Absolutely amazing customer service with this company. I brought in a 108 year old banged up typewriter a while back. Tom was skeptical at first sight, but I had no immediate timetable with the machine. So they had a lot of time to work on it. And damn did they do an incredible job. Beyond cleaning it up wonderfully, Sarah sat me down and gave me a Typewriter 101. I didn't ask her to, but I think she could tell I needed it. I visited CTC a couple weeks ago looking for a starter typewriter. I'm one of those clueless millennials, and I had never really used a typewriter before! There are good deals online for used typewriters, but I really wanted to see and FEEL the typewriters in person, especially since I'd never never owned one before. The owner was so helpful, and so nice. He took out a few models, let me type on them, and explained how they each worked. The store was slammed with a backlog of repairs, and he still treated me with kindness and patience. I wasn't dead set on buying something that day, but I saw a 1948 Royal Quiet De Luxe and loved it immediately. It cost a few bucks more than the others I tested, but it was beautiful and I was so happy with my experience at the shop, so I pulled the trigger and went a few dollars over my planned budget. Worth every penny. I've been typing on it every day since! If I could write this review on my typewriter, god help me I would. I'd happily recommend this store to anyone needing repairs or sales. read more

The owner of this fun and unique little shop is extremely knowlegeable and helpful. I had bought a 1930s typewriter from a seller online and it really took a beating in transit, it arrived badly damaged. Cambridge Typewriter was able to work a miracle and it is typing like a brand-new machine now. Not only that, but he cleaned and polished it, the transformation is amazing- this thing is gleaming. I had had my eye on Cambridge Typewriter Co for a while, and while walking past this Friday, I was bummed to see they were closed (for the holiday). HOWEVER, the lovely associate inside let us in and gave us a tour of the very small but packed shop. During our visit, we saw a 100-year old typewriter waiting for repairs, a typewriter belonging to David McCullough (!!), one belonging to Nobel Prize winning poet, a typewriter with keys in Hebrew. And I finally saw an Olivetti Valentine typewriter. If you're a typewriter geek or just love a bit of history, check this store out. read more

I've recently gotten into typewriters and knew I had to check out Cambridge Typewriter to really get myself acquainted. What a truly awesome shop Tom has built. Its packed wall to wall with beautiful vintage and antique machines, some for sale at super reasonable prices ($200 to $250) and others that are there for his thriving repair business. I didn't come in to buy anything, just to look around, and Tom couldn't have been more friendly and welcoming to my friend and me. He was happy just to talk shop and answer my questions about his business. Overall I had a really wonderful visit, and was very impressed with Tom and his operation. This place is a treasure. My IBM Selectric has been on the fritz for years and on a lark I checked to see if there were still people around who work on these. When I walked in I could hardly believe my eyes! There were so many old machines in there getting fixed or on display. What a trove. I just typed my first letter on my Selectric and it works like a brand new machine. I work on a computer all the time and do much writing but there is nothing like using a real typewriter. You write very differently - more thoughtfully and with better humor. What are we going to do when there are no more places like this?! read more

Tom is the best. He has repaired my typewriters for at least 20 years. The quality of his work is impeccable (he always diagnoses the problem correctly and fixes my machine right the first time), his prices are more than reasonable, and his service impeccable. Tom the owner, his brother-in-law and their apprentice couldn't have been nicer to two young people in my life - a girl 11 and a boy 14. They each came away with a lovely, fairly priced restored typewriter - a 1960's Olympia and a 1948 Smith Corona Clipper. The Type Team spent a long and gently informative time with each young person. They were thrilled by the beautiful, interesting machines and the interested people who lovingly fixed them and sold them. This place is out of some dream movie I never actually saw but wish I had. read more

Cambridge Typewriter Company is indeed an extraordinarily warm and human place. The owner Tom sets a high standard in such a relaxed and easy manner. You just know he loves what he does--and would that more of the world was like his shop. I took my 8 year old grandson there (along with his aunt) to show him the unique world of the manual typewriter. We spent a memorable hour that delighted all of us and Tom never once seemed the least bit impatient. I bought a typewriter at a yard sale. After loading a new ribbon and typing a letter, I found that the text on the left of the left side of the page was fine. But as the text appeared on the right side of the page, only the top half of each letter was clear. The bottom half was not being typed. I looked online to attempt troubleshooting, but am not experienced enough with typewriters to feel confident enough to DIY. I emailed a sample to the owner and he said it looked like the typewriter had been damaged. I brought it in-- his initial diagnosis was correct. It took him less than 5 min to repair and he didn't charge me, since no new parts were needed. The entire transaction from initial email contact to meeting him in person was great. He clearly knows his stuff and is friendly and reasonable/fair. Worth a visit and highly recommended! I went on a Saturday early afternoon and there was plenty of free street parking available. read more

I brought my type writer in he--Tom--told me that the type writer would be ready in no more than a week because the type writer was in good condition. He said it would probably be ready before that. I was very excited. A week went by then two weeks I decided to call him. He told me that it was not ready yet because he had a lot of machines coming in--I kind of thought that it should be first in first out but call me crazy--he asked me if I needed it now. I advised him that I had already given him an extra week. Considering there was nothing wrong with the machine except that one key that was sticking should have been more than enough time--I did not say this--. He then proceeded to try and make me feel bad by telling me that he would have to work all day on it--please flash back to the machine being in good condition-- I said nothing. When his sob story got no response he said OK you can pick it up tomorrow. I arrived at the shop, picked up my machine and paid 75 dollars for the service. I got home and sat down to write. I cannot tell you how disappointed I was to find out that that some of the keys felt heavier then others and one of the keys was till sticking. I have now found a guide on how to clean and oil my machine and plan to do it myself. I don't mind paying money for good service, but throwing away $75 dollars and bring home a typewriter with sticky keys? Unacceptable. read more
