The people working here could try to be a little friendlier but it may take some hypnosis or some higher power to do so.

As we walked in, we were met with the great aroma of coffee and baked goods. The place was very busy and there were a lot of staff moving around and customers having conversations or in line to order take out. We sat in a separate area downstairs and we were the only guests there. It was somewhat dark but it was private and there were bathrooms downstairs. We tried their tiramisu that was one of the bests I've ever tried. We also ordered their pistachio martini that was a super treat as it also had pistachio gelato. Their cappuccino made me want a second one. I am coming back to this place next time that I visit the North End!

Faint enough that it seems like the coffee grounds were used a few times... the rum cake was okay. It tasted commercially made. Unfortunate because I used to enjoy a coffee and pastry here. The workers were nice but the quality just isn't meeting nearby bakeries... Tables and menus were a bit sticky / dirty and could benefit being wiped down more

She was making my drink. I just walked out leaving it there. I cannot believe what I saw. EDIT Based on Owner Response: So if you watched, you'd see me standing staring open mouthed watching through the blue glass, look around to see if anyone else was seeing what I was, then LEAVE WITHOUT THE DRINK I PAID FOR because of what I saw. I understand you're doing what you need to for your business, but don't try to make it seem like I imagined it. She blew her nose and used the napkin to clean up empty Yakult containers and wipe the counter down. She was not wearing gloves. Repeatedly touched her hair and face and was texting in between tasks. I know there is a competition between Mike's and Modern about who has the best pastries, but Mike wins if you want flavored cannolis. Any flavor you can think of is posted on the walls. I tried the butter pecan and the Dubai chocolate, but I was blown over by the Dubai chocolate. My wife also prefers the macaroons and other cookies at Mike's. Cash only, but the prices are good. Mike's goes crazy with the string when they tie up the boxes...I guess that's a Boston thing. We came back on a rainy day and were able to order right away. This place is worth a visit.

It's probably because it's a block from the Freedom Trail near Paul Revere's house and popular Italian restaurants and shops. If you see people walking around with a white (multiple cannolis/desserts) or blue (single cannoli) box tied with string, you know you must be nearby a Mike's Pastry. Though the line gets long, it does move quickly, and there are periods where it's not so crowded inside. It's cash only at this location. I didn't think I'd be here that day and realized I didn't crab enough cash but saw the sign for Uber Eats and GrubHub pick up, so I just placed an order for pick up from my phone on Uber Eats. It took about 5 minutes when I got my cute blue box order. There is a Bank of America down the same street if you need to withdraw cash which I later did. I'm sure there's also ATMs nearby. I think it's easier and quicker to order through Uber Eats or GrubHub and pick up. I've been here once before about 12 years ago. I tried the pistachio cannoli that time and loved it. This time, I wanted to try a different flavor, so I got the hazelnut cannoli. It didn't have the nuts I was expecting from the photo on the wall. It didn't quite taste like hazelnut to me at all. I regretted not trying something else. I eventually did at Hub Hall (another food hall) connected to North Station. This location is a little more expensive by $1-2 for cannolis compared to the one in Hub Hall and sells other desserts like turnovers, donuts, croissants and sticks if you don't want a cannoli (but then why come here for anything else?) There's also nowhere to sit.
