This place is like an art gallery in the middle of a long Northern road trip through the woods in Ontario past Sault Ste Marie. This is just crazy gorgeous country, wild and unpopulated and with some of the most incredible beaches, and the art here is all profoundly tied to the place. Canadian Carver features wood carvings in particular, including work from great carvers across Canada. This is a uniquely woodsy and Canadian art form, and the work makes for awesome gifts - the lamps are my favourite. There are bits of other art work and touristy stuff here. Canadian Carver - Arts & Crafts Near Me - Batchawana Bay, Ontario

We stayed in Batchwana Bay for 3 night and made a stop here each day. They have everything! A general store, ice cream stand, wood carving shop, tourist store, and full service gas station with great attendants. Garbage bags provided( don't litter Superior) and had free coffee and ice water in the store (Alzheimer's support donations). My son bought 3 tshirts with funny sayings, I got a great mug, dip mix, and my husband got his fishing license. Great general store with smoked fish too! Loved the weather station. The Canadian Carver is a "must stop" location on our annual summer camping trips to Lake Superior Provincial Park. Located in Pancake Bay, partway between Sault Ste. Marie & Wawa, on Highway 17, this is an excellent location to stop and stretch your legs. They are open seasonally, from May through October (similar to when the Provincial Parks in that area are open for camping). This location is in close proximity to Pancake Bay Provincial Park, and is a "short" drive from Lake Superior Provincial Park. The Canadian Carver is technically just 1 of the stores located at this rest stop. It also features a Camp Store/General Store, the Agawa Crafts store, & an Esso gas station. With ample parking for both cars and RV's, this is an ideal gas stop. The restrooms have also been impeccably clean when we have been here. They also have a kenneled dog-run area (did not have our dogs with us, so we did not check it out), some teepees, and other interesting things to check out. A breakdown of the store offerings: Canadian Carver: I love this store! The wood carvings for sale are stunning, and display a wide variety of techniques. I also like that they have some other art objects for sale, like pottery, paintings and prints. This would be a great place to pick up a one-of-a-kind souvenir (A hand-carved Moose Wine Stopper?...you know you need it...) Agawa Crafts: It a more typical souvenir store, featuring some locally made crafts (including moccasins!), t-shirts, blankets, and other goodies. One of my favorite sweatshirts came from this store! The workers are also very friendly. Camp Store: This is a general type store that also has a LCBO license (aka, you can buy wine & beer here). It is always interesting to browse around in. It would be a great place to buy camping staples if you run out of something basic, and you don't want to have to drive back to the Sault or to Wawa...but I would still consider doing the majority of your grocery shopping in one of the bigger towns. There is a cute little ice cream stand that operates outside of the camp store, but I can't verify if it is good or not ;-). ESSO on the Go: One of the sparse locations to refill your vehicle on this stretch of 17. The fuel made our car keep running...not sure what else I can say about this one :-). read more
