Hidden gem alert!…read more My pilgrimage to "Not Your Average Quilter" started with a recommendation from a quilting friend's husband (thank you, Ken N!). I added it to my mental rolodex, bookmarked it on Yelp, and made a note to go visit. Then I heard one of my favorite quilters (the Quilting Cowboy) was shipping a new line - and the only place close to me that had it was NYAQ! I reached out to them via FB messenger and learned that they had 3 bolts of the new "Leaf" line - and then I convinced the hubs to take a road trip with me. Thank GOODNESS for pictures on Yelp, as the map directions had us WAY out of the way. I spotted the "Art Ovation" sign, pointed, and yelled, "There it is!" as we passed it. Hubs pulled a turn around, and we were there. Parking is in the back and we entered at the front in to a little spot noting "Quilt Shop Gifts". We were greeted by THE NICEST lady behind a little counter, and it was obvious that this was the place for locals to be. It was like Cheers for quilters. Others from out of town or out of state entered while we were there, too! SO fun! Back to my quest. So when we asked about the Leaf line, the lovely lady helper walked us to the back to get help from the owner. Let me tell you - Michael was awesome in every sense of the word. Not only was he running things in the back (making color guard flags/uniforms, cutting fabrics), but he also MADE all of the beautiful art quilts that adorn the walls! I was floored to learn he quilted them all on his small domestic machine (he showed us!). WOW. We chatted Michael up a little bit - trying not to distract him from the very busy happenings in the back of the store. Long story short, I am in love with Michael and this business and will come back to support him as much as my quilting budget will allow. For the modern quilters, he carries Tula and Kaffe in yardage and pre-cuts, and the variety of other fabrics is noteworthy. The notions and quilting themed "gifts" were SO fun and I wanted all of the things. Pro tip - if you tell them you will return, they might just give you a reusable bag that you can bring back with you for 10% off your next purchase... just save some Tula for me!

Despite being held in their back warehouse, everything was clean and organized, and the staff were very helpful in getting my things weighed and loaded in to my vehicle. The "Zero Landfill" event is designed to put materials donated by local area designers, dealerships, businesses, and sales reps in to the hands of crafters, collectors, artists, etc. to upcycle and/or repurpose discontinued or unused samples of various mediums. Offerings included things such as flooring, framing materials, tiles, and all kinds of fabric - all free. At the end, they weigh your haul and tell you how many pounds of materials you saved from the landfill. I am very pleased with my 120 pounds of velvet squares, curtain panels, carpet squares, and various other goodies that I was able to score. Being a curator of textiles, this event was right up my alley. To hear that almost 12,000 pounds of materials were saved from the landfill just at this event was awesome. I cannot wait to make upcycled pillow covers, table cloths, and who knows what else with my new-to-me beauties!

So while I was exploring downtown Lebanon, I found this small quilt shop southwest of the courthouse. Turns out the shop has been around for 40 years though with different owners. The current owner was a customer who bought the business when it was up for sale a few years ago. After parking along the street (free), I noticed the shop had two halves. The part I stepped into was filled with fabric along the walls and in quarters on small display islands. The owner's desk was at the rear. The right half of the shop was filled with a giant quilting machine, one that most people can't find enough room for (or probably afford) in their own homes. I've learned that it is one thing to piece the fabric together and attach a backing (with maybe a pit of padding) to the display side. But the best/most durable quilts have a layer stitching that connects the two layers throughout the spread so that the filling doesn't slide and bunch when used. So it is nice to know that for a fee, you can have your quilt professionally stitched together here. The patterns you select for the stitching can be as beautiful as the fabric. The shop also offers patterns and classes for those who are interested. Though the shop is limited in hours, the owner mentioned she would be expanding the hours in 2020. Review #3475

They immediately responded saying they didn't have the inventory and had cancelled the transaction so no dispute was necessary. I asked why they had said they were shipping Monday, and they answered that they were going to CHECK on Monday, and apologized for not telling me Tuesday that they didn't have the inventory.
