Capitola boat and bait is a small wooden shop way out on the Capitola Pier. They have roughly 10 or so four person motorized skiffs with life vests that you can rent by the hour or for $75 per day. You better make reservations a few days in advance, or a week in advance on holiday weekends though as they always sell out. Every time I go, I see a line of people who can't get a boat. They also rent fishing poles for $10 a day and will custom set it up for whatever type of fish you want to catch. The boats have to be back in by 3pm (because often the fog starts coming in) but you can exchange your deep ocean rods for pier rods and keep fishing on your same rental fee. They give you a loaner bag of tackle in case yours gets stuck on the rocky bottom. You can also get buckets, gaffs, nets, and bait for your trip. Don't forget the motion sickness pills which they also sell. Last time I took my marine GPS and they added 12 waypoints to it's memory through the NMEA 0183 serial port of good places to fish, and of course, to find my way back to the pier should the fog roll in too fast. Since they don't go out with you, I STRONGLY advise taking a GPS or at least a 911GPS enabled cell phone with you in case of emergencies. I like to rent a boat first thing in the morning, fish until I'm hungry, then come back and tie up at the pier and eat my lunch. Then I go back out until 3pm and come back. They don't have any problems with you leaving the boat at the pier while you take a break, eat, or buy more motion sickness pills. The staff can seem a bit gruff, but I think it's mainly frustration from people not listening to them. After you go there a few times and they recognize you, they warm up a lot. One word of advice though, is pay for everything when you return the boat. If you pay for anything before you go out, keep your receipts because sometimes it gets charged to your boat and you have to prove you already paid them. You can get updated fishing reports from the boaters coming back here: http://capitolaboatandbait.com/category/fishing-reports The game warden often hangs out on the pier to inspect boats coming back, so be certain of your fish and your regulations before starting to fish.

Absolutely phenomenal ASA 101 experience with Pacific Sail!…read more I had the pleasure of learning from Dylan and Darrel, and I couldn't have asked for a better team. Both instructors took the time to thoroughly cover the material--balancing hands-on learning with classroom-style instruction (Darrel even led lessons right in the hull of the boat!). We practiced tacking, jibing, tied a variety of useful knots, and learned all the parts of the boat in a way that was both fun and deeply informative. Even during wild weather (30+ knot gusts that caused racers to retire their boats!) and a brief engine hiccup, the experience was safe, empowering, and invaluable. I learned not just the textbook approach to handling situations like a man overboard, but also real-world knowledge--like how to troubleshoot engine issues (thanks, Dylan!) and who to call in a marine emergency (thanks, Darrel!). Dylan's patience and steady encouragement made sailing feel approachable, even when conditions were intense. Darrel brought humor, depth, and thoughtfulness to every moment--together, they're a truly outstanding teaching duo. I also had the chance to meet Kate, another instructor, who was all smiles and incredibly helpful, waving while passing up on her tow boat and then cracking jokes to Darrel when she prepared for her Chardonnay crew to take off. On land, Natalie and Ethan from the front desk were warm and welcoming. Natalie and Ethan even walked me over to the boat with my coffee in hand to make sure I didn't get lost. I left this course genuinely feeling like I have a solid foundation in sailing--both in skill and confidence. I highly recommend Pacific Sail to anyone looking to start their sailing journey. This team is the real deal!

They were good with communication, met us at the top of the dock promptly, welcomed us onboard, laid out the trip plan, kept the boat on a very level keel, calmly set the foresail on a comfortable tact, was social but unobtrusive as we shared memories, songs and released my brothers ashes and flowers into the beautiful bay. He then offered us a bag of rose petals to cast in and gently followed the trail of flowers so we could be with my brothers ashes longer. A real pro. When we returned to the dock, Joe provided us with a personalized memory card with my brothera name and the coordinates of where we released him. He did a great job of a very comfortable ride for all us in slightly uncomfortable conditions. We now have lovely memories of our shared send off. Thank You both very much. Suzanne and family

I had to postpone our first attempt and rescheduled one week after. Scott or Krista sent us the detailed email message. It was very helpful. Mike was the skipper. He was very nice and polite. He did the Naval bell ringing. He brought some roses. First, I let go off the Urn while both of us scattered the roses we brought. He brought yellow roses. I took Red rose petals. After we scattered them, we were able to see and follow the Urn with the red rose petals and the bright yellow roses closer to the Urn. He navigated the boat very gently and able to see the Urn. The morning was quiet, sunny and calm. It was extremely calm during the entire time, he navigated around the Urn, getting closer to the floating Urn. It was calming me to see her floating surrounded by flowers. My mother was slowly but surely sinking. I watched her floating, while Mike took few photos and sent them to me. Mike also honored my mother with "Naval Bell Ringing". It was a very nice, beautiful, sunny and calm morning for my mom to be floating on the ocean water. Thank you, Mike, Scott and Krista for sailing my mother and me to the Sea and sharing the most precious moments in our lives. Sup Shack was unexpectedly closed (hours and webpage said they were open, the number listed didn't connect, and there was no note). The Hostess at Crow's Nest recommended Kayak Connection! It turned out to be a phenomenal experience! Milan (sp?) talked us through everything, made sure we all had well-fitted life vests, and the office recognized my step-daughter's 16th birthday with a free Santa Cruz sticker. It's true that the construction impedes the experience to an extent- Milan had to call the foreman to have us escorted through, but they did so promptly ensuring minimal disruption of our experience. We got assistance boarding, and we were especially impressed with Milan's patience with my step-daughter, who has Down Syndrome and needed some extra help. He was super patient and kind! We really appreciated that, unlike with Sup Shack, we were given "free rein" during our hour outing, except for needing to follow common sense safety rules. As soon as we were done, we called the number on the kayak paddles, and Milan was down in a jiffy to assist us back. We saw a seal, quite a few crab, many birds, and friendly boaters. We felt the price of $65 for an hour per double kayak (including life vests, paddles, the kayak, and assistance) was a very fair value. Highly recommend this exceptional and reliable business for your next outing!
