When you stroll through the streets of Northampton there is no telling what you'll see. In our…read morecase, one of the first things that caught our eye was this adorable statue of a reclining frog. It was stretched out over a concrete vault that held a coin slot, silently soliciting donations from passers-by to feed the homeless. The coin slot is cut into a door to the vault. The side of the vault has a brochure holder with information on homeless services and how to make a donation. The vault also has two bronze plaques. The one on the front states: "Feed the Frog Feed the Hungry" "All donations made to the "Happy Frog" bank will go directly to feeding the hungry of our community because Northampton cares." A plaque on the side acknowledges the frog's sculptor: "In gratitude to Lu Stubbs, Sculptor -2008-" What a perfect combination of creativity, art, community service, and charity, Yes, Northampton does care.

The Soldiers and Sailors Monument consists of two spectacular bronze sculptures that stand on the…read morefront steps at the entrance of Memorial Hall. As you stand in front of the building and face the front door, a sculpture of a sailor stands to the right of the door and a sculpture of a soldier stands to the left. Memorial Hall was built in 1872 to honor the memory of the 90 Northampton residents who perished during the Civil War. The building has served as a library and museum over the years. The soldier and sailor are dressed in period uniform. The soldier holds his rifle vertically and the sailor holds a telescope in his right hand. It's a very cool monument -you get the feeling that the soldier and sailor are standing guard outside of the building -ever vigilant and ever dutiful.

Growing up in NYC, I often heard about the "Pulaski Skyway" on the traffic reports. It's a bridge…read moreconnecting Newark to Jersey City. Yesterday in Northampton, I came across a monument that honors that bridge's namesake, none other than Revolutionary War Brigadier General Casimir Pulaski. In 1745, he was born into an upper class family in Poland, fought the Russians in Europe and then came to America and served in the Continental army under George Washington. He organized a light infantry division that was known as the Pulaski Cavalry. This earned him a lasting legacy as "the father of the American cavalry". He was fatally wounded during the siege of Savannah on October 11, 1779 and was awarded honorary United States citizenship. The granite Pulaski monument is located in Pulaski Park, next to the City Hall. It has a bust of General Pulaski engraved into the top of the monument. The inscription reads: To perpetuate The memory of Brigadier General Casimir Pulaski An American Revolutionary War Hero Who, from wounds received at the siege of Savannah Georgia, died on October eleventh 1779. -------- This memorial is erected in testimony of respect by his fellow Polish-American citizens of Northampton, Mass. This is a very understated monument located between the street and the front entrance of Memorial…read moreHall. It consists of two sets of triple-fold granite panels. Both sets have a large center panel that is flanked by two smaller panels. Both of the large center panels bears the inscription "Northampton Remembers" followed by the names of Northampton's WW II vets. The remaining four panels bear the names of Northampton's vets that served in the Spanish American War, WW I, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Above the phrase "Northampton remembers are the logos of the service branches, reading from left to right, they are the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Marines, U.S Air Force, U.S. Coast Guard, and the U.S. Merchant Marine. The monument halves are located on the brick patio entrance to Memorial Hall. The bricks are installed in a parquet design and are of two colors, black and the traditional brick color. There is a flagpole centered between the monument halves.
