She was friendly and very helpful (drew us a great map of town and made us dinner reservations) but she is not on duty often and rooms are cleaned only every other day (I don't need a full cleaning very often but I like fresh towels every day). We arrived at 4 pm but there was no one there to let us in. Fortunately we had been emailed instructions in advance. The directions to find the place were confusing (it's right as you exit the tunnel from the train station and right next door to a mini mart; the door is more wood than yellow), but once we found the door we were able to use the code to get into the building and had no problems getting into our room. If you're from the US and won't have cell service in Italy make sure you get the building code in advance! I booked the "luxury room" with a terrace for a small extra fee. It was immaculately clean and perfectly comfortable but rather sparsely appointed and not really what I'd call luxury. We didn't make as much use of the terrace as I had hoped, largely because we were out trying to see the other four towns, but partly because the chairs didn't have cushions and weren't super comfortable. In early May the temperature still dipped into the low 50s at night and even with the blanket we found in a cupboard we were quite chilly. The biggest drawback to this room, however, is that it is up four flights of stairs and the building has no lift. It was pretty unpleasant to come back to after a long day of hiking. They really should make this clearer on their website. For us it was merely an annoyance but for the disabled or elderly it could be a much bigger issue. There is free wi-fi but it was extremely spotty and I was never able to get it to work in the bedroom. Overall, the location is great and the price struck me as reasonable but I can't really enthusiastically recommend San Giorgio. It was a serviceable place to stay in Manarola, which was our favorite Cinque Terre village, but not quite what we had hoped for.

A short walk to the train station easily connects to the other Cinque Terre towns and the hiking trails are also very accessible. The view comes at the cost of a healthy trek up the hill. We visited all the towns and felt that Manarola had the small town, not as touristy, good food vibe we were looking for. Simone, the manager was the best: helpful and prompt in responding to our needs.

Our concierge was a young lady by the name of giulia that would come every day to check on us and they gave us tickets for breakfast( simple) to the local cafe . The rooms are spotless and well maintained ( we had a washer and dryer in the bathroom). Very quiet neighborhood and you really don't see any of the other guests. My husband and I went on our honeymoon to Cinque Tera and found it very romantic and reasonable. Great wifi connection and free parking.

Note that though we reserved over a year in advance, some of the da Paulin apartments were already booked. Conchiglia is perfect for two people, and would be tight but doable with four. The owners (Eraldo and Donatella) are very responsive, appearing within minutes if there are any questions/issues. Eraldo also provided us advance notice of a storm watch. The location is very convenient. Unlike many apartments in the Cinque Terre, other than the final few steps to the apt itself there are no staircases over which one must lug luggage. And the woman employee who met us kindly insisted on pulling my wife's roller suitcase up the short pedestrian roadway to the apt. Wi-Fi internet access worked fine. The small (co-op) grocery is located a three minute walk away. One night we bought some octopus, greens, tomatoes, and more in order to make a simple dinner in the apt, after which we finished our wine on the small balcony. The view is a little bit of the ocean and mainly the terraced hillside opposite. Very pleasant. TIP: if dining at Trattoria dal Billy, rather than walking up the winding street one can go left, left, left out of the apt (up some staircases) and reach this restaurant in just four minutes. The 3 rooms are located in the building that they live in and it is located on the main street of Manarola. The apartments are located away from this building. The 3 rooms that they rent have just been renovated and they are brand new! Everything worked well in the room and we had no complaints. If you are staying in one of the rooms, I would recommend "Perla" since it has a patio. We got beer, wine, prosciutto and parmigiano from a small grocery store on the same street, and hanged out on the patio every night. It was quite lovely. I would love to stay in one of their properties again! Donatella and Eduardo are very responsive via email. Highly recommended!!

Alberto has personally renovated a tiny village in the hills overlooking Lavagna and made it into a vacationers paradise. Wisely, he has retained the charm of the original structures while adding the convenience of a modern home for his guests. Alberto also grows olives, grapes,and some other fruit/veg which he graciously offered us on a near daily basis. I have to say, and I'm not even exaggerating...he makes the BEST olive oil I have ever tasted! As for amenities, this place has everything one could need; good quality WiFi, thoughtfully stocked kitchen, quality beds and bedding, brand new bathrooms with high end fixtures, and an awesome sitting area overlooking Lavagna and the sea. Sitting outside and having dinner with a great glass of Alberto's wine was one of my favorite memories of our Italy trip. I should also mention the beautiful grounds of La Torre del Borgo. It's a paradise on earth and a very relaxing place to chill out. Everywhere you look you see olive trees, grape vines, cherry trees, beautiful hillside vistas, and of course, the sea. Cozy, quiet, and VERY modern and clean! Everything looks and feels as if you're the first people to ever stay in the room - the showers are even especially clean! She provides a mini fridge, safe, kettle in your room, TV, and a little basket of toiletries. Definitely will be back to visit Carola and to stay in this lovely place! There's even a garden to sit out and read if you like, while you overlook the beautiful town of Monterosso. It's such a prime location right near the best restaurants in town!

Monterosso is very well maintained and manicured which is not always the case for the other 4 cities. We love Casa di Andrea - amazing upkeep and quite high tech for a B&B (electronic key card!). Our room was tidy and cute - it looked like it was just recently renovated. The shower had good water pressure, and the shower door could be closed fully to block out water from getting the bathroom floor all wet. Since Casa is located up the hill, I don't recommend this property for older folks or anyone with mobility issue! You will have to climb up multiple flights of stairs. But the pro is that the view is amazing! Carola runs this property and does it with such great taste! Her breakfast, although simple, is actually our favorite among all the hotels we visited on our trip. From the napkins to the cups and mugs, everything was colorful and elegantly presented! We got fresh coffee, fresh cut fruits, croissants, ham and cheese with toasts, and yogurt for breakfast. My husband typically doesn't eat breakfast and hates carbs, he made an exception for Carola because he loved what she put together. I highly recommend this property for your stay in Monterosso! The patio doors and window had no screen so when we opened the room filled with mosquitoes. But it was very pretty to look out over the water with the doors closed. The location was nice but I believe everything in town is about the same distance from the center of town. And the train is near by everything. Long story short the place is nice with a comfy bed and we felt safe. But many options in town also looked very nice and were less than half the price so I would shop around a little before committing.

The apartment has a living room, kitchen, 1 double "room" (really just a partitioned area from the second bed "room"), a double sofa bed, a very, very tiny single room, single bathroom with shower, huge terrace with a view of the main strip (don't believe them when they say "seaview" - that means you can see a sliver of the ocean). Apartment has a full kitchen, AC and satellite TV. The apartment sleeps 5 (two each in the two double beds, 1 in the small coffin...errr... I mean bedroom) but you can pay extra for extra people. You can comfortably sleep one person on the couch and then more people (maybe 3) on the floor of the large living room. Make all of your arrangements online through the website. You will then be given instructions on where to find the main rental office for Alla Porta Rossa where you meet Barbara. After you've paid (cash gets you a discount) you will then be led to the apartments. I love, love, love this apartment and will try to stay here as much as possible when I'm here. Hopefully they come out ok after the recent mudslides. There's nothing like the feeling of coming "home" at night, going to the balcony, opening a bottle of wine and a variety of cheeses and just looking at all the stars in the sky. Buy food from any of the restaurants downstairs and then ask them if you can take it up to the house if you desire. You can also do your laundry in the small (I mean tiny) washing machine and then air dry it right outside on the balcony. Remember that this is an apartment so no one will be coming by to fix your sheets. If you want to feel like a local this is THE place to stay! If you're coming here by train give yourself extra time to get here. The trains are completely unreliable and you WILL be late most of the time if you don't account for this. You do NOT want to piss Barbara off. Trust me on that one. =D Sorry Barbara! I will definitely be coming back to Manarola and will rent from Alla Porta Rossa again.
