I usually stop by this place after spending time in Harrison, but after this last experience, I won't be returning. I was with my partner and my mother-in-law and when we entered the store, there was an older woman with glasses standing behind the counter. Not very welcoming, she barely greeted us properly, even though we were the only ones in the shop.
I stopped by a display with creams (made from hazelnut butter, I think) and innocently unscrewed one of the jars of cream that had no seal on it to see what it smelled like. Almost instantly, the woman behind the counter barked at me that I shouldn't do that, and she came rushing over to snatch it (honestly, she *snatched* the jar from my hands) away from me. If she'd been allowed, she probably would have rapped my knuckles with a ruler or something. Then she accused me of removing the plastic protective seal from the jar, and took the jar back behind the counter. When I protested and said I didn't remove anything, and that I wanted to see the jar again to see if there even was any plastic seal on it, she refused to show it to me. My partner and mother-in-law were pretty offended by her rudeness, and they spoke up to defend me. Instead of apologizing for her behaviour, she continued to be rude, so we just told her off and left the store.
I'm not sure what was up this lady's bum, but she was totally out of line in how she behaved towards me. I love supporting local businesses, and always buy lots when I go to places like the Farm House Natural Cheeses and Honeyview Farm, but even local businesses need to know how to treat their customers with respect. We certainly didn't get that at Canadian Hazelnut, and I'll be sure to share my experience with any friends and family who are planning a trip out the Agassiz/Harrison. read more
