Server was or is Augustine (male)! Found name of Chef is Chef Frank! After all, any restaurant cannot be successful without the chef or the chefs! I ordered Child Menu of Cheese Quesadilla (hope Quesadilla spelled right)! It was cut into four slices, came with rice and beans with cheese on top of the beans! Filled the entire plate! Not bad for nine dollar and twelve cents with tax! When I went to pay, the cashier say if you do not have twelve cents, she probably saw me try get change from my pocket, so of the ten dollar bill, she gave not eighty eight cents back but full one dollar back in change! Wow! Yum! I'm picky about beef tacos, and these were ultra good. Ground beef, crispy shells, beans and rice (traditional) all wonderful. Chips and salsa were awesome to start. Got the combo plate with crunchy taco / enchilada it was great. Also had the chicken tostada and it was so good. They would have been an acceptable snack for an evening at home watching TV. The carne asada dinner was okay. The rice and beans, and the enchilada met expectations. The beef was a little bland. Service was good. My diet Coke glass was always full. The ambience is extremely casual like a small family-owned restaurant. All in all it was a bit overpriced for the food quality. This place is awful! We came for a late lunch. Almost every table was dirty and when we asked that our table be wiped off you would think we had committed some sort of crime. The surly waier wiped it off and accusingly asked: " Are you OK with this, now?" Seriously? We waited for 30 LONG minutes for our food to arrive. 30 minutes! There was hardly anybody in the place. How long does it take to slap together a simple plate of Mexican food? I'm guessing about three minutes. So: Why did we have to sit there for over half an hour? When the food finally came, it was terrible. Everything was covered in a slimy sauce loaded with sodium. The food was tasteless and colorless as well. Our waiter never came back to check on us. Cafe Delicias, located in old town Auburn, CA, is one of four members of a small chain of restaurants in Placer County that offer fine Mexican cuisine, to all who enjoy fine dining in California's Gold Country. As you enter the restaurant, the main dining room exhibits the atmosphere of a Mexican cantina, housed inside an updated building, that traces it's roots back to the late 1800's. The decor is fun, festive, colorful and welcoming, and reflects the taste of the California gold country, meshed with the atmosphere of Mexico. I chose to sit in the banquet room, or second dining room, whatever you choose to label it as, because it is naturally lit from a skylight, which made for great photography. The room is decorated in bricks - most likely from the days dating back to the founding of Auburn in the 1860's - along with cedar wood paneling, painted a sort of cedar tone color of paint. Period photos of Auburn, along with photos of the historic mining days grace the walls, along with lots of Mexican decor to let you know, after all, you're enjoying fine Mexican cuisine in a Mexican restaurant. Note the red, white and green balloons, which represent the national colors of Mexico. My host brought a basket of fresh tortilla chips and two varieties of in-house made salsa to my table, soon after I was seated. This was a truly unexpected, but welcome surprise, as this fine appetizer wasn't listed on the menu. The corn tortilla chips were fresh, crispy and deep fried "just right" to hold together, yet to be able to easily break apart, and hold together well for dipping. The large basket was meant to serve two people, but I was dining solo, and treated to a single basket. Yowza! I was treated to two small bowls of salsa that were made in-house, with a bowl of "Salsa Cruda" along with another bowl of chili-vinegar based salsa, with lots of flavor and a moderate amount of heat. From the "Lunch" menu, I went with "#30 Tostada Choice," which gives you a choice between ground beef, chicken or shredded beef. Like all choices on the "Lunch" section of the menu, my lunch came with Mexican rice and refried beans. Surprise! As it was not listed on the menu, I enjoyed a small salad as an appetizer. The main event of my lunch was a tostada, which I rarely order, but it sounded good today. The tostada started on a semi-crispy, medium size corn tortilla, which was fried just right, so you could pick up the tostada with your hands and enjoy it "cave man" style, or eat it with the aid of a fork. I used a fork, as I'm just slightly on the civilized side when it comes to fine dining... The shredded beef was tender, seasoned and juicy, and was placed directly upon the corn tortilla. The portion size was not large, but it was ample and just right for lunch. Toppings included a small mountain of fresh, shredded lettuce, diced tomato, and shredded Mexican cheese, which made my tostada complete. Side dishes included Mexican rice, which was good, but not noteworthy along with refried beans, topped with perfectly melted, Mexican cheese, which added a lot of "goodness" to this delicious lunch. The tostada was simply delicious, and held together well when eaten with a fork, which was my option today. It was simply delicious with the right meat-tortilla-to-toppings formula, which made for great enjoyment. The sides of rice and beans enhanced the great lunch. The lunch I enjoyed could be described as Mexican cuisine, with a definite slant to American tastes, as it was very different than similar cuisine that I've enjoyed during my countless trips to Mexico. But, this is Auburn, and it's dining in California's Gold Country, and the food is delicious, and the atmosphere is friendly, at Cafe Delicias, in old town Auburn! As the name implies, Cafe Delicias serves delicious, "mainstream" Mexican cuisine, in a friendly dining atmosphere, in old town Auburn, along the historic Lincoln Highway. The service and food was excellent. I was part of seven guy lunch group ( we rotate around Auburn on Thursdays) who showed up around noon for lunch. The place is pretty large with two dining areas and a full bar area. As we came in our drink orders were taken and salsa and chips placed on the table. After we all arrived our orders were taken. We ordered across the menu and everything was authentic and tasty. The cubed pork in my Chimichanga was very moist, tender and tasty. Our server was timely showing up if we need a beer refill or anything else. We get one check and it was correct and professionally handled. We, as a group, decided we should come back. Parking is somewhat difficult as this place is in Old Town Auburn. There is lots of parking in a public lot but one has to walk a bit. read more

Today we went for a drive and decided to stop for Mexican food. We have never been here before and wanted to give it a try. The service was good, with drinks being brought to our table pretty fast and the chips and salsa were excellent. My husband ordered a chili Colorado plate. Big pieces of beef in a very good sauce with plenty of tortillas on the side. I ordered a three item combo. I got a chili relleno, a beef enchilada and a tamale. The relleno was good with just the right balance between breading and chili. The beef enchilada was excellent! I actually wish I had gotten three of those instead. The tamale was disappointing. The masa was mush. Almost like it wasn't cooked at all. There was no firmness to it and I would not order that again. The beans were very good and I usually don't like Mexican rice, but I ate it all. We stopped and ate here a month or so ago. The service was excellent and the food was good. We caught the restaurant right before the dinner rush. The restaurant seems to get busy and was filling up. Our meals were very reasonably priced and came out pretty quickly. The meal started off with a small salad, which I thought was a nice touch. My wife had a Chili Relleno and Carne Assad Soft Taco. She really liked the meal. I had a Tamale that was topped with a Mole Type Sauce and a Chicken Burrito (pictures attached). Because the air quality improved and the weather now bearable, we decided to go on a Sunday Brunch date at a restaurant we've never visited. Auburn has been our home for about 6 years and I'm confused as to why I've yet to visit this eatery. We were immediately given the freshest salsa and chips I've had in awhile, paired with another super spicy dip.I ordered the #9 (tamales and enchiladas) combo and my partner ordered the #1 (2 crunchy tacos) combo. The combos came with a salad (neutral), Spanish rice (10/10) and refried beans (8/10). I know the food is going to be appetizing when their Spanish rice is amazing. I loved it! One of the best I've ever had; comparable to SoCal. My enchilada was enjoyable. Loved the amount of cheese and the flavor of the sauce. My tamale was also good -- tasted homemade like how my tia use to make it. Overall, we enjoyed the food, the service, prices, entertainment and prime location. My lady and I had lunch at Café Delicias in Auburn a few days ago. It was early in the day and we appeared to be the first customers in. 3 or 4 other folks trickled in by the time we were finishing up. The décor seemed a little dated. Service was not bad and the menu offered many dishes that looked tempting. We started with chips and salsa and added a small dish of guacamole (which was majorly overpriced). The iced tea was flavorful / good. Between us we ordered the El Grande Salad (basic Taco Salad) and a Taco and Chile Relleno meal. The Taco Salad .... which looked good when presented, had virtually "no" beef whatsoever ... way too much lettuce .... disappointing. The Beef Taco and Chile Relleno were just OK ... certainly nothing special. I found the rice to be on the cold side. read more
