And River Park is so far my favourite in the entire city. Granted, 10 parks doesn't mean I've seen them all. Heck no - there are 149! (Did you know that?) But... - there's a river accessible but not too close to the park for dogs that like to leap before looking (like mine) - amazing volunteers who help keep the park clean - baggies available almost all the time for when you forget yours - 3 huge garbage bins - views of downtown, river valley... ahhh... I love watching people float down the river in the summer! - tons of trees, bushes, etc. making it a really beautiful park to be in during the spring, summer and fall - no "pathways" through the park, bringing a grey area to right-of-way and safety of your pet - CLOSE TO HOME! Why did I give it 4 stars before? The parking. But, compared to other parks, it's a breeze. I'll forgive the busy parking lot from the rafters for a few weeks in the summer for all the other advantages this park brings. It's also one of the cleaner dog parks too (meaning people properly pick up after their dogs, for the most part). It's also one of the bigger off-leash areas in the city. The only downside would be the parking lot and school congestion during weekdays. However, there is plenty of parking on the street. After the May long weekend, the city installs a fountain for both people and their canine companions (which is excellent in the summer).

We visit this park several times a week and really appreciate all the work that has been put into it. Maverick gives it two paws up.

The ability to go for a walk was not. This is not a park that allows dogs off-leash or a park with a dog park, this is very much a giant dog park. If you don't have a dog this is not a place to go for a walk. It's a super cool dog park! There are a bunch of different fenced in areas, including a huge agility course and river access. It seemed new and well maintained. The highway noise is pretty intense, but worth putting up with to enjoy letting your dog run and socialize.

Unfortunately this park has recently increased in volume of people and it's a shame because it has attracted a high number of dog owners who treat the park like a free for all and are not watching their dogs so more poop is being left behind and the dogs are not under control when they need to be. We recently had two incidents with a dog owner who completely disregarded the off-leash by-laws and his large dog chased our small dog and rolled her and bit her like she was a stuffy toy it was playing with. The owner couldn't of cared less. He just shook his head and reacted like "oh well" and he's not the only one. Their are number of older folks and some small children that use this park as well and this type of behavior is increasing so be aware if you do choose to go to this park. Parking is a little tough to find but we finally parked on on New St (Ave?) and that worked out fine. We saw 2 dogs when first arriving and that was it for our entire visit. There are some pluses to this park... it's near the river, so if you're not nervous about your dog and the current, would be a nice place to swim them (unfortunately, mine is 17 lbs and thinks she's stronger than she is, so if I let her to her own devices she'd be floating down the Bow in no time). It's also a little hilly and has some nice trees - I bet it's a pretty place in the summer. However, it seems that you're always too close to some sort of "danger" zone... either the street, the river or the pathway. I'm a little confused about the pathway going right through an off leash park. If a cyclist were to hit my dog, who would be the party at fault: me (and my dog) or the cyclist? I think there's ~50 acres of land with plenty of well-maintained walkways for walking, jogging, biking. This seems like a perfect place to go on a date, walk around a bit during a work break, read a book on the many places to sit there, or just walk/jog like I did. There is also a cafe located near the center in the park. Unfortunately it was closed when I visited but I heard it's good!

There are paved walking paths and gravel trails - all very well maintained. We saw lots of geese and ducks and butterflies too - it was surprisingly peaceful! I imagine this would be a great place for migratory bird watching when the time is right! Lots of articles call this park the "heart" of Calgary...it certainly is popular but I can see why. It's lovely - there's tons of flower gardens, some native bee habitats, and it's surrounded by the Bow river on all sides and even has a lagoon that you can ice skate on in winter. Calgary holds lots of festivals here. There are picnic areas and playgrounds and even a cute little cafe. Several bridges connect it to downtown Calgary and one of them connects you to the other more northern side as well. It's very walkable and easy to access - I'd definitely say it's handicap accessible as a good portion of the paths are paved and flat. There are lots of info signs dotted around the island as well. Definitely a must see when visiting the city! We loved it!

I like this park for the hills and trees... there are a number of different paths you can travel along, which makes it a more interesting experience than those parks with only one main path. It's not fully fenced but it's never been an issue for me. The people are friendly and there are some great views of downtown - even benches if you want to take a breather and just relax. The hills can get icy in the winter, especially the tree-protected ones near the first parking lot, so be careful and wear proper footwear. You could walk upto the Bow and listen to the relaxing sound of water. This is not an off leash park. I met a few furry friends who were on leash, of course. Park is better than a mall, no doubt:)

I've seen several people on the bigger pond kayaking around. Always good for people walking, jogging, spending time with family, kayaking, and taking pictures. Lots of people walk their dogs here, and as an In the fall, the changing colours are lovely to see here. It goes quickly though, so make sure you get down there when the leaves start to turn as they won't wait for you. It's a good area to see birds too. Geese are here it seems all year round. I think there are other seasonal / migratory birds which pass through the area as well. White American Pelicans summer along this stretch of the river during the summer. I've seen whitetail deer in this area a number of times. It's highly probably that there are occasional coyotes in the area and so like in many Calgary parks, be watchful of your dog. It's a wonderful park if this is your area.
