Three, four, five (?) years later, sometimes I feel like I can predict the issues before they come out. The wedding issue, the style issue, the Top 40 under 40 issue, the Stampede issue, the this and the that issue. They have a formula it seems but in my opinion, at least it works. The articles are usually fresh and new as the writer's at Avenue clearly keep up with local trends. They seem to have a pretty good idea of what sells ads in each issue. And they sell a lot of ads. A lot. Of ads. And I'm not judging because I get that to produce a free monthly magazine, something has got to pay the bills. I'm a big fan of businesses that actually cover their operating expenses. My favourite part of the magazine is the very last page, a little diddy they call "The View From Here" where they select photograph's taken by local photographers. I like to see different perspective's of Calgary and I love that they give away a free one year subscription to a magazine that's already free - hey it's the thought that counts.

Chapters / Indigo provides a prime example of hiring policies where incompetents run the show. Simple story and short. I placed an online order. They charged me. Fine. Three weeks later I had to go looking (the online rigamarole) to see whether my book was ready to be picked up. It had been there for two weeks. Did I receive an e-mail notification or even a telephone call? No. When I wrote a note of complaint, they simply cancelled my order. Idiots. One simple transaction, not rocket science. Wouldn't be a big surprise it they go out of business. They've certainly lost mine.

So like most Chapters this one has a Starbucks inside. I do like the tidiness and nice layout here. Its inside Chinook mall so there are plenty of parking inside the parkade and outside. It has almost any book that you are looking for and if they don't have it, you can order it online. Cool. They also have interesting souvenirs too.

I didn't have enough time…read more.. I wandered into Shelf Life Books too close to closing time. As I browsed the shelves, I quickly discovered that I was a special independent bookstore and felt a certainly literary nirvana that I had last experienced at Powell's Books in Portland. The selection was thoughtfully curated and was strong with the Canadian Author force. Around every corner was a new thought-provoking discovery and a desire to linger and explore further. I sold some books a few months ago and I was given one dollar per book. I thought the store would…read moresell them for about five to ten dollars per book. A friend of mine told me that this business is a rip off. I went into check what my books are being sold at. It turns out that two of my books were being sold at twenty and thirty dollars a piece. I felt really ripped off. So much for their business name-what a contradiction Fair's Fair-certainly not!!

Whether you're looking for unique jewellery, statues, home accents, show pieces, incense, or motivational swag, this place is a one-stop shop. The only reason it loses a star is because some of the items are ridiculously overpriced. An OM meditation cushion for $112?!?!? I don't think so! This aside however, one of the more interesting stores I've come across in Calgary.

Located right in Crowfoot, it's accessible via city transit (Crowfoot stop) and there are a SLEW of things to do in the area once you've had your fun here. Whether you want to go for dinner, for movies, for drinks, for dessert, or whether you want to hang out at a pub or a sports bar, this Chapter is conveniently located next to ALL these places, and then some!
