I recently used this venue for my 80s themed 50th birthday party and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Working with Mel and the team was a breeze. They made every decision easy and worked with my JukeBox company so well that I didn't have to worry about a drop off or pick up. Cafe Komodo sports a seasonal menu, an indie kid vibe and an organic is better attitude, all of which I am highly partial to. The setting of Komodo is truly different, there are plenty of retro tables and chairs with vintage adornment over the walls and laid back feel throughout the cafe. A range of fair trade teas and coffees are here to sip on as well as a few other fresh juices and smoothies to tickle your fancy. The food here comes out quickly and I love their menu, particularly when with the changing menu, you want to come back soon. I had the nachos here last time and loved every bit of it. Their dessert menu isn't quite as big as I expected with cakes on display, but with the hours being primarily during daylight, its to be expected. Why haven't I been to café komado earlier? I guess I don't get to Prospect often. But, this is a damn good reason to go out of my way to travel here. Walk down the alleyway just off the main road. Look out for that sign, as it is an easy one to miss!! This café is set up behind the Little City Studio offices and really feels like you have steps into someone's funky garage. Check out all the cool old block mounted pictures and records on the walls. Retro furniture and décor. There is a great collection of vintage gear here. But, for me it's all about the food! Oh yeah, a vegos and vegans dream. The menu is full of lots of options to cater for different dietaries. Which is great! This is your one stop brunch shop with juices galore, waffles, pancakes, and big brekkie plates. All cooked delightfully and just look so damn pretty. You must try the zucchini fritters! Gahhhhh with beetroot puree , poached eggs and greens. It's always exciting when a new chef starts at a café. You can taste when they are excited about a new project! I tried some platters for a function as well. A range of frittatas, vegan quesadilla's, pizzas, croissants, fruit.... So many options, so tasty and really well priced! If you are after somewhere different to hold a function, I really recommend speaking to the staff here. They are so accommodating. I also really loved the teas brought out later with lovely home cooked muffins. They had a lemongrass and ginger tea. I think I may have chugged the whole pot! Urban funk at its best. A relaxed atmosphere with an environment that ranges from vibrant and raucous, to sublime and peaceful depending on who and how many are there. 70's furniture and a beard friendly workplace may not set this apart from other urban cafe's in the 10's but being apart isn't what Komodo seems to be about. It's comfort, home, culinary cuddles. Inside/outside seating, background music, plants, art, all combine to create an atmosphere that makes to take time to breathe, relax, and consider ordering a second round of whatever you came here for. Coffee is served in your grandmothers funky cup and saucers. Nothing particularly stunning on the coffee menu. 'Hot spiced apple' seems unique and is something we will try in the future. There is a brunch menu, meaning you'll always find something filling. Today I had a standard menu item. Bacon and eggs. Toasted rye bread (that came pre buttered, something I'm not a fan of) dill scrambled eggs and well cooked bacon, a side of baby spinach and a dollop of tomato currant and onion relish made this breakfast stand up and get counted. It's licensed, meaning you lunch can be accompanied with a glass of wine (short but local wine list) a beer/cider, or replace your inch all together and have a cocktail or carafe of sangria. The second you hear the first few notes is every single time I walk down your little fairylight-webbed passage and get excited for your poached eggs and retro furniture. The first verse is how freakin' lovely and welcoming your staff are, and the chorus is when your amazing Vegan Heaven (with added eggs that make it not-so Vegan...) arrives on the table. Coming here is guaranteed to chill you out. It's very relaxed on a weekday, but come for dinner or when one of their smooth jazz bands are playing and it's suddenly pumping. I discovered today this place is as fun as they say! Seventies vinyl kitchen tables and chairs, a chandelier with only one working bulb, a feature wall of old records, a sweet little vine covered beer garden: shabby chic, when it works, it works. The manager is super friendly and welcoming and they serve huge milkshakes for the little ones to drink and have an excellent range of ciders. I only hung out for a wine but will be back to try the wholemeal date pancakes: I've heard breakfast here is fantastic. The music is straight from Triple J mornings with Zan and they supply Frankie and Peppermint magazine for the discerning young art types. I enjoyed hanging out here so much I was even willing to put up with the mindless conversation behind me about who loved Kirsten Dunst the most in that 'ahmaaazing' new arthouse film. I don't know how they can keep a cafe made mostly out of corrugated iron so fresh and cool in the heat, the fans weren't even going. But whatever they're doing, I love it. I checked out the cool little back room and the manager assured me it's popular for functions, as illustrated by the young girls tripping in and out of the place with flowers and birthday balloons. Those who know me well will know that I am very aprehensive about eating somewhere that I have not first been able to check the menu online. It's a bit odd, I know, but hey we've all got our own little quirks, right?! So I think that's why it too me so long to get around to coming here - but now I have, I am so so glad! Let's start with the decor - LOVE IT! There is a totally funky 70s vibe going on here and I want to steal their tables and chairs and knick knacks and deck out my house - so awesome! There are tables inside and outside, which is great on lovely sunny days. I ordered a serve of bacon and eggs - which sounds kind of boring but it really wasn't! They serve the eggs scrambled with dill and top it off with some tasty home made chutney and it's a great flavour combination! The eggs are all free range which makes me feel happy on the inside! I also has a super awesome delicious vanilla milkshake and a taste of my friends awesome looking berry smoothie, which tasted even better than it looked! Komodo is rad. The food is ddeeelicious and the staff are usually variations on hippy/ hipster/ stoner/ insert generic trendster name here. They've always been super friendly to me although sometimes quite slow moving - but hey, it IS breakfast time after all. I usually have some sort of eggs / eggs mushrooms / or raisin toast number. I think they cook everything in a regular domestic kitchen - you can see them hard at it from the counter which may account for the relaxed attitude to time keeping. I love taking people from out of town here, as you have to walk down a really skinny alleyway to enter the cafe from prospect road and they appear to have a bit of an Alice in Wonderland experience with it. I think you're supposed to order and pay at the counter but for some reason I seem to engineer some form of table service on each visit and this flexibility is admirable. To accompany the domestic kitchen there is a lot of formica, vinyl and even some astroturf. It's also super pleasant sitting outside in the private backyard. Having been there for a few engagement parties, I've found it a great venue for functions too with free flowing wine and great finger food - cheeses, cheese galore. The only problem is the after party, as prospect road is more of a daytime hangout but grab some cabs and you'll be set. read more

I have been to Komodo a few times now and I must admit that my initiation was spectacular with a brunch spent drinking bloody marys (well they do have vegetables in them) that quickly turned into dinner... Anyway, I digress. The entrance is tiny, so you have to know what you are looking for. The cafe is on a hammerhead property, and I remember asking my friend if I was about to end up in a bath of ice minus a kidney or two, but thankfully at the end of the trip you end up at a retro oasis. Filled with all sorts of quirk, great smells, music unlike the pallid lounge served up in most cafes these days, and an owner who knows how to create a sense of occasion. I must point out, that this is not a cafe for those with OCD, or those with an uptight nature. You don't come here for white linen on the table and deferential service. You come here for the experience of great food, in a nook of the non-everyday hosted by freewheeling people who are about having a good time while they work to look after their guests. To this end, the owner Mel places great stock in ensuring that her staff are pumped, and it is not unusual to find them larking about having a great time with guests and playing games. It all adds to the sense of fun and adventure. The food is great with a thoughtful menu, and the coffee is good, though would be better if they cleaned their machinery more often. But at the end of the day after your fourth bloody mary, when the sun is shining and lubricated conversation is flowing around the table, and the staff are happy and you are laughing at the them all lined up to catch champagne corks as they pop while Mel opens another bottle of bubbles for another customer... you know what? You are transported into a little space of wonderful, and not much really matters. read more

Oh Komodo. Actually a place where dreams begin. It was working here (YEARS) ago that I understood that it WAS possible to have a dream to start a cafe space, and that it COULD ACTUALLY HAPPEN. For real. The then owner, Louise started the whole sherbang on a ridiculously low budget, a shed full of vintage finds and, well, a shed space that she could make her own. And that she did! Now under new owners but yet retaining that real feel, Komodo is an 'original' original space, and I'm so grateful we get to have it in our city! read more

I really love this place. Set off the busy Prospect Rd you would have no idea what was happening out in the real world. Cafe Komodo definitely makes you feel like you've stepped into somewhere really special. Their homely feel is definitely attributed to the mismatched chairs and tables (and wonky floor), but more than that the staff are all super lovely and they make a mean brunch. I've always had a great cup of coffee here, and very much surprised at their range of delicious meal options. Not one bad word to say about this place. Conflict of interest note:- I'm friends with the woman who is the model on the table centre piece photographs. I would, however, love this cafe even without their Mum as a friend. It's reminiscent of my inner city Sydney haunts in the 80's - quirky, eclectic, simple but delicious food, great coffee and, unlike those Sydney gems, a wine list with lovely SA grog. Oh and not just wine! The story goes that owner David has the last bottles of lime tequila, secured by the importer after the manuacturer couldn't continue after his hostage payment had been delivered. I love places like this that are discovered because of a small sign at the front and a long, dark and mysterious walkway. They said curiosity killed the cat, but my nine lives are still going because I just can't help myself when it comes to unleashing hidden places of the sort, just like Café Komodo. I absolutely love the interior, its sort of 80's style mixed in with some modern day funk. Café Komodo also holds a sense of familiarity in an odd way, which I find comforting. As strange as that sounds, and one of the best features in its décor is one of the walls, which is covered with old records. Tucked back off Prospect Road, you can't help but have that smug "in the know" feeling as you make your way down the narrow vine-covered laneway and into the quirky retro decor of the cafe where Formica and Laminex abound and a feature wall of old vinyl gives hints to the eclectic mix of tunes that may be playing during your visit. There's also a courtyard garden or a back lounge area for further seating options. Brunch offerings are a range of organical goodness and the serves are plentiful. Coffee is good and the smoothies are amazing. In addition to the selection of cakes in the case, if you can't find anything to please you, the problem is not with the cafe. I've been to Cafe Komodo a handful of times and have just realised there has always been a child involved; first it was kids of friends and now I have my own to bring along. This is a breastfeeding (and beard!) friendly cafe and high chairs are available. Expensive and inattentive staff. I stood at the bar for ages while another woman was being served (who was chatting endlessly with the server). Another waitress stood behind literally staring at me repeatedly, clearly realizing I was unnecessarily waiting ... and did nothing! Food wasn't worth the price. What a funky monkey! I've brought so many friends here and everytime was met with great food, great ambience and a lot of fun. The outside seating is the main draw card for me, breakfast and brunch perches with a coffee are what I look forward to all week. The owner is always really lovely and the food is awesome, highly recommend the dip platter at night with some cocktails the babaganoosh is to die for and comes in a cute and kitsch setup. Found this place via Yelp as I like to try new places. I met my friend at 9.30 in the morning and we left two hours later. We had a couple of yummy coffees and a light breakfast and a good yarn. I love a retro look so the cafe's decor was very pleasing to my eyes. The cafe gradually filled up but we didn't feel under any pressure to have to leave. I enjoyed my time and will make an effort to go back. It was disappointing to leave the oasis and get back out into the outside world. read more

Hidden away off Prospect Road, this is a great feature of the local coffee/dining scene. I like the decor-hard to describe but how does retro kitsch sound?, and the food and coffee. I dislike that the service is sometimes glacial especially during busy periods. And sometimes the music is just too out-there and too loud. Cafe Komodo is kind of like your eccentric-but-cool aunty's place - it attracts hideous adjectives like 'funky' or 'quirky', but it is genuinely a nice place to be. Down a vine-covered alley, off of Prospect Rd is a small corrugated-iron room decorated with vinyls on the walls and a wall-papered bar. There's a little bustling kitchen, and out the back an outdoor seating area decked out with candles and fairy-lights at night. I used to live in Prospect with my folks as a teenager, and I thought Cafe Komodo was the bee's knees (yeh, I said bee's knees, what about it?). Then I moved out, and didn't come back for five years or so. Until recently, when a friend of mine booked her thirtieth birthday there. During the day, Komodo is a nice little cafe, somewhere you might go for a smoothie or brunch. On Friday nights (and for small private functions) it hosts live music: local songstresses, groups of men in three-piece suits playing clarinet and piano accordian, that kinda thing. Anyway, I had a really nice time at my friend's thirtieth. The bar service were really friendly and they had a great collection of boutique beers and ciders (vital for entertaining the summer evening early-thirties hipster crowd). The lighting was sweet and homely, and the outdoor area was particularly lovely to hang out in. And there was a lot of dip and bread which is essential when you need to do some proper socialising while also getting loaded. The performance by regular Emily Davis was great too. Cafe Komodo is another quirky hipster cafe that serves brilliant food. I have to explain why hipster food is good. They always have good vegetarian options, it is healthy, customer service is good and it isn't too expensive, cause hipsters don't like to spend too much. The interior decorating is always cool to look at as well. Now Komodo serves the best vegetarian burger. I talk about vegetarian burgers a lot, but this one you can't get sick of. It is served on a massive hunk of turkish bread, has vegan coleslaw, actual tofu slices, amazing satay sauce and other salad ingredients inside. This is the physical embodiment of vegetarian perfection. The inside seats quite a few and is decorated well, there is some quirky art work on the floor and you can sit on an old couch to eat if you like. The staff are always friendly, sometimes not particularly fast, but the atmosphere itself isn't too fast paced. I never seem to leave room for dessert, but i would recommend doing so. Enter through an almost hidden alleyway draped with hanging leaves and vines you suddenly find yourself in another era, where funk and blues are playing blissfully in the background and vinyl surrounds you whether it's records on the wall or the multi coloured seats sprayed around some wonky cafe tables. Entering you will be greeted with a hello and a smile. Menus are right in front of you so grab one choose a seat either in their trendy sixties/seventies style interior or take a seat in their patio where little birds will most likely pop their heads up to watch you peruse the menu. Gluten free? Vegan? Vegetarian? This place can cater. And did I mention all day breakfast?! The coffee is average (too bitter for my taste). But the staff are lovely. As I walked through the gate, I was so excited. The vibes were amazing. The place was very well decorated but thats not it.. The customer service is very nice and the people are friendly. Although there isnt a lot of items to choose from the ones that are on there are amazing and very healthy. I got the steak burger and it was delicious very satisfied. Local to me so I've been a few times the last for years and although food is generally freshly prepared and good the wait time can be too long especially if you take little ones. This happened to me even when the place was nearly empty 40 mins was inexcusable. Mains are generally of the sandwich or burger variety with a healthy hippy influence. Used to have plenty of books and magazines but these have disappeared. Gets a bit drafts and wet in bad weather. Interesting retro 70s decor- prob one of the first places to do this. Cakes I think are brought in from elsewhere but usually delicious. Nice range of bottled craft beer and ciders. Also have live music on weekends. read more
