If I could leave a 0-star review, I would because that is what they deserve. I am a master's student in biomedical sciences, and I was looking for a coffee shop to study for finals when I found this place. I ordered a latte, and the owner, Usman, seemed very nice and friendly at first. When I sat down and began studying, I noticed another older man in the restaurant, which seemed to be one of the friends or a family member of the staff, staring at me with hostility. I am a Black man, and so of course, this look rubbed me the wrong way. For the first hour that I was there, I caught him staring at me multiple times with the same glance, and he didn't look away even when my eyes met his. He even left the store at one point, and even made the effort to stare down at me the entire time that he walked past, though I had never interacted with him or anyone else for that matter while I was there. I soon began to notice the same nasty stares from the cook behind the grill, though these weren't as long. Once I finished my studies, I made sure to pack my things away, threw out my garbage, and asked to use the bathroom before I left. It was around 5:45 p.m. today when I went into the bathroom, and I know that because I sent a text to a friend around 5:35 p.m., 10 minutes before I asked Usman about the bathroom. Once I was in the bathroom, after around 5 or so minutes, he had knocked to ask if I was okay, and I told him yes and I would be out shortly. Just 3 or so minutes after that, someone began banging on the door aggressively and turning the knob. I was able to keep track of the time here as well because I was watching a video on my phone as I was using the restroom, which was 13 minutes long, and I was only in the bathroom from the time the video started until it finished. Once I got out of the bathroom, Usman, the old man who had been staring at me since I entered, and even the staff behind the grill, all began yelling at me, saying, "You can't be using the bathroom like that. You've been in there for over an hour" and talking about how I was inconveniencing other customers. At that point, I was the only customer in the store and was the only one in there for over an hour. I looked at my phone after this "more than one hour" statement and saw that the time was 6 p.m., so I had been in there for 15 minutes at best. I felt that they were trying to gang up on me, so I quietly collected my things and exited. All the while, they were continuing to aggressively chastise me as I was walking away. These people are rude, dare I say racist, as they were most polite and conversational with the white customers they had from the Park Slope area, and I feel that the way I was treated after leaving, especially considering the looks I was getting beforehand, was too close to simply be coincidence. After reading the other reviews, I can see that this behavior is a pattern, and I believe these people should not be in business as long as they are so quick to disrespect their customers. read more

Needs more meat- the bread takes it over and it was a bit dry. And I've had the Roman Empire- that was better- I it could use a better portion of meat. It should be a huge sandwich for the price. Ordered from this spot a few times. The food is decent but they take a while to deliver. All the times I have ordered took over an hour to deliver where I work less than 10 minutes away. The last time I ordered from here I ordered breakfast, yogurt parfait, hot oatmeal, raisin cinnamon bagel with salmon cream cheese, aussie burger and a bagel boost for the office staff. They ran out of cinnamon raisin bagel for the bagel boost which was fine and was able to customize the other orders with no problem. Person who picked up the phone was nice enough. Received the food over an hour later. Everything was fine, no complaints with the orders EXCEPT for the hot oatmeal. I've ordered oatmeal many times in my life and when I received mine I was very surprised. There was barely any oats in it, it was 95% milk and I had to swim with my spoon to find a few specks of oatmeal in it. I am also lactose intolerant so with the amount of milk in it I would not be able to have it at all. I called the place to ask for a replacement because I did not know it came with milk or at least this amount of milk and the person on the phone was very rude to me, telling me that it was my fault that I didn't specify that I was lactose intolerant and that I should have known the oatmeal comes like that with milk. He did not offer to replace my order or apologize but continued to say that it was very busy and that he did not have time to be on the phone with me with my complaints and that if I brought it down to him he will replace it. I asked to speak to the manager and he said he was the manager. I am upset because our clinic orders from them pretty often and I was never treated so rudely before. I personally will not be ordering from them again and I am very disappointed in the lack of customer service and support that they offer. read more

Nice little deli a couple of blocks away from the Atlantic subway stop and near the Barclays Center. Looked up @ the menu and saw a breakfast burrito with chorizo for $4.00. The burrito was very good and worth the $ I spent on it. It wasnt huge and it wasn't too small whereas I would be hungry in a short period of time. They have many specials to choose from here as they have a sign outside that shows you whats on the daily. The guys that work here weren't too friendly, but it is Brooklyn lol. A weekend staple for us- the egg/cheese/meat on a roll in the various combinations plus the surprisingly good coffee make it an easy choice. The panni sandwiches are good as well for lunch - the Russki's a favorite here as well. A couple small tables for two people to sit at, but we've always had it to go. (They take phone orders for pickup, too, which is nice). Can't beat the location - anyone heading south out of the subway will go right past it on the way home. These guys deserve less than one star for the way the owner just treated me because I DARED buy a hungry man on the street a sandwich. If you had a problem with that gentleman (who was mentally unstable, though this was not immediately obvious to me or my partner who were standing outside when he approached us asking for food), you might have said something when he walked in. Instead, you chose to "stick it out" for the $25 I'd wind up spending on him. And he definitely wasn't easy to deal with. I get it. Many folks aren't these days. However, the owner of this store screaming at me when I kindly tried to apologize for the disturbance of some random man I'd bought a sandwich? Unacceptable. Made a quick pit stop here for coffee. I got a surprisingly good latte here - not the most foam or steamed milk but good coffee. Service was fast. I also liked that milk for coffee was kept in its own mini fridge. Lots of food options, which was a great touch. I literally live a block away from this place, so I've never had the desire to actually go in since it'd be hard to justify the cost of a sandwich when I could just go home and eat for free. But a perfect storm of events finally led me here - I bought a Google Offers, and I had a buddy in the area apartment hunting. It was a little before noon, and there were a few people just reading newspapers or having conversations over breakfast. When we walked in, there was just one guy working the register, and he was also the one making the sandwiches. Luckily, we were at the front of the line, because everyone who came after us had to wait for the poor guy to make us our two meals. I had the "Southern Smoke", which wasn't very southern or smokey. It had turkey, ham, red peppers, cheese and some other stuff. It was delicious. Nothing like freshly sliced deli meat. It was also a huge sandwich. Only complaint is that the guy at the register had no idea how to use Google Offers. He didn't know how to redeem it, so just charged me whatever the paper said for my meal. It also took a long time to agree on that solution. Anyway, 4.5 stars for the sandwich. 2.5 stars for the service. Also, for some strange reason, they had NO ICE in the store. I've never visited the facility so I can't comment on how it is in person, but I had lunch delivered today. I got a steak fajita panini, which was actually very tasty. Fries, which were alright...and the thing that makes this review 2 stars. The soup. I ordered a chicken noodle soup. As soon as I opened it it looked a little neon yellow and similar to a canned brand. But I've ordered the soup before, and while it wasn't anything to write home about the first time it was decent for what it was. However this time, one bite in and I had to spit it out. The soup was completely rancid. I put my nose up to the cup and got hit in the face with a very off smell. It was so, incredibly sour and unfortunately because I was on my lunch break I didn't have time to call and discuss it further. Its about an hour later and my stomach is in knots. Wonderful NY deli with quality stuff and fantastic selection, on a street overpopulated with sub-par bodegas. The bagels are large and fluffy and there's a good assortment of cream cheeses, vegan flavors included. Iced coffee was tasty and flavorful, and this is from someone who usually only drinks cold brew. A few tables and chairs to keep you from the bustle of 4th Av. Helpful, friendly, and patient staff. Really great deli just off the train at Atlantic/Barclays. I used to go almost every morning after the gym before work for a green smoothie or breakfast wrap. I've been back a few times now as gyms and offices start reopening after the COVID-19 shutdown, and Usman greeted me by name as soon as I walked in the door! Remembered my order too. When he finally brought it to the cashier he didn't tell me. I see him standing back there and I'm look at him like where is the food, he just points that he set it up by the cashier. I'm eating in clearly sitting at a table with coffee they wrap it up like I'm taking it with me. The home fries had absolutely no flavor. While in Park Slope doing some kind favors for a friend, I walked along his neighborhood. Though Fifth Avenue yields some amazing places to eat and drink, I was looking for more of an "I can either scarf this in five minutes or bring this on the D Train with me" kind of dinner. I decided Fifth Avenue was not the place to be, and a quick stroll onto Fourth Avenue lead me to this shining beacon of light boasting a cheap, quick meal. I was impressed with their large variety of sandwich options, from paninis to burgers to wraps to plain ol' sandwiches. A board out on the avenue boasted a falafel wrap, and I'm a girl who can not say no to falafel! I ordered that, along with a Honeybee chamomile iced tea (...my newest obsession in life, thank you, Canteen...). $8.50 altogether. Not bad. The most expensive sandwich I saw on the menu was $6.95, which is dirt cheap by NYC standards, I must say. My wrap was rather tasty! The falafel was obviously fresh and fried to order, tightly sealed in a wrap with veggies and tahini. Some hummus might have been nice addition; while the falafel was flavorful, the wrap as a whole could have used a little extra *oomph*. The place itself is shiny and clean, with large windows overlooking Fourth Avenue to the south and west. About five mini-tables allow you to eat and people watch. It's great for catching a 7:30 p.m. dusty rose-colored sunset, I must say. The staff? Extremely friendly and accommodating. I was the only customer at the time and was treated like royalty. I can only hope and assume customer service is usually this good...? Well, if I ever need a quick bite to eat in that neighborhood again, I know where to go. Canteen is another welcome addition to the burgeoning north end of 4th Avenue, what with all the bars and Mule looking lonely. For starters, it's a deli (no matter the name; it's really just a ten-seat joint where you can sit down after you've ordered), which means the name of the game is sandwiches, soups, and some sorts of convenience. They have a pretty good selection of what you can nosh on, from a really tasty lentil chili soup to a solid Rhode Island clam chowder (I'd never heard of it either; apparently it's an in-between of New England and Manhattan). A large bowl of soup won't run you down more than $5, and maybe a bag of chips or a can of Pringles can sate a soup craving. If you're wanting something bigger the sandwiches are fantastic. A house specialty is the "Russki" panino: flatbread, roast beef, Muenster cheese, caramelized onions, and Russian dressing. I can eat this stuff for days on end. They also serve coffee and hot beverages. Coming out of the subway at Atlantic Ave. - Pacific St., the best way to start a cold winter walk home is a tall serving of hot chocolate. read more

I really like this place. The guy who owns it now is always there and always nice (not that the previous owner wasn't nice, just saying). It's a nice space with free WiFi I believe. Only four stars because I generally get the same sandwich every time ("southern smoke", which is an odd name for a really good turkey/ham combo), so I can't speak to the quality of the whole menu. I thought Canteen would be a nice replacement for the bodega that used to be in its spot, but I'm not sure yet. We ordered a sandwich to share, and it was huge. It had a combo of meats, served on a hoagie roll. Not sure if it needed more mustard, maybe a pickle, or some veggies, but it was too salty, and the top side of the bread was hard, like it had been over-toasted (but this was not a hot sandwich). Oh, Canteen. You are so middle-of-the road, and yet you get my business ALL THE TIME. What? Why? Well, for starters, you bought prime real estate on the way to every flipping subway line serviced by the Atlantic/Pacific station (read, mainly the N-D), and are *right there* to save me a detour to the superior but less convenient lure of 5th avenue. Before you, Canteen, I frequented some (let's face it) superior delis, but now I am a (lazy) creature of habit and I see you nearly daily. Canteen Pros: nice (cute) guys behind the counter, who will deliver a sammich and a drink to your door pretty swiftly. This is especially nice when you are ill and do not wish to experience NYC's psychotic weather. Said sammich: I am a grilled cheese addict. These guys don't mind that I despise American cheese and white bread. They make me bizarro grilled cheeses and do it well. I have to say though, I agree with people in other reviews who feel kind of "meh" about their own sammich experiences. I would not order a much more complicated dish, other than maybe a burger. Good soups: I am a creature of habit and haven't gone beyond tomato-cheddar or chicken noodle, but those were tasty. Cons/notes: sometimes in the morning it can take umpteen years to pay for something simple and cold. If you are going to stay open until 10, please don't shut your grill off at 9pm. :-( Canteen, if you are not going to sell Teas Tea anymore, take it off your menu and quit taunting me already. I stopped by here late Sunday night, on my way to a bar that doesn't serve food, and feeling quite peckish. I've passed by this place literally hundreds of times while walking to the subway, and had never been inside, although the placed looked like an inviting, albeit generic deli. Anyway, they have a decent selection of sandwiches, wraps, burgers, and salads. I ordered the chicken parm panini, nothing too unusual. Here's where the problem begins. A, the chicken is heated in the microwave. Fine, I understand this is late at night, that's an acceptable trade-off. B, instead of the tomato sauce advertised on the menu, they squeeze ketchup on. Gross. Ketchup is way too sweet for this kind of sandwich and doesn't have the right texture. Enough about the preparation. How did the panini actually taste? Well, not too good. The panini was very dry, and although the chicken was fine, the ketchup didn't help and where tomato sauce should have gone there was nothing. The mozzarella was thin to the point of non-existence, and finally, there was no basil, as was also mentioned on the menu. On the plus side, the sandwich was $7.04, and the owner or manager was nice enough to only ask for $7. That was a nice bit of customer service. Also, they were pretty fast. So friendly! Great sandwiches and bagels plus the coffee is always fresh. The staff here goes out of their way to smile and greet you. I stop in here 3 times a week on my way to a rehearsal in Brooklyn and they're starting to get to know me. This is the type of neighborhood place that makes New York amazing and the people here live up to my high NYC standards! Once I was short 59 cents on an order and when I told him to take off an item, he said "just give me what you have" and let me keep my order.
