Things get even worse during summer months, when all hell breaks loose; it gets so packed, so desorganized, cashiers get so slow, that a simple visit to buy a loaf of bread can take several hours. Home of the slowest "fast checkout lane" in the world. If you have a car and patience, I would recommend driving to Angeloni at 4th Avenue.
