My wife and I have stopped by Ca'n Miquel twice for gelato now, and it's definitely a gelato stop that you should stop by if you are in Palma. Given there are a lot of geleterias in the more touristy parts of town (such as the old city), it may be difficult to distinguish. Ca'n Miquel is off one of the main drags through the old city (Jaume III Avenue) but only by a minute or so - so it's easy to get to, but at the same time, it is in a much quieter neighborhood. Popping by closer to closing time will have you find a very packed dining area, while the afternoon is generally half-empty. While the servers don't necessarily speak fluent English, the signage (which has English explanations for flavors) and the accessibility of visual aids to show what is a scoop vs. scoops, cone vs. bowl make ordering simpler.
The one flavor that I would recommend that anyone visiting must get would be the Jamaican cookie flavor. The Jamaican chocolate is the darker and richer flavor, but the cookies that are crumbled up into this gelato give it a really nice chew and texture. In short, it's paradise if you are a chocolate fan/fiend. While I did give the Jamaican hazelnut flavor a try, it didn't quite have the same impact - the hazelnut is blended into the gelato, giving it a lighter hue and less of a rich flavor. Both lighter / vanilla-like flavors we had (regular vanilla, as well as the milk merengue) didn't quite work as well, largely because the gelato is a bit more icy than it is creamy, meaning that the milkiness of each always came off as a bit diluted.
That said, Ca'n Miquel is still worth a visit for their gelatos. They're homemade, and while some can be a bit repetitive at times (you will find multiple iterations based on Jamaican chocolate), it is excellent and a very decent value given the flavor. I wouldn't put it above the gelato I had in Florence, but it is still a great sweet treat at any time of the day. read more
