So the restaurant is a good deal larger than it appears at first sight. The service was perfect and was not uncomfortable by a mixed language group (In-laws speak neither English nor German). The waiter handled everything graciously, brought the baby-chair for our little one (as soon as it was free) without the need for a reminder. Sharing dishes so everybody gets to try everything was no problem either an de got extra knifes and forks. We had deer, pork, Zander and trout. All tasted very good.

The food was about 2 *'s and it's definitely a case of quality over quantity. I got currywurst - the curry sauce tasted bottled, and the sausage wasn't well cooked. My kids got schnitzel and they said it was "mid". Honestly I think German food kind of caps out at 4 *'s - there's only so much you can do with boiled potatoes and kraut and sausages.

As a friend lives in the area and is a militant smoker, always the first stop for an evening of beers. You definately have a colorful mix of the "locals" here and although it's not an "in" place, you get your share of Ottensen's yuppies. It's a fun place though and tends to now be quite full as it is a smoker's hangout. If you enjoy your smoke first- or second-hand, worth checking out if in the area.

I also had the schnitzel (chicken) with the potatoes with green onions and bacon, as well as the cucumber dill salad. Both of these were excellent accompaniment to the schnitzel. The potatoes were not hot when they arrived, I'm not sure if that was intentional or not. The cucumber salad partnered well with the fried schnitzel, balancing the heaviness. The berry compote that sat on the table, provided a slightly sweet and sour edge to the breaded chicken. I tried the pepper corn sauce also. I usually do not enjoy sweet with my savory, but the berry compote was just tart enough to be worth the risk.

I used to live in Frankfurt back in the 80s and love German cuisine. I am from Galveston Tx but all the quote unquote German Restaurants suck. The only one hat was great unfortunately closed. They didn't have the oopa music and wait staff dressed in lederhosen. So anytime I come back I will eat here. Food is great
