the pup and I took a delightful walk along the beach wall and settled in for breakfast with our buddy Kevin at CAFE ELYSA. you order at the register inside. all the baked stuff under glass looked amazing. the SALMON TOAST special was weak: two slices of toasted Wonder-style bread, a wafer-thin slice of cured salmon, heavy on the sprouts and feta. between the cheese and the fish cure, way too salty. the menu had a lot of more interesting offerings, but I was craving a bagel and was seduced by the low, sweet siren song of a piss-poor stand in. that's kinda on me. Kev had the HAM and SWISS CHEESE QUICHE with toast and hashbrowns. he raved about the egg pie and it looked straight up amazing until he slathered on the ketchup. I've eaten here several times and 5 stars. But the last time, the food was subpar. My wife ordered the 101 omelet. It looked great, but the green peppers were raw, good thing she ordered it with no onions. The raw green peppers just ruined the omelet. The cantaloupe wasn't cut properly too. They left the green rine on most of the cantaloupe. I ordered a sausage breakfast burrito, it was good but way to greasy. I don't know if they used too much butter on the eggs or the hashbrowns were greasy. But my plate had a lot of liquid from the burrito. Hopefully this will be just a one time problem. Another grip is they discontinued there green sauce. They only have red. The red is way too hot, you can't even enjoy your food. Service was good though. read more

For a great beach location I was expecting better food. It was good, but plain. Whenever I eat at a restaurant, my hope is that the food is better than I can cook at home. This just tasted like homemade basic food. No complaints about the food at all, it just didn't impress me. Only ONE restroom in the whole place was unrealistic with so many tables packed into a tight space. It would be difficult to manage a wheelchair or walker through this place. I will say that the service was friendly and kind. It is a more relaxed less fancy environment than some of the other places but I wasn't super impressed. read more

Came here for a casual family breakfast. It was packed on a Saturday morning, but service was still quick and friendly! It is a counter-order spot with casual self-seating. I noticed they have a very large menu with decent prices, covering breakfast, lunch, coffee, and various other beverages, snacks, and a huge pastry display. I came closer to closing and they still served my friend and I with a smile on their face. Nice outdoor seating and they have their own parking on the side of the building. A great spot to pop in and take a walk down to the beach with your coffee. Public restroom, and their delicious almond horse shoe, marzipan dipped in chocolate was very delicious. It was wheat free but not celiac friendly because it is cross contaminated with the other pastries which I am happy they informed me about. Came on a Sunday morning around 10am for breakfast. You order at the counter and find a seat, it's a fast paced environment (line moved fast) with slow cooked food (took some time for the food to come out), just like eating at home! Everything was fresh and great pricing for portion sizes. Got the veggie scramble with a side of fruit and there was a great size fruit serving. Also got the veggie omelet which I will get cheese in next time and the hash browns which were toasted! One of our fav breakfast spots on Sunday. The food is good and I just love their croissants! Parking can be tricky but when you get a spot - you are good!! The service is simple and nothing special, same for table and chairs. The snickers latte was one of the best lattes I've ever had. It is definitely a vacation treat, but very worth it. They do not cut any corners, these breakfast sandwiches were full to the brim. I don't eat much meat so I asked for avocado instead of sausage in my Spicy Breakfast Sandwich. It is really rare to not be charged for subbing a protein for avocado (even though it makes sense). You order at the counter then they give you a number that you display on your table. I ordered the Egg Plate breakfast with my eggs scrambled, crispy bacon and half fruit and half hash browns. The eggs were cooked nicely. The quantity appears less than normal. The bacon was 70% crispy. The hash browns were cooked perfectly but needs some seasoning. The fruit was hit and miss. Most of the strawberry pieces had brown spots and the honeydew pieces were a little slimy. They brought my breakfast quickly and they have a beautiful patio to enjoy it. read more

I thought for a second I accidentally ordered off of the kids menu because it looked like a mini chicken wrap you would get at a fast food place. Lived in Carlsbad my entire life and have never been here before. Took my mom here for a little birthday breakfast after a beautiful beach walk on the sea wall. Got Carlsbad Benedit and my mom got the two egged breakfast with bacon. The bacon looked a little under cooked and the meal took over 35 minutes to come out. I was here to order a chocolate croissant, early bird breakfast sandwich, and a coffee, but they have cold and hot veggie sandwiches that I totally want to try. Our first and last visit to Cafe Elysa was a great disappointment. A restaurant should not serve Smoked Salmon Benedict without removing the blood line in the Salmon and the club sandwich had less than Deli quality Turkey and Ham. The only attraction to this restaurant is Location Location Location. Also, the staff should be more attentive to the Tapatio Hot Sauce bottles and wipe off the crusty and dried remnants under the bottle caps. This makes me question the attention to detail in the kitchen if they don't care about basic sanitation that is visible to the customers. Also, my Salmon Benedict was served barely warm and had to be remade.which did not please me as my wife had to dine alone until my Benedict was served again. Also, no Tabasco for the egg dishes? You order inside and get a number and then sit outside. They'll bring your drinks and food to your table. A bit later when my sandwich was brought up to the table, the bread was not a baguette but a sub type bread. What a gem! Stopped in after filling our alkaline water jugs down the street. Hubby & I split the bacon breakfast burrito with green salsa on the side and the ham, egg & cheese croissant. The burrito was delicious with perfectly cooked hashcbrowns and the green salsa was an excellent accent with a smooth texture and mild spice level. The star of the show was the croissant sandwich though! The sweet ham, creamy melted cheese, perfectly cooked egg and buttery croissant were making my taste buds sing! Hubby agreed, he was getting the croissant sandwich all to himself next time. He also got a black coffee and said it was "good". They had so many delicious looking pastries and desserts in the case. The outdoor patio is much bigger than other pictures led me to believe so I was glad to have easily found tables for our large party. They are quick to clean the tables so I never saw anyone waiting even though it was a beautiful sunny weekend morning. They have a private parking lot, but it's small. Cafe Elysa is usually our go to place for breakfast/lunch after boating. Their breakfasts are really good and the prices used to be decent, but they have increased significantly. Today my husband ordered a turkey and avocado sandwich, which he had previously ordered and enjoyed very much. They used to be $15 and now they are $17, which is pretty pricey for a sandwich. Today he said it was different and not as good. When he opened up the sandwich it literally had ONE piece of turkey on it. Very disappointing! I also agree with another reviewer that they don't wipe down the tables. When people left they picked up the condiment baskets, but didn't wipe down the tables. I guess we will have to look for another go to place for lunch. read more
