As an 11 year veteran (7 as a camper, 4 on staff) I can't offer you an unbiased review. That said, Tawonga is one of the best places on earth. Located just 20 minutes outside the west gate of Yosemite, this overnight summer camp is a truly special place. They provide a structured nurturing environment where children can gain self-esteem, live and play in a community that they've helped create, and learn respect and love for nature and the environment around them. From backpacking Yosemite to climbing the perch in the ropes course, swimming in the river below middle-falls, or just laying out on Stone Couch learning about the stars, I have so many fond memories of this place, a Yelp review could never sufficiently encapsulate my love for Tawonga. I can honestly tell you that I would not be the person I am today without my many wonderful experiences at Tawonga. I learned both who I am as a Jew, as well as who I am as a young man. Just like Sara O., I look forward to sending my kids there when the time comes.

Absolutely one of the best done camps there is. Went there as a kid 30 years ago and send my kids now. Still great!

The theme is always about exploring yourself and there is an opportunity to do this through performance. However, no one has to perform. None of my kids are musically inclined but (three of my four kids) joined "rock band" and played the guitar, drums and keyboard for the first time. The fourth had a blast with all the other activities. There are kids from all walks of life, with every hair color (and piercings) but that's ok. Everyone is welcome and my kids (although very conservative) loved this idea and being friends with and accepted by kids of all different backgrounds. All four of my kids are so excited to go back each year. This summer will be three summers in a row. The counselors are exceptional. I have a very challenging bunch of kids and they really understood how to bring out the best in my kids. In fact, my oldest loves this place so much that she plans to become an counselors at Ucamps. Send you kids...they will LOVE it too!

BE AWARE of the Scam by Frantz G Glasz -- This Is My Real Experience…read more Hear me out you'll see why he's extremely evil, cruel, manipulative, someone you want to avoid at all cost. I purchased 10 private 1:1 tennis lessons from Frantz G Glasz, but only completed 4 due to extremely poor quality, unsafe instruction, unprofessional behavior, and his ongoing refusal to issue any refund despite multiple attempts to resolve the situation. 1. Suspicious payment methods & refusal to issue receipts Between Oct 2022 - Dec 2022, Frantz required the entire $1,000 payment upfront, and cash-only. He refused Venmo, Zelle, or any digital payment, and refused to provide a proper receipt. I had to insist multiple times just to get a basic text message confirming payment -- the entire arrangement already felt questionable and unprofessional. 2. Unsafe instruction that caused an injury In my 2nd lesson (10/22/22), due to his lack of guidance and proper coaching, I suffered a wrist injury that took 2 months to heal. For a total beginner, his careless approach was unsafe, and he showed no concern or accountability. Across all lessons, he put in minimal effort, offered almost no true instruction, and showed no intention of actually teaching. 3. Lied about court reservations & wasted my time During my 4th lesson (12/2/22), he claimed the court was reserved, but it was clearly not. When I said I needed to return to work since no court was available, he insisted he had "other courts reserved" and told me to get in his car. I trusted him -- and he drove me around San Francisco for nearly an hour with no reservations anywhere. The lesson never happened, and he left me far from the original meeting point afterward. He lied repeatedly, wasted my time, and acted irresponsibly. 4. Unreachable afterward & defensive when I raised concerns After that day, I tried to schedule my next lesson, but he ignored my messages. When I expressed concerns about the poor quality of instruction, he immediately became defensive, rude, and dismissive, showing zero interest in understanding or improving. His polite-sounding public review responses are performative -- in private he behaved very differently. 5. Inappropriate personal comments during lessons Throughout my lessons, he asked inappropriate personal questions (e.g., whether I was single) and talked about his own dating life -- which was unprofessional and made me uncomfortable. 6. Refused to refund unused lessons When I requested a refund for the remaining 6 lessons (lessons 5-10), he refused to refund even the 5th lesson, which had not happened yet. He took advantage of my trust and acted with dishonesty and zero professionalism. 7. Denied ever teaching me in public after I posted my review Over the past 3 years, I have attempted to contact him for a refund, especially given the unsafe coaching, injury, and unprofessional conduct. He never responded. After I posted an honest review about my experience, he publicly denied ever teaching me, which is simply false. This appears to be an attempt to protect his image rather than address legitimate concerns. Bottom line I trusted him because of his 5-star reviews, but my real experience was unsafe, manipulative, dishonest, and far below what was advertised. This whole process has caused me an unbearable amount of pain and has had a deep, lasting impact on my mental health. I was left with a very clear impression of his character: someone driven by greed, ego, and self-interest, with no regard for the impact he has on others. His actions felt deeply selfish, cruel, and manipulative. Avoid him. He took my money, provided unsafe and unprofessional lessons, and refused any accountability or refund.

The people of SACK - as well as of the Chinese Congregational Church (CCC) that runs the camp - continue to radiate a warmth and joy that is infectious. At Saturday night's third-annual fundraiser dinner, I had the opportunity to hear about the origins of the camp directly from one of its founders, Dick Hom. Forty-three years ago, Dick was a college student attending service at the CCC when he and a couple of his friends noticed that every summer there would be a large group of children playing parent-less across the street in Portsmouth Square (at the time one of the few parks in Chinatown). Upon asking around, Dick and his friends learned that the parents of these children had no place to put their kids while school was out of session. In all cases the families were extremely low-income, and in many cases there was only one parent in the home. So, while these parents were at work, they had little choice but to leave their children at the park to essentially be babysat by the community and each other. This was the inspiration for Dick and his partners to start a summer program at the church. The camp had a small and humble beginning but, as word spread, demand grew and the program progressed from half-day for a few weeks to the all-day, 8-week program we have today. That SACK has kept its enrollment fees so incredibly low over all these years is 100% attributed to the hard work by and dedication from everyone involved. Even after over four decades, they have never lost sight of their original mission. A huge KUDOS to all the counselors, directors, and church members who pour their time and their hearts into SACK...my daughter and I hope to be part of your community for many years to come.

Your child will love it here, it's guaranteed. They also get fed so you don't need to worry about lunch. Anyway, goodbye, farewell, I hope you have a good day. Don't forget to visit us. :)
