Accessible via train and Taxi or bus. The train is located about a few minutes walk behind the church. We were able to visit this Basilica 3x. For the Jubilee Year 2025, 2x. This Basilica is very huge and has paintings of all the Popes and the apostles. A must see Basilica! It also houses St. Paul the apostle's tomb where his remains lie. It also has the Holy Chains - in a reliquary, which bound St. Paul. On our 2nd visit to Rome, it was still covid time and this I consider by far probably the less crowded of the Basilicas. They have a museum which you give a donation of 1euro to explore. I also find their gift shop the biggest and have the most choices of religious souvenirs. Their cafe is also loaded with gelato and variety of snack items. Definitely a must see when in Rome. January 2026

My hubby and I visited during our 1st trip to Rome (on September 30, 2023) while celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary (yep, love was in the air! ;) I came across this basilica when researching attractions located near/around the Airbnb that we were staying at in the Ostiense neighborhood and after reading about it, I just had to add it to our Rome itinerary. See the many pics and videos included w/ this review from our visit on 09/30/2023 -- just know that despite my best efforts, they don't fully capture just how beautiful and impressive this basilica is in person. And these pics & videos definitely couldn't capture what I felt when I 1st walked inside and saw the beautiful, gold ceiling that looked like it was glowing! (Brief History) This basilica was built above the tomb of St. Paul in Rome and is one of the 4 major basilicas of Rome. It was consecrated AD 4th century. It's also the 2nd largest church in the Italian capital after St. Peter's. Located inside is the sarcophagus of St. Paul. (Special-ness Specs) -- Gallery of The Popes -- (see the pics & videos included w/ this review) Inside the basilica there are 5 rooms w/ the central one having 80 granite and marble columns and there you will see the portraits of every past pope since St. Peter -- 266 total (awesome display) -- Doors at St. Peter's -- (see pics & videos) 1. The Holy Door - one of the four holy doors is located here, holy doors are only opened every 25 yrs during Jubilee (2025 is the next Jubilee in Rome) 2. The Byzantine Door--the door dates back to the 11th century has 54 panels 3. Outdoor courtyard w/ the beautiful St. Paul monument (Additional helpful info) -- Free to visit but bring some cash so you can leave an offering -- There is a dress code - no knees, stomach, or shoulders can be shown. During our visit there were plastic, disposable shawls at the front door once you entered into the basilica that visitors were asked to use if they were wearing shorts that had their knees showing or if they had on a sleeveless top on. -- not as crowded/busy as St. Peter's basilica so you're able to take your time during your visit Rome has so many beautiful and historic basilica's and during our time in Rome, we did get to experience so many of them and yes, while each of them were special in their own way, the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside The Walls was my favorite and I'm so very grateful that I was able to experience such historic beauty. You can spend hours wandering among these awesome ruins, which is a great way to spend the afternoon - and they really are amazing. Pictures don't do them justice. I'd suggest getting the self-guided audio tour. It's a smartphone with preloaded audio about all of the parts of the baths. It's a little quiet, but certainly not a dealbreaker. You do need to leave something like an ID so they know they'll get their smartphone back, but it's worth the few Euros you'll pay. The things you'll learn are fascinating. Overall, this has been one of my favorite spots in Rome. I'd recommend this to anyone looking for something a little more unique and quiet when compared to the other main attractions.

This past summer was my third time visiting the Trevi Fountain, and somehow, each visit has felt…read morecompletely different. There's something special about returning to a place you've seen before and realizing that the experience changes as you do. The first time I visited more than 10 years ago, we were young, inexperienced travelers and, like most tourists, we made sure to participate in the famous tradition of throwing a coin into the fountain. According to legend, throwing one coin over your left shoulder with your right hand means you'll return to Rome someday. Two coins are said to bring love, while three can mean marriage. Whether you believe the lore or not, it's one of those fun little traditions that makes visiting the Trevi Fountain feel like part of the experience. The fountain itself dates back to the 18th century and was designed by Nicola Salvi. It was completed in 1762 and is built at the endpoint of one of ancient Rome's aqueducts, the Aqua Virgo, which has supplied water to the city for more than 2,000 years. The centerpiece is Neptune, the god of the sea, surrounded by dramatic sculptures of horses, tritons and other figures. It's an incredibly impressive piece of Baroque architecture, especially when you take a moment to look beyond the crowds and really appreciate the details. On our most recent trip, though, things had changed quite a bit. There are now gates surrounding the fountain, and during designated times of the day, visitors are charged a small fee to get down into the immediate area around the fountain. If you'd rather not pay, you can plan your visit before or after those hours. One tip: I highly recommend going about 30 minutes before they begin charging. They start closing off the gates shortly beforehand, and if you're already down by the fountain, you'll notice the crowds gradually thinning as the time gets closer. If you're lucky, you might even get a few magical minutes where it feels like you have the fountain almost entirely to yourself. It's only temporary, but it's pretty amazing. That's exactly what we did on this trip with our whole family, and it worked out perfectly. We had a few quiet moments to take photos, take in the fountain and enjoy the experience without the usual sea of people around us. And yes, we still threw our coins in. It's just a fun tradition, whether you're a believer in the legend or not. Even better, the coins collected from the fountain are donated to charity, so that little wish ends up helping someone else, too. After three visits, I'd still absolutely recommend making time for the Trevi Fountain. It can be crowded and touristy, but there's a reason people keep coming back. And maybe, if the legend is right, those coins really do bring you back to Rome.

Dang him! It was crowded, and a line of people were waiting to pay 2€ for an up close look. We decided not to do that. We got a selfie and a photo of the Fountain and we were good. By the way, I did throw a coin into the Fountain at night in 1967 when there were no crowds and no payment to see it up close. Wishes do come true, as I returned, and this time with the love of my life for the past 46 years.

We happened to see Quattro Fontane on our way to the Trevi Fountain. I had to leave a review for this place because I'd like you to make sure that you pass this area on your way to somewhere in Rome. The sculptures are gorgeous and worth an up-close look. You won't be spending all day here but I do think these are worth the 3-5 min you'll be spending. Hey, you could stay longer if you wanted to too but it shouldn't take that long to check out all four.
