You walk in to this huge glass case of probably about fifty different cakes, multiple types of strudel, gelato and truffles. I was in sugar heaven. After ordering at the counter, we grabbed a seat and really enjoyed watching all the specialty gelato drinks come out. So naturally, I had to order one and decided on the eise kaffee, which was phenomenal. While the simplicity of a drink only containing coffee, gelato and whipped cream is enjoyable in itself, I think this cafe must had added some magic heavy cream, sugar and extra gelato to make it even that much better. The little decorative umbrella was also appreciated! While the drink would have been enough in itself, Cafe Michele is also where I had my favorite slice of cake during my visit to Germany. It was called a Johannisbeerkuchen, or red current tart. I would normally be turned off by anything that has a jelly consistency, by the texture of the red currents was a perfect balance between sweet and bitter. The meringue on the top literally led to me have a spiritual moment, it was that good. It was the prefect texture, airy yet creamy. The outside of the cake was also dusted in shredded almonds, which was a nice contrast to the creamy and buttery cake. The second cake we tried was the Wurzburg Winzertorte, which was reminiscent of a coffee cake and my mom's favorite cake. Out of all the bakeries we tried, the fact that Cafe Michele will be remembered most is saying something! I would kill just to sit here for an afternoon, people watch, eat cake and drink coffee. Those Germans have got it good!

The waiters were all incredibly friendly. I speak enough German to get by but my fiance does not. They treated him so kindly and explained the menu in English better than I could have (of course). Our evening waiter, Sören, was an absolute delight and made us feel incredibly welcome in Würzburg. I highly recommend this restaurant, Germans and tourists alike!

I'm going to have to give Walter Friedel a 2 star review based on my first experience there. When…read morewe walked in, I was very excited to see the huge selection of desserts on display. We were on a hunt for Schneeballen (not exactly a hard task in Rothenburg ob der Tauber). The reason we chose Walter Friedel was because they had a very large assortment of Schneeballen compared to some of the other bakeries in town. The shopkeeper gave us an overview of the different Schneeballen. She showed us a few flavors which she said contained delicious creamy or chocolate fillings. They had 2 different sizes of Schneeballen... small and large. It was only possible to get the delicious filling if you ordered a large Scneeball, however. I was sold on the promise of the delicious chocolate filling, so I ordered a large Nougat Scneeball with chocolate filling. My counterparts went with the small sized dark chocolate with nuts. We also ordered a hot chocolate, but were informed that we needed to order the hot chocolate upstairs. We went upstairs and waited for our schneeballen to arrive. It took quite awhile for anyone to appear in the empty upstairs area so that we could order our hot chocolate. I found out later that she was too interested in reading her book in the back corner to be bothered with paying customers. We eventually ordered our hot chocolate and received our Schneeballen. They looked delicious! I started eating the large sphere, very much looking forward to discovering the chocolatey filling. I ate and ate and ate... I was getting a little concerned when I reached what I perceived to be halfway and had not yet had an encounter with filling. I thought that maybe... just maybe, this schneeball had been filled unevenly and that hopefully the filling was taking up a large portion of the second half of my schneeball. Well, I dug into the orb a bit more and was extremely disappointed to find no filling whatsover... and found myself wishing I had ordered a small sized scheeball, since the large ones didn't have filling anyways. I mentioned to the shopkeeper that my schneeball had a lack of filling... thinking that maybe they forgot to fill that one. She then claimed that it is possible that some of the chocolate coating could drip into some of the cracks of the scheeball and that's what she considered filling. Very strange... since chocolate coating can also drip into the cracks of the small schneeballen. However, we were told that only three of the large and none of the small schneeballen contain filling. Anyways, I would not order another large schneeballen from that establishment. I am guessing that my amount of stars may increase if I visit Walter Friedel at a later date... based on the amazing looks of most of the desserts there, they are bound to have something tasty!
