My girlfriends and I wanted somewhere a little more upscale to eat and hang out at when we were at a cabin this April. We really enjoyed the atmosphere and felt safe dining indoors here. We got the Crispy Brie from the "Just Grazing" section and it wasn't much to split, but was a good taste for the 3 of us. I ordered the day's special of duck confit, my friend got the fried chicken and biscuit, and another friend got the Campfire burger. There was not one bad thing we could say about our meal. We ordered ice cream at the end and that was amazing as well. I highly suggest the salted caramel! Stay away from the Chocolate Chip bread crumb though--it sounds neat, but is literally bread in ice cream which was just odd. Fun to experience something I've never try again though! Would 100% recommend trying Campfire out. read more

While the menu is limited, what is on the menu can meet anyone's needs. They also have a kids meal which is oh so helpful when you are traveling with kids. One. Half of the restaurant is more line a restaurant and the other a bar. The upstairs small plates bar is so quaint and the terrace has a great ambiance as well. I usually think twice about dining in a hotel's restaurant. Most of the time, they have lackluster food, not much ambiance and inflated prices. Overall, Campfire appears to be an exception (although the prices do reflect the fact that it caters to visitors). Truth be told, we chose to go for several reasons: the reviews were pretty good, it was raining the day we arrived, and we had food credit at the hotel. That said, I'd still recommend a visit to Campfire. We sat at the bar, so the bartender (relatively new on the job) was also our server. We were pretty surprised when we looked at the menu and saw no vegetarian entrees and no traditional salads. The bartender "thought" they have a vegetarian menu. Sure enough, there was one. We were a bit surprised that with a fair number of vegetarians and so many people eating less meat that they didn't integrate the few additional vegetarian items on to the main menu. It isn't like this place has a menu the size of Cheesecake Factory! Anyway, we chose to order the burrata ratatouille app, the beet salad (a special that evening) and a grilled portobello. Shortly thereafter, the bartender came over to say that they ran out of the beet salad, so we ordered the watermelon salad (there wasn't much other choice - with no regular salad on the menu. The burrata and ratatouille was excellent. Very fresh and a nice change. The watermelon salad, however, was fine, but a little disappointing. It basically tasted like ... watermelon. I'm not sure if it needed more lime dressing or the dressing needed more punch. Also, the other ingredients were sparse, so they didn't add any meaningful flavor or texture to the salad. Staying at hotel this is located in and with AMEX we get $100.00 credit so figured we would have dinner there. Well that was a mistake. There is some good. The place is very comfortable with decent decor. The waiter and staff were very nice and attentive. Nice beers on tap and full service bar. The food though was pretty crappy. The special appetizer, and in fairness to the waiter he described it correctly, was salmon, tuna fish style. It was not terrible, just meh. The Rib Eye was terrible! I saw other bad reviews before writing mine and it was spot on. A Long Island Applebees would have been ashamed to serve this tough cut. It was also high end price which makes it even worse. It was not a huge steak I ate less than half. The side was some tasteless potatoes and vegetable. My wife's order - the Hunter's chicken was drowned in sauce. Might have been ok had it not been drowned. Skip this place, though it seems the area's restaurants are lacking. read more

Such a disappointment. Made reservations weeks in advance for a Bachelorette trip, and had chosen this restaurant for a nicer dinner based on atmosphere/menu. The waiter that sat us was super friendly and attentive but unfortunately we never made it to our meals as we were approached by the manager and asked to move upstairs due to noise complaints from other guests. Now - I would absolutely understand if we were some rowdy bunch making a scene, but it was a party of 12 (half of which were pregnant!) that were conversing completely respectably. The restaurant was also half empty, so we felt it was completely out of line when we asked this manager if we could try and quiet down or the other table could be moved instead and she refused both options immediately. The chef came out and was very professional, but we felt disrespected during the previous confrontation and it was already an uncomfortable situation that we didn't want to shadow the special night. The Boat House was able to get us in instead, and we ended up having a fabulous meal there (with a MUCH more welcoming staff). Terrific service ... Sam... excellent venison chili ...nice large bowl.. could have been dinner! Cuban panini very tasty and large. Took 1/2 home. My wife had a lemon shrimp risotto... could have been more lemony.. tasty. Shrimp cooked perfect. Warm cornbread on table. Fine treat! Really great setting in renovated old hotel. Lots of seating options... booths, tables, bar, open kitchen view bar, plug in tech stool bar... take your pick if early. Roamed around the hotel...the upstairs bar is wonderful place for drinks before or after dinner. We have been coming to this establishment for New Years Eve dinner for the past three years, and the service and food has been 5-star...this year unfortunately the food was absolutely awful...lackluster in flavor and was not worth the $95 per plate...our waitress made us feel extremely rushed in our dining experience...it was almost as though she was going to get a bonus at the end of the night or shuffling as many people through the restaurant as possible! This place opened in January, after a long renovation. I was actually surprised that the project finally got finished. The building is beautiful, and they took a lot of care, particularly upstairs, to restore it to its original glory from the 20s. As for the restaurant, it was inconsistent. I was seated for lunch, and then ignored for far too long. Finally I asked one of the servers if I had a server. She asked me who seated me, and then ended up waiting on me. I don't know what that was all about. I ordered a roasted corn soup with bacon, and that was really good, although lukewarm. I ordered the cappuccino which came as pictured. No foam. Not really a cappuccino, in my mind. I asked for a roll or something to go with the soup, and the server acted like she'd never heard of such a thing. She finally provided a piece of bread. I thought that was truly weird. Most of the time, with a hearty soup, they include a roll, or at least little crackers or something. I also ordered roasted cauliflower, which was a mixed bag. It was a little too greasy, needed a bit of seasoning, and although it was done to perfection, it needed to have been roasted more - it wasn't very roasted tasting or looking. It was OK, but I make better at home. For a place which is reaching for an upscale market, this place needs a bit of work on service and food. I think they'll probably get there if they want to. The drinks are overpriced for Saranac Lake. New York prices, and this is the boonies. read more

Who knew a HOTEL restaurant would have some of the best food in the entire Lake Placid area?? Seriously it was so delicious that we ate there for dinner two nights in a row. Cornbread at the tables is homemade and delicious. Everything else was good too. The atmosphere was charming (although the open kitchen can make the dining area a little smoky), and service was good. They took my soy allergy seriously both nights and the chef let me know if there was anything they wouldn't feel comfortable with me ordering. Overall a great experience. If we're back in the area, you bet we're visiting Campfire. read more

Beautiful all glass store front exposes a welcoming decor from the outside. We were charmed so we stopped in for dinner despite the sparse crowd on a Thursday night. Staff was very friendly and we sat alone the windows in the cool ( and comfortable) chairs at our table. The place was somewhere between dimly lit and bright. It was actually just right for the space. We started with the bread and fondue. Omg! It was delicious. Also they give you homemade corn bread to start w maple butter. My partner devoured it. I got the Cobb salad that had trout on it. It was a bit tangy and quite unique. Really fresh to boot! It welcomed after the bread and cheese. My partner got the chicken entree with mashed potatoes and carrots. It was out of this world. Whatever sauce it came with was amazing and only made the dish better. We also had a bowl of homemade cream of mushroom soup that I cherished. So good! We got the apple crisp She brought out the cheesecake by accident instead and let us try it since it was a mistake. The burgers and duck entrees were quite good but the fries and paella fell flat (the fries tasted like they had been frozen and the there was minimal seasoning on the paella with undercooked butternut squash). More notably, service was slow and the food took a very long time to come out. Checked out of the Saranac Hotel and decided to give campfire Adirondack grill a try. A Limited menu, but nice cooL spot to grab a bite. Had the soup of the day and I it was hot and tasty. The main problem with this restaurant is service. Consistently the wait staff is slow and not knowledgeable regarding food in general nor their menu in particular. Reservations are inconsistently on time and a reservation is no guarantee you will have a table anywhere near that time. The food quality is slightly above average in general but there are always a few duds in every meal that detracts. The bar staff is amazingly slow. We have tried this restaurant 3 times as it is in a small town and we try to support local business. Cannot support this place any longer. It is a frustrating experience and clearly not worth the effort or money. There aren't many choices in Saranac Lake unfortunately. This place is not a keeper. read more

This place is really trendy and cute! It's located on the lobby floor inside Hotel Saranac by Hilton. I am giving it an extra star just because I loved the ambience and theme so much. I had a their free cornbread with maple butter, their charcuterie board with toasted baguette slices, local cheeses, coppa ha, Dijon-style mustard, jam, pickled onion, and cured duck, and two cocktails (caramel apple pie martini & buck hunter). The apple martini was $13 and buck hunter was $12. The apple martini is their new and seasonal drink. It had Crown Royal apple, butterscotch, Bailey's Irish cream & caramel syrup. I thought it was a bit on the strong side. I liked the dried apple garnish. The buck hunter was Jameson Irish whiskey, lemon juice, ginger beer, & lemon twist. It tasted nice. Our waitress wasn't very well informed on what was on the charcuterie board. She didn't know the types of cheeses on the board and she described cured ham as a sort-of-beef-jerky. Nevertheless, she was nice and quick. I really love the mountain/camp-themed decor with the fire logs, hammered iron utensils, skillet for the corn bread, and enamel speckled camp-looking plates. I liked it juxtaposed with the modern chic-ness of their armchairs and fabric patterns. The place had an upscale look and feel to it with a casual theme. I also liked their chill music. They have TVs with sports going on so it made the ambience a little more casual. If you're sitting by the front of the restaurant, you can people watch. They have camp-esque desserts like s'mores and a cookie skillet. I didn't get to try their desserts but I'd love to in the future. read more

Wow, what a fantastic place to enjoy an amazing dinner to celebrate the New Year. The food, service, and dining environment were all superb. Chuch, the host, made us feel welcome as soon as we walked in the door, and checked in with us from start to finish - he really made our experience feel extra special. Cornbread and a generous scoop of butter was a perfect start. Fantastic selection of beers of draft - was very pleased with the gose I was served. Main dish of salmon with mashed potatoes and asparagus was perfect and one of the best salmon dishes I've ever had. And S'mores for Two (but could easily serve six) for dessert was such a unique experience and not to be missed! Looking forward to enjoying another meal at Campfire in the future! read more

Complete miss for us. Stopped by mid-week for lunch. Nearly empty. Waited at entry stand forever for someone to seat us. Waiter was very slow to greet us. Ordered salads. One came without the advertised dressing. Waiter never came by to check on us, finally flagged him down, he said he would bring dressing, he forgot, flagged him down again, finally got it. Other salad (Caesar) had croutons with strong off-taste, could not eat them, separated out of salad. We will not be going back. One bright point, best lemonade I've ever had! read more

It is not often I feel compelled to leave an unfavorable review but our experience should be shared so others don't spend an exorbitant amount of money for a meal a toddler could have cooked better. The positive is that the service was very good. Our waitress was attentive and pleasant. The ambiance was nice. The food is supposedly locally sourced. Living in this area, we are familiar with our local products and I question if those local products were what was served. The prices for what was produced and served were absurd. The burger was thin and definitely not grass fed, local beef (ok, maybe local from the grocery store). The fries had been under a heat lamp for too long or quite possibly, reheated from an earlier service. The mac and cheese was all but a pile of starch. The cornbread was stale and the maple butter-wait, was there maple in the butter?? We took are $220 burger and mac and cheese dinner home for our dogs but hen decided it would be bad for them and threw it away. read more

This place has an amazing breakfast! Their appetizer mini biscuits with apple cider jam is to die for! My only complaint is that I regret not asking for more :). The dinner I found to be just average. Once again the appetizer bread was spot on. This time it was a maple corn bread with whipped butter. My harvest gnocchi with promises of autumn flavors was disappointing though. The smoked apples were hard and had such an overpowering smoky flavor I had to avoid them. The service was great though! Not a bad place! Food is pretty good, but nothing special. Honestly, hit or miss depending on what you order. Some of the waitstaff is adorable and sweet while other members are off putting. My most recent visit included my waiter noticeably sighing when we ordered drinks and then seeming very annoyed when we asked if it was possible to do separate checks. The atmosphere and the decor of the place are great. Additionally, before your dinner, they bring out this corn bread and butter that is simply amazing. There are not a lot of gluten free options (such as no gluten free toast at breakfast) but they do have gluten free buns at dinner. 5 stars for the food and execution of the dishes. Absolutely delicious. Chef was smart and created a tidy menu with options for everyone to enjoy (although a few more gluten free variations would be helpful, had to request of my server the chef grains be substituted with fingerling potatoes) and readily, expertly and timely executed by the kitchen. Every protein was prepared perfectly. The cocktails were delicious too. Now the criticism was for the front of the house. Everyone was very nice but the servers could use some additional coaching. I would hope by mid/end of August in the busy summer months of a tourist destination these kinks would have been worked out. 1. The kitchen was out of the pasta dish, the only vegetarian dinner option. Our server did not tell us this up front and only after it was requested by one person in our party were we informed "oh that is the only item we are out of" 2. We had to ask what the soup of the day was, what was in "chef's grains", and was the vegetable side dish was and how it was prepared. 3. When our server told us about the chef grains after we asked she said "a mixture of rice, quinoa, pasta, and stuff like that" 4. When our server told is about the daily vegetable she said "cauliflower" when we asked how it was prepared she said "I don't know, boiled?" 5. Don't know if there were any specials of the evening as our server never told us. Suggestion: if the kitchen is out of the only vegetarian dinner entree make a special that is vegetarian as a substitute. 6. Our dirty plates from our appetizers were only cleared when the dinner plates arrived making a bit of a traffic jam on the table. 7. Several dirty plates from dinner were never cleared even when dessert was served to the table. 8. Our server could have circled back a couple of times during our meal to make sure we were ok and then she would have seen the dirty plates and taken any additional drink orders. I hope to return here again next summer as the food was indeed superb and hope the front of the house is better trained in the future. read more

I have eaten at the Campfire 6 or 7 times. I was pleasantly surprised by the look of the room. It was modern, comfy with touches of the Adirondacks. The food was good. Our favorite is a pot of mussels. It is an appetizer but is enough for a meal. The mussels come in a pot of broth with five or six pieces of toast for dipping. It is delicious. We are so happy to see the Hotel Saranac open. It's big sign on the roof is like a welcome to Saranac Lake. It is a great addition to this mountain town. We will eat there again soon. read more

Went here on Sunday night with a party of 8- first time and probably last. We have friends in the area and were a small part of their family group, and as they treated us I didn't feel comfortable complaining at the restaurant. The atmosphere is lovely and initial service seemed efficient, although the one person of the group who ordered a nonalcoholic beverage didn't get it until after the appetizers were served. The warm cornbread served at the table was delicious, and we also had a few orders of a shrimp taco appetizer that was really good, as well as the flatbread appetizer. That was about the end of the good food. Burgers were dry as toast (while still being pink in the middle, weird). Fries overcooked and yet cold and soggy. Fried chicken burned and with barely any meat on a very small piece. Non-fried chicken almost too spicy to eat. Salad that was advertised as having burrata had instead a big ball of mozzarella (not bad but NOT burrata). The most disappointing aspect was the service at the end of the meal. Everyone was finished (albeit with a fair amount of food left on most plates) and the check was unceremoniously placed in the center of the table without a single plate being cleared. At some point the waiter picked up 3 of the 8 plates and then only returned with the credit card receipt to sign. A few of us lingered to finish a glass of wine, and while we were sitting the bartender came a cleared most of the glassware (it was near the end of the night) but didn't pick up a single dirty plate. To me that speaks to a very poorly trained staff. It's a shame that such a pretty place with what seem to be the tools for good food and service really had neither. read more
