I only had a limited amount of time in the area and wanted to find a boutique with locally made artisan pieces from and was lucky to find this one in one of the travel guides at my hotel. I picked up a few different items, a small bird made from re-purposed metal, a lovely necklace, a stylish cell phone holder, and some special sea salt. So much fun. I'll be back for sure the next time I'm in the area!

What a beautiful gallery it is! You immediately feel as though you're in someone's home with a fireplace and walk down sitting area. The log beams are exposed and creates a warm welcoming space. Roy Vickers is a local artist whose beautiful screen prints are on display and beneath each print is a short story. Vickers is a talented artist who captures the spirit of coastal living on Tofino and surrounding areas. You'll be drawn to the bright colours, soothing images of mountains, eagles, the ocean and use of Indigenous symbolism in backgrounds will have you in awe.

In one large open gallery there were large photographs, paintings, 3D mixed media sculptures and three videos: two digital videos and one film strip. The current show is focused on the life of loggers and fire watch tower workers. The show is surprisingly interesting - each piece of art builds the story of the industry and the people who work in it. Not a bit of political or environmental jargon here - but I guess you bring your own thoughts on that matter. The woman at the front counter was kind and welcoming. And the art shop had some really great pieces - ceramics, jewelry and the ever-present silk scarf collection. Has an art museum shop ever NOT had a silk scarf display?

We went here to kill some time before a whale watch trip and found it to be quite interesting…read more There is one large fishing boat (The BCP45) the only known example of a wooden seiner (in its original configuration) still in existence in the center of the room and a volunteer will give you the history. There are many antique maritime instruments, a number of photos of the restoration of the original boat, and information about the fishing industry. You are able to go inside the boat and see how the fishermen lived on the boat. You can also see where the captain steered the boat and the fishing nets used. It was quite interesting and wish we had had more time to see everything.

Recently, my husband and I stayed three nights at the Haig-Brown B&B. I took up fly fishing not…read morelong ago and I read as much as I can on the subject. I fell in love wtih Roderick Haig-Brown's writing on fishing and many other things and discovered his house on the Campbell River had been turned into a B&B/museum--we had to go. When we arrived, Catherine greeted us with tea and cookies and began telling us stories about the Haig-Brown family, his conservation work, his writing, and his fly fishing. She took us into the family library, where Haig-Brown wrote many of his books, and she sent us down to the river to see where he had spent many hours fishing. Catherine responded to every question we asked with knowledge and good advice--we followed all the tips she offered and enjoyed every single one. The breakfasts Catherine made and served--bacon, eggs and potatoes, or home-made granola, berries and yogurt, or her sinfully delicious fresh out-of-the-oven scones-- set us up for our days of adventure. By the time we left, we both felt we had a new friend. We hated to leave, so we vowed to come back. This place and its host deserve the absolute highest rating--we would recommend it a thousand times!
