Recently, my husband and I stayed three nights at the Haig-Brown B&B. I took up fly fishing not…read morelong ago and I read as much as I can on the subject. I fell in love wtih Roderick Haig-Brown's writing on fishing and many other things and discovered his house on the Campbell River had been turned into a B&B/museum--we had to go. When we arrived, Catherine greeted us with tea and cookies and began telling us stories about the Haig-Brown family, his conservation work, his writing, and his fly fishing. She took us into the family library, where Haig-Brown wrote many of his books, and she sent us down to the river to see where he had spent many hours fishing. Catherine responded to every question we asked with knowledge and good advice--we followed all the tips she offered and enjoyed every single one. The breakfasts Catherine made and served--bacon, eggs and potatoes, or home-made granola, berries and yogurt, or her sinfully delicious fresh out-of-the-oven scones-- set us up for our days of adventure. By the time we left, we both felt we had a new friend. We hated to leave, so we vowed to come back. This place and its host deserve the absolute highest rating--we would recommend it a thousand times!

We went here to kill some time before a whale watch trip and found it to be quite interesting…read more There is one large fishing boat (The BCP45) the only known example of a wooden seiner (in its original configuration) still in existence in the center of the room and a volunteer will give you the history. There are many antique maritime instruments, a number of photos of the restoration of the original boat, and information about the fishing industry. You are able to go inside the boat and see how the fishermen lived on the boat. You can also see where the captain steered the boat and the fishing nets used. It was quite interesting and wish we had had more time to see everything.

Pat took us around the museum on a private tour showing and telling us fascinating facts about the specimens they have. Then we went out to the Trent River where he showed is how to spot and find where the fossils might be hidden. We found 80,000 year old clams, ammonites, nautilus', and lobsters. The whole family really enjoyed this experience!

While the Comox museum may not rival the Smithsonian Air & Space museum, it does have an excellent collection of artifacts and exhibits that are well maintained and organized in a coherent and thoughtful manner. Admission is by donation, which makes the museum a cost-effective way to entertain your family while still learning about Canadian history. Along with the main exhibit hall, the museum maintains a heritage air park where you're able to get up close to vintage aircraft. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and even provided me with batteries for free when my camera unexpectedly died. I would have liked to spend more time at the museum however my girlfriend's enthusiasm for aviation history had worn out, and we had other Canada Day activities to take in.

Very nice people who are clearly trying very hard to have an educational, pleasant museum that…read morehonors the history of their little town ... or at least that part that post-dates the arrival of Europeans. Based on these displays, however, you probably wouldn't know there were First Nations people living in the area in between the dinosaurs on the one hand, and BGen Money on the other hand who apparently did much of the early land speculation and development. But maybe they don't feel that's their warrant?
