough actual shrimp. That po-boy overall only tasted okay. I wanted to add my input here even if this location is closed because I dined here in 2021 and had been delaying reviewing this establishment ever since. As a seafood aficionado, I was really excited to try Café Blue. I'm always open to exploring restaurants that ride on the cusp between being exceptional (4-5 stars) and just average (3 stars). Unfortunately, my experience fell in the latter. The menu offers a wide variety that caters to every palate, but it feels like it's trying too hard... It takes a lot to get us to go downtown on a Saturday night due to traffic and parking concerns, but Cafe Blue was worth it. My husband said the Fat Ass Sea Bass was the best seafood he has had in Austin. I had the shrimp with crab stuffing land it was delicious. The other four guests had different dishes and salads and gave high ratings to each of them. Our server, Jemma , was attentive, friendly and effective, as were the rest of the staff. For some reason, there were few customers that night and I would give 5 stars for ambience. After being unable to secure reservations at several of our chosen restaurants we went here for its proximity and seafood selections on a Friday night around 6. The restaurant was eerily empty and quiet. We were seated at a large booth in the back after passing up on a high top in the bar area. Pleasantly surprised was the outcome! Started with shrimp cocktail that was cold and complimented by a nice cocktail sauce. Had the scallops for dinner with garlic mashed potatoes and green beans. To have some a prime location in downtown Austin, I was a bit disappointed with my experience when I dined for #Afrotech23. The best part of my experience was the mussels. 10 out of 10. Started with a doz oysters on half shell. Very fresh. Got a combination at Zac"s recommendation. I had the wedge salad and my partner had a cup of gumbo. Wedge salad was good with a twist of goldfish for crunch. The gumbo was very good, although my partner likes okra in his gumbo, which this did not have. Broke down the menu and was very clear and confident on every plate on the menu. Kudos to him for that, so here's the first star. The Food, I mean look at my pictures. They weren't great. The Brussels sprouts I had alongside my stuffed shrimp were fried to a crisp. No nutritional value was left from these poor guys and the shrimp were just under cooked. The pasta wasn't terrible but with nobody else in the building, you'd think it would at least be warm. Oh and had the oysters as well, very fresh but is that the restaurant or the supply chain. Feel bad writing this review but had a very underwhelming experience. Met some family friends here for lunch. Parking is impossible much like anywhere downtown. The interior is pretty with blues and oceanic decor fitting the seafood themed restaurant. Service was horrible. No side plates brought so we all shared and picked off the appetizer plates when we saw others with the small plates. Ordered coffee and came without cream and sugar and had to ask twice to get the cream (no sugar) brought. For our non coffee drinking friends, the restaurant was out of black tea which seemed odd. Don't think I've ever run into that. We ordered the French onion soup, wedge salad, and one of the Benedict's from the brunch menu. Wedge salad was okay, had goldfish around it which were super stale and but a bad taste in my mouth. French onion soup was okay as well, super mushy and kind of an off flavor. The clam chowder was good. My friend seemed happy with his [something] salad. I had a lobster roll which was a tad dry but overall pretty good. Waited about 6 mins at the hostess station while staff looked at us and talked among themselves across the empty restaurant. Literally not one occupied table at an hour and a half before closing. Had to walk over and ask the bartender if she could seat us. Booths were covered in crumbs and food. She said, " I'm going to close this door by you because we have a party of 45 back there and it's allll women" and rolled her eyes. We were surrounded by tables covered in dirty dishes and a floor that was pretty dirty. After waiting a reasonable amount of time for someone to come to our table we finally got up to leave. The manager was behind the bar chatting with bartender. As we walked past he asked if everything was ok, we said no, told him about the wait, the dirty booths and dirty tables all around. We had a hard time paying because we couldn't find our waitress. The food is good. I had the shrimp poboy. The shrimp was hand breaded and fresh. However, the bread (which was of high quality) was put on the griddle with what tasted like hamburger grease. I could not eat it. It was the wrong flavor profile for shrimp. We were in town for a bachelorette party and woke up Sunday morning needing some good food to start our day off. I looked up brunch near me and Cafe Blue popped up with their delicious sounding menu. 4 of us headed over and were seated immediately. I was actually shocked at how empty the place was at 11am on a Sunday. They sat us at a high top near the bar and we were greeted quickly by Nick the bartender/server. He was quick with taking our order, making cocktails, refilling drinks, bring clean plates, providing extra silverware, etc. He was on it. The food started with complimentary beignets. They were so fluffy and delicious, great way to start off the meal. We then order the crispy baby back ribs to share for the table. They were cooked perfectly and were absolutely amazing. Love the glaze on them. Then we each ordered our meals. I wasn't too hungry at that point so I got the appetizer coconut shrimp portion. They came out nice and crispy on the outside, tender shrimp on the inside and served with this delicious jalapeno apricot marmalade that complimented the coconut very well. Others loved their dishes such as gumbo and a few different benedicts. As we were leaving we were talking to Nick, our fantastic server. he mentioned how we made his day better because he lost a friend the night before and was having a hard time. Elena and I went to Cafe Blue (Downtown) since it was so incredibly close to the Austin Convention Center and nearby hotels (Hilton, Marriott, and others). We were welcomed into a bright, smartly upscale and sophisticated space that was sunny, open, and offered ample privacy in both dining rooms. We were so impressed at lunch with Steve the oyster-expert host and Milan, our wonderfully friendly waitress and the mouth-wateringly delicious food (oysters, wedge salad, clam chowder---all must-haves!!) and friendly, informative, and fast service that we came back for dinner! At dinner, Lucky served us with finesse, as well! Had the best Chilean Sea Bass ever (even beating what I've been spoiled on in New York City). Don't you dare ever forget to get the key lime pie with the schlag whipped to a firm texture and the custardy key lime melting at each bite with the crust finishing with a home-baked cookie taste that was a finishing master stroke. Decided to tryout out this restaurant. Had a painkiller $10 and the lobster rolls $22. Both were pretty tasty. I appreciated that you could see the lobster claw meat because it wasn't drowning in a sauce. Also had the creme brûlée for dessert. I'm a big creme brûlée fan and expect the crystallized sugar on top. This one also had powdered sugar. That's sugar on top of sugar! Going to an upscale restaurant in many ways is like driving an exquisite car. One could eat fast food and be fine, albeit there are health implications to consider, just as one can get around in a Chevy spark, or in my days growing up a Yugo and get from point A to B. Personally, and more often than not, I like a fancy encounter as there are extra's included with the increase in price. Style, extras, craftmanship and quality of ingredients or parts can set a part an experience from mundane to breath taking. I've read several reviews about Café Blue in Austin and by word of mouth I decided to give this restaurant a test drive. Parking this deep in downtown sucks so I had to walk a block and pay $15 for parking on a Saturday which is somewhat discouraging. But walking up to the establishment was a feast for the eyes as my anticipation started to throttle up. Outside the corner restaurant has several quaint tables, an inviting sign outside beckons the racer to get in pit row before hitting the starting line. Inside the blood starts to race seeing an elegant centerfield bar with several TVs, tons of oil can sized taps of beer, an oval mahogany ceiling fixture with recessed lighting hovering above a grey, light blue and white marbled bar top with matching barstools. There's a little art on the walls hung over planks of contrasting grey marble and an open kitchen bathed in stainless steel. I did find it odd that at 5pm me and my copilot, aka pit crew or date, were the only ones in the restaurant. I don't mind a race being the only participant but it does help build the ambiance. Sitting on pit row, I decided to oil up the machine with a makers mark and diet coke. I will say this cocktail was strong and lacked real balance as I had a long evening planned. My eyes scanned the menu as my date and I were craving seafood however we were wanting to share smaller bites ala tapas. We opted for all seafood to fuel the funny cars and I ordered a Mercer Family Vineyards Merlot to accompany me when the light hit green. I will note that we had window seats so while it diminished the intimacy it offered a unique perspective to people watch. We'll call them fans, who were diverse and entertaining to watch while they walked their dogs, flaunted their decadence, and were oblivious to the cars at the starting line inside but duly noting the non-metaphorical motorist outside. When our apps came out, the feet hit the gas. First lap was fast as we drove through the coconut shrimp. Five perfectly fried shrimp with the right amount of coating glazed our tongues with a nice dollop of jap-apricot marmalade which almost could be mistaken for a chutney which I think would have paired equally as well. I cleaned my palate with the Merlot and I was presently shocked how well the engine responded to the racing fuel. It was tart with red fruit, earthy tones, and somewhat bold with mellow tannins and long legs. It's always refreshing to get what you think is a cheap wine which turns out really good. The next lap we enjoyed the Lobster rolls. I'm somewhat of a stickler on lobster rolls, preferring mayo ala Maine style to butter as I enjoy the salad aspect otherwise, I would just get a lobster with butter. Anyways three rolls motored their way into our mouths but I already was let down. The reason is simple, I wanted to see chunks of claws and tails, which I would say comprised 40% of the roll. The rest looked like Kani or the "Krab salad" you get with sushi rolls. The flavor was pretty good but a smidge underflavored. That said my copilot loved them, although she's no Dale Earnhardt of lobster rolls as this was her first race. The final app or lap was upon us and I intentionally left the best for last to finish the race strong. The tuna was encrusted with multicolor sesame seeds and seared perfectly. The only issue I had was the seaweed salad with was good but also had normal greens (red leaf, spinach, radicchio to name a few). Just nitpicking as I was wanting to go "full Asian" (bonus if you catch the reference). The sauce was good, offering a nice compliment to the sesame oil, soy vinaigrette on the salad. Overall, I loved participating in the great app extravaganza and the food was above decent while the staff was extremely courteous and knew the menu. However, this was no Daytona 500, the grand daddy of races from what I'm told, and honestly I have more races to drive before I deciding to try the place again. I'm not saying it's bad but I'm still looking for the perfect track to peel out and lay rubber on. read more

Fantastic spot to grab dinner while in town for business! I came here twice while I was in town. First time was on a Sunday night - came with two friends and made a reservation for 7:00. Seating was quick. Service was a little slow (it took about 15 minutes to get our wine) but I think it was limited staff so completely understand. The food way so good that I came back again by myself on Tuesday evening and sat at the bar. No reservation needed. Service was excellent at the bar. Both nights I enjoyed oysters (Gulf oysters on Sunday and Massachusetts oysters on Tuesday) and the Oscar Filet. So we had dinner at Cafe Blue last night. Two people, 4 drinks (two Lemon Drop martinies, two double Garrison Bros on the rocks), two apps, two entrees, no desert, $176 before tip. Crab cakes - really delicious, but also really tiny. Oysters Rockefeller - huge and delicious, crunch panko on top, the best thing we had. Coconut shrimp entree (wife) - Good shrimp, but a literal mound of limp french fries occupying half the plate. Blackened Redfish (me) - Fish was good, but there was a only a small bit (1/4 cup maybe) of the sauce. There were maybe 4 crawfish tails. The service was fantastic, no complaints there. We could have gone to Crawfish ATX, Keepers, or probably any other good shrimp shack style place in town, and gotten an equivalent meal for $100 less. Just not worth the price at all. read more

Even though there were a lot of students their celebrating their prom night, they restaurant did a great job of separating those parties and providing the appropriate amount of attention while serving. Forgot two things, which was a plate as we were a party of three and there were only two plates, and we only received the oyster menu after asking about them, but other than that the service was great. The trout dish was well prepared. I enjoyed it, but my wife did think it was a bit too creamy, almost like mayonnaise, maybe a little extra lemon is needed. The oyster were great, and the server described them perfectly, nailed the ones that were super salty, so was impressed by that. Mixed drinks were great, no tap beer sadly, but offered a cold glass. Inconsistent seafood restaurant in downtown Austin delighted us with an excellent meal on one visit but disappointed us on the next. Even though both of our visits were on weekend nights, the dining room was eerily deserted both times. The service might be the problem - even though we were literally the only customers at 9 PM on a Friday night, we went long stretches without seeing our server. One would think that on a slow night the chef would have plenty of time to do an amazing job, but my companion's grilled salmon arrived cold and undercooked. To the restaurant's credit, they quickly replaced the dish and got it right on the second try. My hearty portion of crab mac and cheese, with generous amounts of lump crab meat and a creamy cheese sauce, hit the mark but was a bit pricey. The dishes that brought us back for a second visit are worth mentioning. The ahi tuna dinner salad, featuring ruby-red slices of tuna, pieces of mango and a delicious Asian dressing, was fresh-tasting and a good value. The flash-fried brussel sprouts delivered loads of carmelized flavor, although they were gone from the menu on our second visit (our server said they were seasonal). I really liked the bar area, although I didn't see anyone actually sitting there on either visit, and they've got a great selection of draft beer. Your server will deliver a tablet to your table with the beer and drinks list. I found the oyster prices almost offensive - best to time your visit during happy hour (half price) if you're an oyster lover. A nice outdoor patio was closed during both of our visits, but probably makes a great brunch scene. read more

My guests had the Crab Stuffed Jumbo Shrimp, Shrimp Brochette, crab stuffed gulf flounder & Cedar Planked Salmon which they devoured quickly. Our server was Le L & he was very attentive. My group of 7 girls were looking for a Sunday brunch place with no reservations. We went here after no where would take us. I woke up earlier that day and had already eaten so I left to get an iced coffee (this is not a breakfast place and they would've given me hot coffee with a side of ice). When I came back after the 6 girls had ordered, I saw the host speak to the manager. The tall, older white gentleman (assumed manager) came over and told me I can't have outside drinks in the restaurant. While I understand this is frowned upon, I assumed they would let it slide since we were the only large party in the restaurant (only 2 other small tables). He made me leave and I had to sit outside while the girls had the farewell brunch to our weekend trip without me (they had already ordered so we couldn't really leave). He said it was illegal, and I have since found no such law, and have been assured by other reviewers this is a lie. My friends said the food was terrible (not sure if they were just sticking up for me or not, but based on the look of the place and the giant menu I wouldn't be surprised). Now since reading other reviews, I see this place has a problem with their management. Not sure why they keep the rude old man around, he definitely could've spoken to me in a less condescendingly sexist way. Had a large party here in the private room (20+ people). Nothing stood out, positive or negative, about the food or service. Because it was a large party there was a 21% service charge. Fine by me for a large party. Given the 21%, I did not add extra tip. BUT someone on staff took it upon themselves to add another 10% when running the charge. I called the restaurant to alert them. They were gracious enough to offer a refund. But buyer beware...check your bill and make sure you close out all tip and total fields on the merchant copy! read more
