Touchdown is the downstairs bar in the Rydges Hotel at Sydney Airport. I'm not sure what is more…read moreconfusing: the fact that it is named after an American football term; or the fact that they couldn't make a basic cocktail correctly. (More on that later). The vibe here was laid back sports bar with a focus on beers, wine and simple drinks. Sadly, the beer list was short and standard (Australian macrobrews like VB, Carlton, etc.) The short food list was actually better than I expected, with a selection of apps (wings, meatballs), entrees (burgers, steak, salmon) and desserts. It was certainly enough to suit me, so I ate here for dinner and watched some local sports (continuing my increasing fascination with cricket). My burger and fries were pretty good, and just what I wanted. But after a few mediocre beers I decided to test the bar by ordering something basic. Specifically, I asked for an Old Fashioned (It's a never-ending quest). The young bartender got busy, muddling some fruit, adding sugar and bitters, before finally adding the liquor (which I couldn't see). The result tasted familiar, but strange...REALLY strange. I sipped slowly, but it never got any better. After about 15 minutes, the bartender proudly showed me the single malt scotch he made it with... [Insert Forehead Slap here]. No wonder it tasted strange - This drink is made with Rye or Bourbon only; and what a waste of a single malt! Dear management- you might want to think about training your bartenders to do something more than pour wine and beer.

I have been and still am a frequent visitor to the Ashfield Hotel, sometimes on a daily basis…read more I would like to commend the staff members currently employed at the Hotel. I can't say enough about the great job they do. You have the most amazing staff members, Trisha, Dream, Apple, Katie, Channy, Myskina and Pitcha who are such attentive, well-mannered girls who go over and beyond for patrons and they emit such a welcoming and comfortable vibe to anyone entering the hotel which, I think is significantly important for patrons. I refer to them as "my children". Any patron who enters the Hotel is automatically greeted with a smile and acknowledgement of presence. They are aware of what certain patrons normally drink and have that drink brought to them within seconds. That is not the norm in other places which I have frequented. The girls are always on the go in keeping patrons' drinks flowing without the need to ask, the surrounds are constantly being cleaned and kept impeccably tidy in and around the entire areas of the Hotel. I would also like to give a shout out to Matt, Gerard, David and Petronius. These boys do an amazing job, always checking on other staff members ensuring the smooth running and operations within the Hotel are maintained and patrons are comfortable. On a more important note, my greatest thanks must go to the Security Guard, Mo. Such precision in security. I have witnessed his diplomacy in the terrible situations where he can calm the angriest person. It is quite obvious he takes his work seriously and implements it diligently. He is always checking on patrons in all areas of the Hotel especially in the gaming section. Overall, The Ashfield has come a long way in the last couple of years. It feels like a second home. This is a place I would not give up for another. I have no hesitation in recommending the Ashfield Hotel to anyone wanting a great experience and fantastic service.

I mean Wikipedia reckons that Chicken is more readily available in Australia than Veal and that's why we make Chicken ones.. Edit please! . I just wanted a Schnitty or a Parmi. The Ashfield Hotel provided. A Parmi. Double the fist! I mean the thing was bigger than 2 of my hands. 1 point It was delicately fried to perfection. 1 point. It was beautifully cooked inside. 1 point It had bottled Parmigiana sauce. 1/2 point The cheese was great. 1 point. 4.5 aint bad. I like to measure a pub's gastronomical efforts by the cut of their Sniz (tautology intended) and this was O.K by me. The beer was a let down though. I had to take back my 2nd Cooper's Pale ale because it tasted like VB. Easy mistake to make I guess... they're both green taps.... and they were next to each other..... Oh never mind, the Barman was nice enough about it to give me a new one. They do have a cocktail happy hour at some stage, either Thurs or Friday, but you'll wait a while to get it made. Undergoing some sort of reno to accommodate smokers/pokie addicts but dont let that put you off. The food is not bad. Attracts a lot of people who wear Hi-Vis garments. If you don't mind a tradie or two. This is the pub for you.

You can get a burger with fries ranging from cheeseburger, vegan burger, to fried chicken burger and a few others. The fit out is pretty cool, large outdoor area and chill vibe and staff. Food came out rather quick, I thought $10 was a great deal so I ordered a fried chicken burger and Bushwick burger. Bushwick burger is beef, cheese, onion, pickle, lettuce, tomato sauce, on an nyc style. Hold up, what's an NYC style bun? I've spent a lot of time in New York City and have never heard of such a thing...NYC style pizza sure. NYC style bun? This is some faux BS trying to win customers in an attempt to seem more authentic methinks... Anyway, the fried chicken burger was great, definitely up there with the best in Sydney, comparable to Mary's, Pub Life (prior to the new one,) and Pinbone. The Bushwick burger on the other hand was OK. It seriously just tasted like a Whopper from Hungry Jack's. Not a bad thing...but nothing special either, because if I wanted an imitation of something I would have just gone to the original. Will have to come back to try the cheeseburger. Chicken is 4.5/5 Bushwick is 3/5
