Writing this review while seated in the restaurant waiting for our food on Mother's Day. We had a reservation set for 11 for six people. When we arrived, the hostess notified us that they were accepting walk ups and reservations didn't matter. We waited over an hour to be seated. Initially, they sat us separately at two booths. This is unacceptable on Mother's Day when we were trying to celebrate our Grandmother. Thankfully, our waiter was able to clear a spot on the patio. Following being seated, the waiter did not come. I got up and asked if they could come to our table because we have two diabetic family members. The host I spoke with said he would send someone, but there was some attitude. Our waiter came and was kind, but the whole experience has been awful. We waited over an hour and twenty five minutes after being seated for our food to arrive, and they didn't bring it all out at once. My pancakes ended up having a hair in them and had to be sent back. We have since asked for a manager to come to the table 2x, and they have not come. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. It has ruined our last Mother's Day with our grandmother before she moves away later this year. Over two hours wasted total waiting to be seated and for our food to arrive. read more

Was here for the first time at a sponsored meeting/lunch hosted by one of the insurance companies I represent. I suppose they consider themselves a sort of fast-casual restaurant. At 11:00am it wasn't too busy and we were in the patio area, but I definitely wasn't impressed by the service . . . or the prices (even though I wasn't paying). The menu is fairly extensive, but I didn't see anything for lunch on it for less than $14-$19, and many of the items were more than $25. I ordered a Southwestern BBQ Chicken Salad at $19.99. The current menu is more limited than what is posted here on Yelp! as the "full menu" and the prices are higher. The salad itself was decent with very fresh greens, but "BBQ Chicken" is merely three deep-fried chicken tenders (about 2.5 ounces each), slathered with way too much of a gooey, overly sweet, barbeque sauce -- a little tangy but unremarkable otherwise (don't know if I could have asked for grill chicken breast as a substitute). The "balsamic vinagrette" was thick and far too much was provided -- a waste of salad dressing (I only needed 1/3 of the 3 ounce cup). However, it took three asks and over 10 minutes to get a silverware set-up after the salad was delivered. As a result, the chicken tenders were completely cold by the time I was able to eat them with the knife and fork -- I only ate one and took the two others home. Never was asked how the meal was and never got a refill on my 16-ounce glass of water either. I don't mind driving 10-30 miles or farther for a nice breakfast, lunch, or dinner, but there's nothing particularly attractive about California Grill & Bar to incentivize a return, even on someone else's dime. Overall, pretty poor performance by the waitstaff. A couple of others had sandwiches that looked pretty good. 3-1/2 stars would be more accurate than either 3 or 4 for a one-and-done dining experience. read more

Being my first time here I asked for suggestions from the waitress and when she mentioned chicken fried steak I was sold. Food was amazing. The gravy was hearty and super flavorful. The chicken fried steak was cooked perfectly. It was crispy on the outside and juicy inside. Eggs were properly sunny side up and the hash browns with salsa was super delicious. Updated Review (2025) We came here as a big group (15+ people), and I was genuinely impressed by how well our one server handled everything- super patient and treated everyone with the same attention and kindness. I'm picky about French fries, and theirs were really good- crispy, seasoned just right. I also loved the surprise touch of fresh fruit with my meal. It wasn't something I expected, but it added a nice balance to the plate. Definitely one of those places I wish we had closer to home. Whenever I'm back in the area, I'd come again. P.S. Don't skip the buffalo sauce and ranch- they're fire! Just adding a note that this review is from several years ago (pre-remolded). I haven't been back since, so this reflects what it was like then. I would've never have eaten here if it wasn't for Yelp! This restaurant was at many yelp events and one time they served their Tequila jalapeño pasta, which is AMAZING! Especially with their garlic cheese bread! I've also had the Smokey mountain high sandwich with avocado, cheddar cheese, mayo & mustard on garlic cheese sourdough bread. It's super delicious! California Grill has a retro vibe with modern renovations which is really cool. The food there is on par with a really good traditional Americana vibe. However, they do have other options like fajitas or jambalaya that looked good. The service is absolutely fantastic and is the reason I'm giving them a five star review. I got the turkey club with fried zucchini. It was delicious, they use this rosemary bread that takes it to the next level. Everything else at this restaurant is great. AMBIANCE-- 3/10 Honestly it is modern but what really left a bad impression was the photo mirror in the front of the restaurant. Any time anyone took a photo, the flash would light up the whole room. While we were there kids were taking photos which is fine but it did bother me throughout my whole meal. Im in the LA area for work and tried CA Grill since its walking distance from my hotel. I had Cesar side salad and the Turkey club sandwich, 4 hours later I was vomiting and diarrhea for hours, with headache, dizziness, chills, etc. Diagnosis was food poisoning and I'm currently recovering slowly . I thought the establishment was very nice but be aware please and my strong suggestion is to make sure all food is washed properly and all hands are clean or use gloves when handling/cooking food. read more

I have been wanting to visit California Grill & Bar for a year now. I was at an event December 2022, and they were serving their Tequila Jalapeno Pasta in small cups. This was one of the few vendors that left a lasting impression on me. It took me a year to come visit them because I live in Santa Clarita and it's about an hour drive to make it to Whittier. I brought my husband with me and he got the hangover burger, and let's just say he loved it. My pasta was just as yummy as I remembered. We got here in the afternoon on a Sunday and there was plenty of parking and we were seated immediately. The restaurant was pretty busy with lots of families. The bar also seemed a little busy, but there were still seats available. I hope to be back soon! read more

Made it out for a nice lunch after a bit of a hiatus. Love the clean updated look of the restaurant. However, it still provides a comfy home-y vibe, and I'm glad they've kept the smaller fish tank around (toddler fave!) As always, the calamari did not disappoint. On a morning in August 2025, my husband and I decided to begin our weekend with breakfast at this restaurant. When we arrived, we were asked if we wanted to wait for a booth or sit at a table. We decided to sit at a table. The place was not extremely crowded; we were seated in an area where there were three empty tables. We were not told that someone would come to take our order and we weren't asked if we wanted anything to drink as we waited. Within minutes of us being seated, the table to our right was being seated with a few people. Their server asked them if they wanted anything to drink. She left to get their drinks and when she returned, she proceeded to take their orders. The table to our left had a larger group seated, drinks were given to them and their orders were taken. Neither of the servers asked if our order had been taken. After 13 minutes of not being served, we decided to leave. We are people of color. A white couple who sat nearby observed everything; as we were leaving, they questioned us saying, "They didn't serve you?" I nodded a No reply. Before we left, my husband asked to speak to the manager. The manager wanted to know where we were sitting. My husband showed him where we were sitting; he reiterated how the two other tables received service. The white couple who had noticed us spoke up and said "yes, we saw everything they were not served". The manager only said," well if you have a seat, I will serve you now." He did not apologize for what had happened, he didn't say he would speak to the servers. Be advised of this potentially happening, if you are a person of color and visiting this establishment. read more
