Gayle and I spent a week in Camarones as part of our Earthwatch Expedition (Trailing Penguins in Patagonia). The Cape Dos Bahías preserve which features a 9000 pair penguin colony was only 30 km away, and an easy daily commute for our work. The town site itself is a 3 hour drive south of Trelew. Camarones is on the coast, and was a bit sleepy. Town history goes back to the landing of Don Simon de Alcazaba in 1545, Gayle and I walked around every day and sometimes there seemed to be more community dogs than people. The construction was also interesting, as a combination of money availability and inflation resulted in many structures in various degrees of completion. Usually, a Direct TV disk was a sure sign that the building was habitable. We were there just before the summer and the fishing season kicked in. That meant a lot of quiet, except for a community festival that rocked the town during our last night there. As far a sight seeing, the Juan Peron Family Museum was a pleasant visit, as was San Martin Plaza, and just being able to wander around a well spread out town. The big payoff was being on the ocean and experiencing some pretty amazing sunrises and pleasant empty beach walks. It was warm enough to swim in December, and we shouldn't have passed on that experience. read more
