This persisted throughout the service whenever music was played. One should not have to subject oneself to permanent hearing loss when going to church. It lifted my spirit. What a warm place for me to be. St. Matt's is a beautiful church. I was drawn to the music, for sure. I always sat close to the musicians. And there, also, especially when the sun was shining, a white cross appeared in one section of the stained glass that I was facing. I was touched. St. Matt's, however, was a place of contrasts/contradiction for me. Although there were many friendly parishioners, a woman's place in the service, in "leadership", was defined by men. Perhaps it was a generational thing and after all of these years, things have really changed. Healing services were appreciated when I was first introduced to them, but they soon became too influenced by the judgments of men. It seemed to me that women of advanced educational standing and experience were considered a threat, to males and females. Divorced women, although "welcomed into the fold" were slighted. An inscribed gift that I had given to the church library in thanks for kindnesses shown had disappeared completely and had "never been a part of the inventory." A place of contradiction, in my mind...One day I will return. I long to feel the presence, especially when that small white cross is shining in the stained glass.

They are going for a more inclusive name that people would be drawn to. The church is one of those mega churches. Has a cafeteria, coffee shop, bookstore, multiple children areas, a gym, and chapel and huge sanctuary where they put on almost Broadway level productions free to the public to spread the word about God. They have some of the friendliest people there. From the greeters to members to staff everyone just has a pleasant spirit and makes you feel welcomed. I don't know what there ordinary services are like but their Christmas and Easter productions are spectacular, have been going for years.

They are completely dogma free, non-judgemental and welcoming of everyone. They celebrate diversity and different ways of thinking. One size does not fit all. If that's what you are looking for this might be your place. They seek to support your spiritual growth and wellbeing while also being active in social justice issues. As a bonus the pastor gives the most amazing and uplifting sermons I have ever heard. They are thoughtful and thought provoking. I leave each week truly lifted up. I like to come early and leave late to experience the talented organist, the choir is professional quality, and on holidays they bring on a chamber brass ensemble. The one negative is the scary central hanging Jesus, with abstract accentuated crown of thorns and stigmata, it's not a friendly Jesus.
