The location is gobsmackingly beautiful - see photo. We also visited the Josie Morris Cabin, and riverside boat landings and campgrounds three times total during our stay. On one of these drives, I hiked up to the lizard petroglyphs for a closer look, keeping a respectful distance on the rocky ledge. Birdwatching was wonderful, rangers were very helpful and informative, and the visitor center's gift shop had everything an indulgent grandparent could ever wish for.

They have hammock sites (where you could just set up hammocks to sleep in outside), teepees, RV sites, tent sites. Pretty much anything you could want. We went during the week and there was plenty of camping sites available. Though if it was full you would be right on top of your neighbors. Thankfully for us there was hardly anyone there. The camping area is not too far from the boat ramp. So it was easy to take our paddleboards and kayaks down and then drive back up and hit the water. The views here are so lovely. Really so unique. The reds and whites in the mountains and seeing all the rock layers. Make playing in the water pretty awesome. During the day there seemed to be a lot of users. Not as much as some of teh local lakes to me in Colorado but still busy. If you are wanting to rent a watercraft you would want to get there sooner rather than later. Not sure how their rental policy is working now as we brought our own kayaks and paddleboards this time. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. It was calm and peaceful and relaxing. Would definitely come back.

The camp sites are on asphalt (easy to level!) and have great views of the water below. Not much by way of shade, so it can get hot in the summer. If you don't have an RV or tent, you can rent one of tiny houses. There are picnic tables and barbecue grills available too. It's a great little park for water recreating for a day or two. Not sure it would be a place i'd spend a full week, but it's worth a short visit!

OK... realize Vernal is nowhere near the size of a big city - so set your expectations accordingly…read more- and you'll quickly realize that - wow - this place has so much more than you'd expect as a result. When you go in, there's a movie that sets the stage. Can get boring for kids, yet works well for adults. Then, you just follow the route through about six or seven rooms ranging from a fossil dig, to history going back to the dinosaur age, to geologic history, along with a room that is "find the ancient animal" that kids love. Once finished, you've gradually moved from the 1st floor to the 2nd. There's a few more small exhibits. Then... outside is a route that goes around much of the building that has life-size recreated dinosaurs in their habitats. Takes about 90 minutes to do the whole thing depending on whether you are just adults, or have kids that are interested.

This is not your average museum - think of it as a cross between a frontier museum and an antique shop. Things aren't arranged in esoteric displays 10 feet behind velvet ropes. There's so much to see, and it's all right in front of you, crowded and jostling for attention like antique store treasures. The highlight for me was certainly the mounted heads of a two-headed calf. The museum is not very popular, so chances are you'll have the whole place to yourself to gawk at your leisure. By far the most interesting museum I've ever been to.

Rifle is mostly known for Shooter's Grill: A Gun-themed and old-timey American restaurant serving traditional breakfast, burgers & steaks. The town is incredibly friendly, super diverse with the best hospitality I've seen in a long time. The City of Rile is breathtaking during the winter because of the blinding white snow and deer. We spotted a few Mesas, which is fairly rare in Colorado. We absolutely enjoyed the homestyle pizza pies and Mexican ice cream in the shopping center of Rifle! My new favorite town that is enriched with history. We spotted a museum that talks about the great land that Rifle resides on was once in the heart of the Ute Nation, a classification of the Indigenous peoples of the Great Basin. For other tourist attractions, it is popular with rock climbers and the Rifle Falls Fish Hatchery. You can also explore the blessed icy caves at Rifle Falls State Park. Bring Crampons and Trekking Poles during the winter. It is beautiful waterfalls during the summer. there is a bridge; Rifle Bridge in winter on the Colorado River. The bridge, built in 1909, is now closed to traffic and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

I kept hearing people talking about the "wall of bones" and I knew that I needed to make my way…read moreover there. By way of the Dinosaur National Monument and a short shuttle ride, I was face to face with real dinosaur bones. There were a few bones that guests are allowed to touch too! The wall has been surrounded by a building to preserve it and make it easier to access. I was equally fascinated by the historical pictures that show when these fossils were found and the people many years ago that flocked to enjoy them. Especially impressive were the women in the floor length dresses, as was the fashion in those days, walking along the rocks to get a glimpse of the massive artifacts. They've done a nice job to preserve this site and make it available to interested people, like myself. I'm glad I made the trip!
