Capital Martial Arts Academy is a family community. They are incredible welcoming and amazing at teaching life lessons on and off the mat. They are true to their student creed and every drill starts trying to diffuse the situation. The instructors keep everything age appropriate and I know my girls are training safely. My daughter started at 4 at CMAA. We were walking by, and it looked like so much fun, and the instructors were so energetic we wanted to sign up. After a year of watching classes and parent involvement in the little ninja class, I joined to adult class. I have developed a new sense of confidence as a mom that I wasn't expecting. I just enrolled my little guy in. he just turned 4 recently and being mostly a covid kid, preschool has been quite a rough adjustment for him so I figured some after school outside structured activities with other children in his age group would be necessary in preparing him for the big big world of kindergarten next year. I was a bit nervous about him taking this since he's never done any type of sport and takes quite a bit of time warming up to people. they are amazing here. all the staff are super friendly, passionate and very patient with this tiny group of kids. My son loves going to CMAA, he is coming up on one year and to be honest I didn't think he would last a month especially since we started him not too long before daylight savings ended and he would be leaving "in the dark" as he says. There is an old school tradition mixed with a modern teaching style that separates Master D and Staff from the other schools on Alexandria. I come here at least once a week for the private group fitness class that Natashia instructs. And I know I complain during the classes with some of the workouts but man it's so worth it! I always tell her I'm not coming back but sure enough the following week I'm back at it. She's the sweetest and really is attentive on your goals, body and form. CMAA is a wonderful for children and adults to train. The staff has decades of experience and knowledge and are especially wonderful and skilled with training children. My children train here and I have noticed all the wonderful things a parent loves to see such as more discipline, motivation, and focus. Most of all, the kids have fun without even realizing that they're learning all of these necessary skills. I am also a student and the training here is also geared towards adults as they have a fitness class twice a week that incorporates martial arts techniques while building cardiorespiratory endurance! I have become stronger, more flexible, and my stress levels have decreased dramatically! Being a member of the military stationed at Fort Belvoir, it also helps that CMAA is conveniently located just outside of the Beulah Road gate. The master instructor is the son of a retired Navy Master Chief and he has even gone so far as to send care packages to his deployed military students. After extended frustrations with our 6th grader's school - Hunt Valley Elementary, (high tolerance for bullying, lack of communication, cliquey, not welcoming to newcomers) with no option other than homeschool, we shifted our focus to support tactics. Our son is thriving with the staff at CMAA. They see him as a person, an individual. He isn't coddled but he IS motivated and rewarded. An employee was happy to sit down and explain things to be but refused to give me a price. Who does that? CMAA is the best: period, full stop. My kids have been training with the studio for years. The instructors are caring but firm and teach discipline, accountability, and perseverance along with punches and kicks. This is no black belt factory where your child will move on to the next belt level just because a certain amount of time has passed. Students earn their progress at this school. The quality of instruction is equally good from the Little Ninja level (where one of my daughters began) through the adult classes where I now participate. Both of my daughters have continued to train after earning their black belts not only because it's fun but because at this point CMAA feels like home. Highly recommend! read more

A little while back I decided i wanted to do Martial Arts and get a nice kick back into shape. I saw the reviews for this place so i decided to go check it out. As soon as i walked in a very polite woman by the name of Ms. Nguyen came in and assisted me, she told me about the 2-week trial period and i gave it a shot. The staff was excellent, everyone there was supportive and helped me out along the way step-by-step. All the instructors were polite and very patient with me knowing very well i had no experience. After my two week trial was over I sat down and they went over plans and rates with me. As a student who works full and takes full time classes they were able to accommodate me with everything and gave me a even greater rate. I have noticed that I have lost a significant amount of weight and i am in better shape than i've been in my whole life. Few Facts: We have two children attending CMAA (in little Ninja's and Juniors). We had been at 2 other local facilities prior to CMAA. We have been at CMA for about a year. PROS: Great instructor to child ratio. Excellent teachers. Lots of options for times to attend class. Well organized. Little to no turn over of staff. CONS: Limited space for Parents to sit. Not always great communication with the Parents (teachers are always on the floor). Other comments: They offer a lot of events and camps to keep a "family" feel. Classes will always run long (which can be a benefit if you have errands to run!). We have really enjoyed our experience and look forward to many years at CMAA read more

We love CMAA. The staff is wonderful. They take their cues from the Master instructor who manages to balance a fun environment with physical fitness and the discipline you expect from martial arts. They truly care about the children and will go out of their way to help kids who are struggling to improve their skills. CMAA teaches students not only Tae Kwon Do but also important life skills such as respect, focus and perserverance. Both of my children attend CMAA. They work hard but have a great time doing it. The youngest began in the LIttle Ninjas program. That curriculum is designed for younger students and really fostered a love of TKD in my daughter that remains in the junior program. Both girls have progressed steadily but this is no belt factory. They know that they will only achieve the next belt level when they have earned it. If I child falls a little short, they encourage the child and help them fix their deficiencies so that the failure to progress does not impact their self esteem. This sense of accountability is perhaps the most important take-away for them. I have also enjoyed participating in the Capitol Fit kick-boxing class. I have always maintained a pretty decent fitness level, but these cardio strength classes are a fantastic way to tone up and increase cardio fitness. I can see a difference in how I look and feel a difference in my endurance. We wouldn't have our kids train anywhere else. read more
