The situation was a misunderstanding for sure--normally, the Holländische Kakaostube is a place staffed with extremely pleasant old fashioned outfitted ladies flitting about, taking orders for stellar cakes and hot chocolate with more than pleasant aplomb--but the immediate condescending attitude our waiter displayed on this particular day was not. I have never experienced such rude service in my entire life and must admit, was a little taken aback. The Kakaostube is either overworking their staff, this guy badly needs a course in customer service, or he is prejudiced against Americans. Either way, with all the less than 3 star reviews on Qype all having to do with bad service, one can't help but wonder if the Kakaostube has been letting this guy get away with treating their customers in this fashion for years.
We filed our first EVER complaint at the front. I would have given this place 4 stars for their, nonetheless, amazing confections--some must try's are their hot chocolates with Dutch pressed cocoa with a shot of liqueur and their petite fours--if it weren't for this experience; my husband and I are now hesitant to go back because of it. Never has a charming place, one that I even used to consider a gem of Hannover, fallen so far from grace in my list of favorite haunts. As we left the establishment that day, the manager ran after us with a mollifying gift of two chocolate truffles. A nice gesture to say the least, but the chocolates themselves tasted like disenchantment and compromise.
