We checked out California Fish Grill on Saturday around 1:45 pm. First off, my expectations weren't very high because I wasn't quite sure what to expect. I was hungry and wanted something lighter for lunch. Walking in, everything was very clean, and we ordered through the self-service kiosk. The process was easy and efficient. I thoroughly enjoyed my Spicy Mayo Tuna Bowl. The ingredients tasted fresh, the food was quality and everything was cooked really well. Kudos to the kitchen. I was pleasantly surprised. I also tried my boyfriend's fish and chips, and they were delicious. The fries were good, but not quite as memorable as the rest of the meal personally I didn't like the drizzle. I've been here a bunch of times. For the most part the service and food are usually good. On my last visit the food and service were horrible. It was a bad day. I Yelped about it and the business owner told me to contact them. I did contact them and nothing happened. So it took me about three months to cool off and we finally returned. There was a manager wiping off the patio tables when we arrived. He seemed very nice and insisted that they run the food out to us instead of my husband picking up the food. I got the grilled salmon salad. It was very nice and well packed with salad. The manager came out and said that he had a new cook on and that I wasn't served enough salmon and bought out another small piece to me. I thought that was nice. My husband ordered the three piece battered fish with rice and beans and also a shrimp skewer. They accidentally gave him fries instead of rice but after the manager was so nice to us he didn't have the heart to tell him that the order came out slightly off. I ordered dynamite shrimp with white rice and the rice wasn't cooked properly. It is uncooked and crunchy. We are big fans of CFG and this location is the one closest to us. I like that they have shrimp options and combos for folks like me who are allergic to fin fish. My husband and I always have great meals here when we come. The service is top-notch and there's always a manager or the like who check on us during our visit. I've eaten here at least 10 or more times with no complaints. But today was different we ordered all our food to go. Got home , opened up the containers, and looked ok! But the fries looked like heat lamp fries. Yucky wilting objects of absolute infamy! But the worst was the two pieces of FRIED FISH! Some parts of the fish had a nice brown color but other parts of both fillets were that burnt color with that obvious unsatisfying awful-awful taste! Why? Reason #1. The night crew did not filter or replace that day's frying oil (blame should go to the shift supervisor for letting this happen. #2. You let an uncaring, unsupervised cook fry the fish incorrectly (blame should go to both the useless fry cook and the shift or front of house supervisor who should be eyeballing every meal prior to giving it to the customer. #3. I noticed this was a different crew I've never seen before. But lots of LOUD bullshit talking and facial expressions between front of house staff and the kitchen staff. LOOKED like they were enjoying their tête-à-tête---In other words no one's taking care of business! The burnt sides of fish are on the bottom side... If you're doing the final check for fried fish--get a clean fork and left up so you can check the bottom. From now on if it's takeout I'll check my fried fish before accepting. We had a great experience at CFG Centennial Hills today thanks to the amazing Kayvon (manager) About 5 months ago, we had our inaugural CFG visit at the Palm Desert CA location. Things did not go well so the CFG CA & AZ regional manager contacted us offering to make it right. He agreed to give us a gift certificate to this location so we can use it during our May Vegas trip. I tried to contact him to remind him several days ago but he did not respond. I called and got the runaround but was finally told he was no longer with CFG. I called this location and spoke to Kayvon. Rather than making me jump through more hoops, he simply said "come on in and I will honor what was promised". How refreshing! When we arrived, Kayvon immediately helped us order some food and offered suggestions. I got the sea bass, brown rice and roasted corn. Hubby went with the catfish, zucchini and rice. The restaurant was clean and the food was done promptly. We both enjoyed our meals - all ingredients were fresh and cooked perfectly. Kayvon checked on us which we appreciated. All the sides (Brussels sprouts, kaleslaw, sweet potato fries, and French fries) were very well prepared and seasoned. We got a pineapple cream soda which was excellent and refreshing. Considering the portion sizes and quality, their prices were really good.
