    Maldon's Eaglehawk Motel

    Maldon's Eaglehawk Motel

VERY DISAPPOINTING - CERTAINLY NOT AS ADVERTISED My…read moreexperience in staying at this motel was extremely disappointing. When one pulls up next to the charming Old Eaglehawk HOTEL one might be anticipating a touch of comfort and indulgence, but once one has booked into the MOTEL, owned and operated separately, one is told to drive around the back to park and finds a row of cheaply built brick motel rooms. It is my experience that there is a stark contrast between the facilities advertised and those provided, as follows:- 1. The advertised reverse cycle air conditioning, swimming pool. Mini Bar and free in-house movies were not provided. 2. The heater/air-conditioner in my room was from the 1970's or 1908's and rattled loudly and was not near the main part of the room. It was not reverse-cycle as advertised. 3. The television remote control did not work properly. 4. The electric blanket did not work. 5. The motel information booklet which was on the table in my room included instructions on how to access an outside telephone line from the phone in the room. There was also a sign on the phone itself, giving instructions on how to do so. I was very frustrated when I followed these instructions but was unable to make an important call. Eventually there was a response to a call to reception and I was told that the rooms do not have access to external phone lines. 6. Items were removed items from my room prior to my departure, while I was out, including perishable food items which were purchased as a gift for friends and I had stored in the fridge in my room. When I attended reception, I found they had placed them on the floor in reception, not in a refrigerator and two beautiful strudels which should have been kept flat were standing on end against the wall. This resulted in them being unsuitable for their intended use. 7. It is easy for one to gain the impression that this place was built cheaply and standards suffered accordingly. There is just enough room between where the bathroom door opens and the hand basin and a stopper stops it from actually hitting the toilet. One has to reach through hot water to adjust the temperature when having a shower which is dangerous. Cheap framed prints are secured to the walls with big ugly screws. 8. There were no plates or bowls in the room, only two glasses and cheap old cups and saucers - even the two teaspoons look like "op-shop" rejects. All very ordinary. Each of these things may not seem major when considered individually, but when they are viewed collectively, they certainly leave one very disillusioned and disappointed. It's a great pity I didn't have a camera! I strongly suggest you inspect the rooms and check things are working properly and to your liking before booking in, as your hosts charming façade soon disappears at the slightest polite suggestion of criticism. If you are the next person to stay there, please take some photos and post them on line - and certainly do let us know if things have improved! I certify that this review is based on my own experience and is my genuine opinion of this hotel, and that I have no personal or business relationship with this establishment, and have not been offered any incentive or payment originating from any person or establishment to write this review.

Was not deterred however because we were all starving after touring from Melbourne. When the steak came it looked like something Coles puts their reduced sticker to and sure enough its taste and texture was supermarket budget steak at best. To be fair, the other meals were all fine but after paying almost $30 i decided to complain. Wooly haired bloke took over from other staff who were handling my complaint. He insisted he eats the steak all the time and its fine so not sure what my problem is? Wow... so i said i'll skip dinner then but he insisted he will not be returning the money for the meal as there was nothing wrong with the steak. In fact it comes from his farm! Oh and its his pub too and that's that... If you like the sound of that kind of customer service eat here. If not give this place a miss and try the alternatives...

Feeling tired, I chose the specials for the day - corned beef and rice pudding. Often in the Wimmera and Mallee, one finds pub kitchens churn out Corned Beef which is tough, stringy and bland. Therefore, as I waited for my meal, I was not expecting anything too inspiring. One mouthful revealed that I was about to consume Corned Beef as it SHOULD be cooked. It was absolutely delicious. The local organic meat was tender and had been given a full flavour by being cooked to a very good traditional recipe - one my grandmother would be proud of... The mashed potatoes were smooth and plentiful and rather than cabbage, were served with al-dente steamed vegetables. The rice pudding included marinated raisins and really met the description of being "comfort food". Yummo! What a very pleasant surprise it was to find that The Maldon Hotel has a chef who really cares about the food he is presenting!
