There's room for about 80 people. Great for groups or pairs. Vibes: Warners Bay is nice. Seems lowkey but not so really. Through picturesque Australian bush and coastal breezes, we arrived at Lakehouse Cafe for lunch. I'll be upfront: I wasn't expecting much. We noticed that most venues in the area have a weekend surcharge and Lakehouse is no different. It did cost us $2 more per person to eat here on a Saturday. Did it bother us, no? Would it bother others? I'm sure it might and hence I'm telling you about it now. There weren't many staff on duty and we were some of the last of the lunch crowd to arrive. They easily accommodated our table of 6 and we were happily sat in the corner overlooking the river. While we waited for lunch we waxed lyrical about how the space could be converted into a beautiful weekender. Their menu is part bistro / part cafe. I opted for the grilled barramundi with an Italian tomato sauce and roast kipfler potatoes. With two gluten intolerant diners, this dish was our salvation from an afternoon of regret and pain. I also took a breath expecting regret upon ordering a flat white here but surprisingly it was quite a satisfying cup of coffee. Less foam than others but this was actually perfect for me. A definite winning selection amongst our group and a venue I'd gladly return to for a casual, slow-paced and indulgent holiday meal.

I've given this place 3 attempts over the last 12 months and the coffee is good, menu is typical, but reliable and the servers every time made me feel like I was an inconvenience. And it wasn't cool Newcastle young people servers, it was mature women who wanted to make me feel small at every chance they got. It was like they had a huge chip on their shoulders. Rolled their eyes, ignored my friends request for no onion and when I asked what was in something they just said 'read the menu'. Lotus is uncomfortable due to the staff. There are a couple of other cafe options in the area and if you have a choice, take just about any of them over Lotus.

After drinking an awful smoothie recently in Sydney I was hesitant to order the banana version and settled on the Prince frappe consisting of mango, raspberry and pineapple. ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS! Regardless, it remains one of my "go to" cafes when in Newcastle for a consistently good breakfast (try the salmon - you'll never turn back) and a coffee. There's a gorgeous outdoor courtyard or upstairs area to dine in. Be warned though, this is one popular lady so she fills up quickly during peak dining times. On my last visit I feel like they'd maybe changed ownership as although still good it didn't pack as much of a punch and the whole book serving was a new thing. Frankies' don't disappoint me now!
