This jewel of a spot, in the TRI, features a cozy, charming ambiance coupled with lights rigged for romance that aid in perfecting the vibe. Everything on the menu is delicious & flavorful; although it's one of the very few fine dining restaurants in JC, it's rarely crowded. I highly recommend the miso-glazed chilean see bass with panko crust. And, if you fancy yourself a lover of juice of the grape, they have a nice wine list. If the oenophile in you is unsure of what to imbibe, I recommend giving the wine flights a look. Check out the 2nd bar in the back for low-key meetups with friends or that special someone. Cafe Lola gives "hole in the wall" vibes, but once you go in it's quite cute! The mid day ambiance resembles a cafe more than a bistro. It is a bit loud and I don't recall any light music playing. The food was phenomenal. Staff was attentive. Prices were as expected. ($$) Worth a visit! read more

BRUNCH REVIEW: Café Lola for brunch is casual, lots of drinking and eating at the bar, loud talking and laughing. I ordered the Chorizo and Avocado Eggs Benedict and a Bloody Mary. The Bloody Mary was delicious and light on the vodka. The eggs Benedict though, I have complaints about; the avocado wasn't ripe and set like a lump on top, the egg muffin is clearly something prepackaged and was hard to cut through, the hollandaise sauce was mid, but the worst part was the poached eggs were completely cooked through with no running-an Eggs Benedict sin. Potatoes were bland and served with ketchup, this would have been a great opportunity for Cafe Lola to have a signature sauce. My husband ordered the Croque Madam and a Bloody Mary spicy. It had a kick to it and he found it delicious, but we both preferred the regular. The sandwich itself was over toasted and difficult to cut through, but the egg on top was cooked very well. The meat and cheese had a good flavor to it as well. The meal was definitely good for the price, but food being over cooked, under ripened, and under seasoned unfortunately kept it from being great. Four of us tried Cafe Lola for the first time. First of all our server, Heather was excellent. She was clearly very busy with several tables yet she was right on top of our every need. We started with well-made cocktails. All the food dishes were good, including Salmon Wellington, Crab Cakes, Chilean Sea Bass with Panko Crust, and the Smoked Mozzarella Ravioli. What a great quaint place, the food is very good and there is a variety. The service was exceptional and everyone was very friendly. Last time we went I had the tuna and it was very well prepared. Wowwww! Absolutely incredible! I haven't had food this good in such a long time! We got the bacon wrapped stuffed peppers which were to die for! They were stuffed with herbed cream cheese. For entrees we got the cranberry walnut crusted stuffed chicken (stuffed with golden raisins and herbed goat cheese) and braised beef short ribs (literally falling apart). I'm not a big sweet and salty person, but that chicken is heavenly! Dessert was flourless chocolate cake and brown butter warm cake with vanilla bean ice cream (HIGHLY recommend!! While visiting JC for work, my coworkers and I went here for our lunch break, and it was definitely the move. I got the roast beef panini and soup OTD (forgot what it was; had sausage in it, I know), and they were great. Then we decided to go absolutely bonkers with the desserts for no reason. Chocolate fondue was good (even though fondue isn't my favorite). Tiramisu was served in a wine glass and almost looked like banana pudding; liked the subtly promiscuous look to is, and it was delicious. My profiterole (not pronounced "profitable." Dyslexia struck me again.) was fantastic; basically a mini ice cream sandwich covered in chocolate. That combination could never go wrong. read more

We came in to celebrate our mother's birthday. Everyone was very pleased with their entree in a group of 5. The bacon wrapped dates were awesome!! I be like whoa!! What is a swanky joint like this doing in Johnson City? Cafe Lola is all things swanky for sure. Your girl will love it. Chances are you will too, gents. The menu offers grown up food. And they always offer a special. Lucky for me, I was able to order the fish special before they ran out. It was good. Not out of this world but it was good. And it had an artichoke and olive accompaniment that I enjoyed. My salad to start was also good but it needed more goat cheese. My one pet peeve is that I asked to sample a wine before I order a glass. Doesn't everyone do this?! Amirite? But no tasting came. The reviewer who said this place was pretentious could not be farther off base. It's a cute little bistro in a shopping strip but the interior is nicely decorated. Great food and great service. My cocktail was very creative and refreshing. The goat cheesee appetizer on a baguette with strawberies and balsamic glaze was delicous. I could have eaten three of them. I've even tried to make it at home. Entree of Chilean sea bass was perfect, service excellent. Let me tell you what impressed me more than than the excellent food and service. After I was seated, a gentleman came in and went to the bar and asked for water. He looked rough and hot. I don't know for sure if he was homeless or not, but I think so. Did they run him off? No, they seated him at the bar. He sat there for a while and drank his water which they refilled a couple of times. One of the servers asked him if he would like something to eat, he said no just the water. Server waited a minute and then asked him if she brought him something would he eat it. He said yes. They fed him a great meal at no charge and treated him with respect and dignity. If that's pretentious then I'll take it. Good job Lola. If you're in Johnson City this is a place you must try. I can't express enough how grateful I am for such exquisite, loyal, and most importantly KIND service that I received this evening. I shouldn't just say this evening because every experience I have had has been top tier. If I could give this place more than five stars- I would in a heartbeat. I came in for my weekly Lola Ravioli that I usually just take to-go but something told me to go in, sit down, have a drink and just enjoy it. What a lovely hidden gem. You'd never know such a delightful restaurant was tucked away here. First things first, the bacon wrapped dates stole the show. You HAVE to try those. Next, I'd say the charcuterie board is a must. The pork shank was delicious. The creme brulee was delectable. The restaurant was short staffed but the service and food didn't suffer. There was live music, which would be nice under normal circumstances, but we were catching up with family we hadn't seen in a while, so talking over that was not great. Based on previous reviews I invited two guest for lunch. On entering I was disappointed, the decor was dark and uninviting. Servers were engaged in last minute prep. Dark bare tables, windows covered in drab dressings. uninteresting lighting. The menu was not as represented on the web site. I was expecting appetizers and a lunch menu as posted. We had crab cakes on croissant with side salad. The salad was fresh and nicely presented. The crab cakes were mushy and soft but acceptable for the price. Service was polite. On departure the tables were filling with customers. Mostly ladies. I can not suggest Cafe Lola for a business luncheon or a place to entertain special guest. I'll contiue to visit Asheville for special luncheons and dining or the one restaurant in Johnson City worthy of special times. I will not name that restaurant as I'm not writing this to endorse another business. read more

I was so excited to finally get my husband out for brunch. We decided to go to Cafe Lola based on all the good reviews. We had lunch there a few years ago, and it wasn't very good, but we decided to give it a second chance. I even called the night before to make reservations. Big mistake. It was not busy when we arrived, and yet we sat for over five minutes, waiting to be greeted by our server. The satff just kept looking at us and looking away. They were too busy chatting. Finally, she approached  and actually asked if we just slipped in or actually had a reservation.  Um, the hostess sat us a few minutes ago. The dining room is not that big.  Whatever. She took our food order and brought our drinks. She then came back to mention there is a 2.5% upcharge on credit card payments.  I'm sorry, what? Probably should have told us that first. Oh but, wait, there's more! The food came out, and we were starved. My husband's omelette is in a puddle of yellow liquid and very small. Maybe from the spinach? I don't know. I could not believe it actually made it past the cook and server and made it to the table looking like that. My eggs benedict was well done with a pretty hard yolk. No one came back and checked on us, and we were hungry,  so we ate some of it.  When the server finally came back, my husband told her it was not good. She laughed  at him and said she thought he was joking. The last thing I would like to share is the staff's appearance. Ripped jeans, sweatshirts, and cropped tops are not Sunday brunch appropriate. This is a fun brunch and date spot. Their food is delicious and the portions are fair. They have cute decor. I love the Croque Monsieur sandwich because it's so unique. Ok. All the locals already know this place. I'm not originally from this area but have heard SO MUCH good about it. FINALLY made it in, and let me say they live up to the hype! It's a smaller place, but have an upscale feel to it. Very clean and great taste in decor. Had their lunch specials. Pricing for their lunch specials are too cheap!!! Of course we all love deals, but relative to their quality, I feel it is a complete steal!!!! Sure, their quantity isn't big... but to us, it is absolutely PERFECT!!! We had a variety of selections along with their dessert. All were superb!!! Some of the freshest ingredients for this area. Service wasn't top notch, but regardless still VERY good.
