Beautiful, "old world" setting, with open window views upstairs in good weather. This place is fancy without being stuffy. You'll receive a menu, but your daily choices are also written up on chalkboards on the wall. There's something here for everyone, from the serious carnivore to the reluctant vegetarian. Tragically, we had already grabbed a quick lunch before being invited by clients to dine here, but that didn't stop me or my co-worker from SALIVATING over every morsel of food brought out to our two hosts. We shared a wonderful cold meat and veggie platter and empanadas for appetizers, then watched jealously as they devoured two beautifully presented, perfectly cooked sizzling cuts of juicy steak. I had a mushroom soup and we also shared an unusual potato dish (a potato chip bowl with puffed potato chips, surrounded by potato sticks). (Un)fortunately, everyone was too stuffed for dessert, but judging by what we saw at other tables, they're masterpieces of culinary delight as well. Our waiter was attentive, professional, and paced the meal appropriately. We went on a Monday evening, so the restaurant was relatively quiet, which added to the relaxed atmosphere. The only drawback was that they did not have their traditional Argentine roasted beef ribs available that night. If I were to return, I would aim for an earlier seating or a weekend visit to increase the likelihood of getting the ribs, which appear to be one of their signature offerings. Overall, this was a very enjoyable experience. The food was excellent, the service strong, and the setting more quiet, rustic, and subdued compared with places like La Buena Brra. Our teenage kids enjoyed both experiences, despite how different they were. Highly recommended if you are looking for a solid Argentine steakhouse experience while in Mexico City.

When they brought back the same piece of meat, it was overcooked and dry. So not only did they serve raw food, but they handled the subsequent situation terribly. They didn't even offer to remove the lechón from the bill, nor to offer a discount. My girlfriend's Milanesa was gross and rubbery. I am from Argentina and can tell you that this place is nothing like Argentine asado.

"Silly Europeans!" my Mexican friends said laughingly, "... you don't need a reservation!". And right they were. The place was practically empty on a Wednesday night 8 pm. Lucky for us, cause it meant we were attended to promptly. The waitress was funny and helpful and explained everything we wanted to know about the things on the menu. The empanadas we ordered as appetizers were big and flavorful. Enough to satisfy me on a night when I wouldn't be terribly hungry. Soon after that the meat arrived. Again, huge portions of meat with sides of fries or salad. Mine was tasty, although overcooked and not 'rare' like I ordered it. One of my friends seemed to be eating mainly fat, as half of his cut was fat and therefore inedible. Pity. None of us could finish our main meals, by the way. So they offered kindly to wrap them up to take home. But as any human being knows, there's always room for dessert! Cue the - I bet you already guessed it - HUGE piece of chocolate pie. Split four ways to compensate for its dietary damage, but still we weren't able to finish it. It was definitely delicious though (chocolate with dulce de leche). But I think that's what my main beef is with this place: the insane portions. I'm just not such a big eater, so that might be part of it, but normally I have no problem finishing a meal. Mainly though: should you aim for quality or quantity? Personally, I'd think quality. Here at Don Asado I feel like they aim for more of a middle way. The quality isn't bad, but the quantity is too much. Compensate a little on the sizes of the meals, and I think you could gain a little more quality for the same price. If so, I'd definitely come back for some more of that divine chocolate cake.
