Pioneer Park is the perfect combination of a beautiful outdoor park plus the chance to take in some…read morelocal history. When you first enter the park you're greeted by a row of hand-built, historical buildings made by Whatcom County's earliest settlers and relocated to (what would eventually become) Pioneer Park. If you go on a day that some of the houses are open, for a small donation you can take a tour hosted by volunteers who know pretty much everything about the history of Ferndale and the county! The tour houses are set up with relics from the past - it's so interesting to see how the early settlers lived. Past the houses are open spaces where concerts are held, and the iconic barn which is the home of weddings, dances, and beer gardens throughout the summer. It's always fun to attend one of Pioneer Park's signature events, the Old Settlers Festival, where you are greeted with a ribbon denoting how long you've lived in these here parts, and then you get to enjoy the various vendors (and of course food!) before embarking to the barn where you will pretty much run into everyone you've ever known! Pioneer Park is also home to the beautiful and amazing Star Park, a children's playground build entirely by community volunteers. So now there are fun things for the little ones to do here, too!

While the building (the downtown location) is old, the books are very well organized and kept clean. My only "complaint" is their hours on the weekend. They are only open from 1pm to 5pm on Sunday. Fast forward to just a few weeks ago, and they've transformed this creosote-scented landmark into a place of beauty. We were lucky to be there on a warm, sunny day. We walked out to the end and took it all in. From views of Lummi and Orcas Islands to the west, Mt. Baker to the east, and even some humongous-looking crabs wandering the shallow depths beneath the bridge, it was a delightful (and free!) way to spend some time in nature.

If you've spent any length of time in Bellingham, you've no doubt heard of Jody Bergsma, her…read moretalented family and her iconic photographs. I first encountered her photos at the annual Allied Arts Festival, only later discovering the Bergsma Gallery which, ironically, is located not far from our house. It's a large space, with perfectly lit photos in all sizes - from small to "sofa sized". Walking through here is like walking through the landmarks and beautiful scenes that are the reason people move to this area. And the staff is very friendly, not pushy in the least, and understand if you're just there to browse. Prices are high here for the professionally framed and matted prints, but they also have smaller format prints, postcards, and other more affordable items so pretty much anyone can afford to take some Bergsma home with them.
