We went for repair to binoculars that we had purchased elsewhere. An eyecup was damaged and I had been sent replacement by the manufacturer, but I could not figure how to install. The manufacturer knew and recommended Cambrian Photography as best optics repair/service in our area. We were seen immediately when we arrived for our booked appointment. The repairman had a look and confirmed we had been sent the wrong eyecups. He then proceeded to repair the damaged eyecup while we waited. It was excellent customer service and experience, and we are so glad to have our binoculars working again. read more

It's not everyday you decide to purchase a second hand camera. However, when doing so, I decided to choose a photography shop that I have used on a more one to one basis. I purchased a Fujifilm XPro1 Camera that came with one seemingly third party battery, and boxed. It didn't contain the Hähnel Universal Charger as advertised, so I posted a message to them and opened up a case against them through Ebay. One of their staff decided to hand deliver the charger, which I thought "Yeah sure, go the extra mile." However the charger does not work at all with the battery, and now I am seriously pissed off. Sadly, the whole experience has left me unsure about using such a shop, as I have stated I have experienced better using Calumet, or even Wex Photo/Video. I am all in favour of using high street stores to purchase items, and even online shopping. Though this experience has once again pushed me further into analogue photography, where upon I don't have to worry about charging said item in order to operate it. read more

This place got me into photography. I bought a simple SLR and as I started getting better I discovered that this shop was a little treasure trove of camera bits and pieces for just about every make. One of the best bits here is the fact that they have a very well stocked second hand section which is mainly full of lenses for SLRs. The prices are very good and many of the second hand items come complete in their original boxes with all instructions. They also run some good training courses for every level of experience. read more

This is an interesting little camera shop. well its not that little, but its an independent place. I like taking pictures and most the cameras are quite out of my league in terms of understanding what they do. The place sell lots of big lenses and things like that. They sell amature telescopes. the second hand gear is all of good quality and the price is pretty competetive. you can find retro cameras sometimes too, which are hard to find somewhere like argos. this place has that added touch of authenticity that you don't get in the corporate styled jessops etc. read more

You really can't beat the face-to-face interaction with a knowledgeable person which is so lacking in today's online-obsessed climate. You will find this here at Cambrian Photography, along with a great selection of everything you could possibly want. The part-exchange rates are favourable compared to the big-chains too. As a novice in photography, I found the staff to be friendly, patient and willing to share not only their thorough product knowledge but also advice on some exposure settings I've been having problems with. What more can you ask for? read more

History
Established in 1946.
The story of Cambrian Photography is the story of its founder Dick Duncalf. He started as a photographer in Conwy in 1945. "We made a good business taking pictures of tourists by the Castle and The Smallest House" he recalls with fond memories. "Even then we used to have the prints ready in an hour" "There was no film or paper available in shops so we used bulk film and paper from the Air Force - 35mm from the gun cameras and 1000ft waterproof paper cut down to 9 3/8 inches (an early version of resin coated papers)." "Because there was such a shortage of films and papers available we started to sell the ex Air Force stock in the shop. Pretty soon the tail started to wag the dog!" After a time working in Tywyn Meirionydd, as the official photographer of the Western Command he left the Army in 1962 and returned to the shop as the photographer. By then trade had increased and the shop was at its present site in Colwyn Bay.

A few years ago I called at the shop when staying in Chester. Having seen adverts for some of their secondhand stock in AP, I wondered if they might have a pre-AI 105mm f2.5 lens to fit my ancient Nikon F. The young man behind the counter was unfamiliar with this type of equipment but, to his credit, had a good look round. Eventually, he appeared with a filthy Nikon F body fitted with the very lens I sought. A quick check revealed lens to be OK but shutter speeds on the body not working below 8th second. Asked how much for the pair. He disappeared then came back with a very pleasant chap who enquired if £100 would be OK? I had seen 105s for that in other adverts and plus carriage at that. Deal done and a trip to a nearby cafe to get my hanky out. Curiosity made me go to Boots for a pair of 625 cells not imagining for a moment that the metering head would work. Blow me it did. Still using it today having taken it abroad in all weather conditions. Bash a mugger in the chops with it and it will still carry on taking pics! The shutter? just needed a bit of firing to get it working AOK again. Nikon F's do deserve their reputation for longevity. This one was made 1961. read more

I have got quite a few bits from Cambrian Photography in recent months including an EOS 5D mk3, Ring flash, lenses and a bag, I have absolutely nothing but praise for the service and trust they have shown to me and a very good friend who also is a regular customer. They match prices as far as possible for an independant retailer, and always give me unbiased advice and reccomendations on a product that suits my needs rather than their profit margins, which I feel is important. I can not reccomend this shop and its informed and capable staff enough, supporting these independant retailers is essential to maintain an option in the market place rather than the impersonal online or chain stores etc. Keep up the great effort you have consistantly supplied to me in the past.and I look forward to expanding my range of gear through you. read more

For sheer all embracing know how this place would take some beating! The range of stock, for a small (?) independent retailer is quite astounding. Add to this the benefit of friendly consultation and advice, not always aimed at maximizing profit, and you have the type of photoshop, once to be found regularly, but now rapidly disappearing. Treasure it whilst you can read more

The staff are very friendly, and are very knowledgeable, the only problem is that the owners pay the staff minimum wages for their staffs experience and their staff missing their lunches (yes I was shocked when I heard this) in the photographic industry so off days may be expected. read more
