Tucked inside the Gran Hotel Via Veneto is the Michelin starred Magnolia. Who am I a mere mortal…read moreto review a restaurant bestowed a star by the Michelin gods you may ask? Without commuting gastronomic blasphemy I shall attempt to answer that question. There are two entrances to the restaurant, one through the hotel and one by the street. Take the separate entrance by the street. It assists you in your gastronomical journey as you are transported to what is a theater of art for food. The chef, Franco Madama, is Rome's Alan Duquesne; actually better as I told him. You have the option of dining on a set menu of 120 per person or a la carte. The courses are divided between "art plates" and regular servings. I chose from each. My antipasto was the Gran Riffelsso an octopus in creamy chocolate sauce. My wife had the Muschio. The former reminds the chef of spring in his hometown and the latter is inspired by the hills of his hometown. I could smell the truffles from 2 feet away. For my first plate I had the spaghetti a la carbonara; perhaps the best I have ever had in my life. For the final plate I had the octopus. The chef gave us complimentary desserts. The food's presentation was bar none. It was perhaps one of the finest meals I have had. Dress is chic and there is a dress code.

This Michelin Star rated restaurant did not disappoint!! The Greatest Chef I've ever been around…read moreFranco Madama (pictured) treated us like we were they only folks in the restaurant!! We went in late and my wife only wanted the risotto but I wanted the full Tasting menu! Normally they don't like to do that because of how long the tasting menu is !! I ate for 3 hours while my wife's palate was jealous!! It was so much greatness on a plate that I can't even describe it made my first day in Rome a very memorable one! The vegetable textures was exactly that, an array of texture! The Ravioli di granchio was an orgasmic experience! The creamy crispy chocolate secrets was perfection in a dessert! I can go on and on but now I'm getting hungry

It had been a long fun packed day and after walking 18 miles I had purposefully chosen this place…read moreon our return journey. I am not one for fine dining usually as its the sort of food that looks nice but leaves you feeling hungry. However I had heard good things about this place. We venue was cosy with soft lighting and exposed brickwork ..quite romantic vibes! The one gent seated us and even provided a charger for my phone. He offered us a wine sample and pointed it out on the menu which was a reasonable €22 bottle which we accepted. The food varied from classic Italian pasta dishes to fish and meat ..the starters were pricey and uninspiring so we just had a bread basket. For mains we had the duck with celeriac and piglet.. while we waited he provided a treat of these cheese balls with turmeric sauce. Our mains came at the right time and were presented beautifully. My duck was a good portion and was the best I had had in a long time. I tried the piglet it was sweet and tasty but not as nice as the duck! To finish we had a tiramisu made with orange and amertto and a lime cheesecake. Both again looked and tasted divine. To finish we tried to order coffee but received hot milk instead which we laughed as it was our fault just asking for latte. Overall a reasonably priced place for beautiful looking food and there was just one guy serving and everything! Such a hard worker!

I had, and enjoyed, the lacquered duck while she had a rigatoni with chorizo and tomato sauce. Very simple ingredients, yet so elegantly cooked and presented. For desert I had the semofreddo and it was beautiful :) The restaurant is in a somewhat conspicuous area, but just keep in mind its very close to hotel Priscilla, about two doors down.

Super pizza place with a lot of other great stuff on the menu…read more I looked with envy at the other tables who were enjoying spectacular plates of spaghetti with mussels. * * * That said, my pizza was a grand slam home run. Many of their pizzas are quite elaborate With all sorts of exotic ingredients. I went super simple. Gorgonzola. Mozzarella. That's it. Just enough Mozzarella to cut the Gorgonzola and make for a good melt. * * * If you have never had a gorgonzola pizza, you have never lived. Just sayin'. * * * P.S. My lovely wife got a Norwegian salmon pizza. The Norwegian salmon was stacked up high on her pizza As if she was in the World Series of Poker and she was a big winner. I have never seen so much salmon on one plate. After our meal, I made a discreet phone call to the Norwegian embassy in Rome asking them if they still had any salmon left. The woman at the embassy assured me the Norwegian salmon supply was fine. That surprises me given all the salmon that was on my wife's pizza.

It was a positive Yelp review that lured us to choose this restaurant for our first night meal…read moreafter traveling from USA. So, I felt that I owed a review of my own in appreciation. Being new to Rome, and having walked 20k steps on our first day, there are an abundance of options a for dining. We wanted something classically Rome nearby to our hotel. The Yelp review of this restaurant was sufficiently positive to entice us. Being American, we appreciate the earlier-than-customary dining options. We arrived at 6pm without a reservation. We were seated immediately. The restaurant is intimate and very well staffed. The wood fire oven is front-and-center and the fresh mozzarella is prominent in display. We ordered a bottle of wine ... all options are very fairly priced. This is nice. We started with a Greek salad to share. It was unlike any American Greek salad ... and a really delight. It is early June but the tomatoes and peppers were ripe and crisp and really fresh. My wife ordered the Marguerite pizza; I opted for the Gorgonzola pizza (the effusive review on Yelp was compelling). Both were solid. We appreciate the thin crust and the crisp edged. The center of both, however, was doughy and somewhat undercooked. Looking around ... the restaurant was over 50% full even at this early hour. Most were Americans. We saw a good number of diners with pasta dishes ... and none were left unfinished. Sadly, we don't have any comparisons to weigh (yet). So, I cannot affirm any "best of" citations, it this is certainly a solid trattoria/pizzeria. The staff are attentive and the food served hot and fresh.
