And the food is SO authentic and SO wonderful. Many years ago I spent two months in Asolo-- in summer course for singers. The Due Mori was one of our favorite dinner spots. The hostess (maybe owner at the time, was a dynamic red-headed Italian diva (in the good sense) named Gabriella. I can still see her smile. Of course I've been back many times since those student days. The place carries on the tradition-- this is the real deal! Bravi tutti!! But ask a local person where to find Naneti's, and they will know, for this is Treviso's most famous Osteria. Here local delicacies abound on the shelves and counter. You can savour local wines along with the traditional local cicheti snacks, featuring bologna ham, fresh country sausage and ossocollo and selections of cold cuts and cheeses served on wooden cutting boards. Beppe and Fabio, the joint owners, immediately make everyone feel at home. They'll hand you morsels to taste and try if you're not sure what you want. The decor is hard to describe. No-one seems to know how old is Naneti's, but it houses some weird and wonderful food- and wine-related implements, a collection of ancient bottles, and the walls are pinned with newspaper cuttings and notices dating back to the 19th Century. The wines are arranged within reach around the walls. Just pick one and hand it over the counter to be opened. There's no seating - everyone just stands and talks - and the crowds overflow into the alleyway outside. You cannot fail to make friends here - I met Max, my closest Italian pal, here over a glass or two of Cabernet Franc. Customers drop in after work to buy produce and wine that will be their evening supper. They usually linger for a chat with friends. Go there!

I had the ribeye, but not like an American ribeye. This thing was very wide, but not thick like we get back home. The flavor however, was awesome. My wife had the fillet, which was excellent. I tasted it as well and it was very soft and tender. It came with a nice cheese sauce, but it was a little overwhelming, so we took some off. The prize of the night was the fried polenta. There are some wooden benches covered with seating pillows. In the middle of the restaurant is a square 'island' bar, without bar stools. The tables are not set. When food is ordered the cutlery is put on the table but needs to be laid in place by oneself. There were tv's at various places however. If this is what you like, be aware though. There are not enough of them to guarentee everybody on a table will be able to see one without turning around. The menu has a large selection of beers, though few on tap. 3 out of about 8 bottled beers were not available when we asked for them. One of the beer glasses had a chip. The edge of the beer glass was sharp because of the missing peace. There was a beer special going on (a poster on the wall told us), but when we got the bill the normal prize for this beer had been charged. When we pointed this out it was changed (without an appology). The food selection is large, but apart from a steak with baked patatoes or pizza, it contains mostly 'lunch style' food based on bread. The quality of the food was high for a pub, not for a restaurant. The music was to loud for a restaurant in my opinion and 80's songs were played.
