Maybe I'm cheap - or maybe it's a sign of the times - but $15 for a beer, $20 for fries... I just can't justify the price for what you're getting. Our first visit to Cara Cara was spectacular! My lovely wife heard about this wonderful restaurant and made reservations for lunch. It is located on the roof of the Proper Hotel. We were greeted by a friendly gentleman on the ground floor and after a brief wait we were invited to take the elevator to the restaurant level. Upon exiting the elevator we entered the bar that opens onto the outdoor rooftop dining area. The views from the restaurant are breathtaking with a panorama of Los Angeles spread out in front of us. We were seated with a beautiful view of downtown. It felt like we were dining in the clouds! The menu has many tempting options. We ordered the Avocado Bruschetta, the Fall Squash Focaccia, the Mushroom Tacos and the Broccolini. We also added a Purple Paradise from the bar and a Latte for the driver. Yum! Drinks first; the latte was quite good but the purple paradise was really tasty with rum, ube , lime, and pineapple. This is definitely something to order again in the future! The avocado bruschetta reminded us more of avocado toast and less of bruschetta. It was very good though. The fall squash focaccia was the winner today. This delight was put together with warm luscious flatbread topped with a taste festival mix of squash, brown butter, lemon ricotta, rosemary, and chorizo. So delectable! The mushroom tacos included oyster mushrooms, Al pastor, habanero crema, and salsa roja. These were very good but the table next to us had the fish tacos which will be our taco order next time. They looked excellent and we will assess taste next time. The sautéed broccolini was accented with garlic and chili. We are huge broccolini fans and this version is one of the better ones we have had. We loved our first visit to Cara Cara. The views are stunning and the cuisine is scrumptious. I'd been curious about Cara Cara for awhile, so when a friend and I had tickets to a show at The Belasco around the corner, it was the perfect time to check it out. Unfortunately, I was left feeling a little disappointed. We had a reservation for 5:30 and were on time. We were told it would be at least 10 minutes for our table and to just wait in the bar area. When we were finally seated, we were given a small table right near the entrance, coincidentally the only one without a heater (it was about 55 degrees so it was chilly to say the least). Would have been nice to be seated closer to the perimeter so we could have a view. I ordered the cheese plate and my friend got the brisket tacos. Her tacos came out within 3 minutes (how were they cooked?). My dish was nowhere to be found. When the waiter came by about 10 minutes later, he seemed shocked that we didn't have it yet. Maybe the kitchen forgot to put it in? No real apology once it finally came out. I'd say it tasted fine, nothing super special or epic about it. Drinks are INSANELY expensive. One cocktail was $28. I know prices have gone up, but that's ridiculous. We stuck with Diet Coke. Overall, it's fine, but not a place I see myself needing to come back to. read more

On Friday night 08/15, we went into the Proper Hotel without a reservation for Cara Cara. I checked in with the front desk and the representative informed me that the wait time for Cara Cara is about 5-10 minutes. Cool, so we sat down at their "lobby". After, the front desk lady came up to us and informed us that the restaurant says the wait time will be 30 minutes or so. I'd say that's no problem and provided my contact information so they can text or call me when it's ready. So myself and my friend were walking around Downtown LA towards the crypto arena. We went back in about 30 minutes and checked in with a gentleman with a suit. He could not locate our reservation and I told him that the front desk lady should put us in queue earlier. He then told us to sit in the lobby again so he can check and while waiting for 15 minutes being by ourselves in the lobby, I had a gut feeling we were being ignored. We decided to leave and the gentleman said so sorry we couldn't locate your reservation on his iPad. Very upsetting because, it was some back and forth costing us one hour of our night. If you can't find the reservation just straight up let us know instead of having us wait an additional 15 minutes. The operations simply wasn't well and not proper. I've been to Cara Cara a few times now with groups of friends and I'd give it 3.5 stars if I could. Creative cocktails, nice rooftop vibe with views of DTLA and decent dishes. High price tags, but comparable to other rooftop restaurants in the area. I kind of hoped they updated their menu, but it was the same as last year. It would be nice if they had a few breakfast items as well. I've had the Mini Lobster Rolls, Farmer's Market Lettuces and fries and they were good, but not spectacular. My friends liked the burger, Wagyu brisket tacos, Cobb Salad and Piri Piri Chicken. I'll have to try those items next time. For drinks, I've had bubbly and the Blackberry Velvet, which tasted more berry than gin. Friends got Night in Tulum (tequila-based), Blood and Smoke (mezcal-based), Cara Carillo (espresso martini) and Aperol Spritz, which they all seemed to enjoy. Depending on where you sit, you might have a server or you may need to order at the bar. The staff are attentive and accommodating, especially the ones running food and busing tables. I've been to Cara Cara a few times and never had a chance to review, but this time I decided to try their Dine LA menu. Before I write my novel of a review I will say that the food is very good, but I think the price point is a bit too high which makes me feel like you're mostly paying for the views and the overall dining experience. Really good drink menu and some good dishes but let's behonest here...Cara Cara has probably one if the most beautiful views in downtown Los Angeles. The view from the top of the proper hotel is absolutely stunning and makes for an unforgettable dining experience. It's something i'd highly recommend you do for a date especially if you're looking to impress and the check will certainly reflect that. Now for the food: I split the Dine LA experience with a friend and between the two of us we were able to order all but one dish. For starters we did the White Trumpet Mushroom Focaccia and the cheese board with dates, marmalade, walnuts and figs. These were the only options and both were great. I absolutely hate mushrooms, but once I pulled the visible ones off that mini pizza, I devoured it. It was so good and a great size. I will say I wish there was more cheese given to us on the cheese board, especially since there were great portions of all the accompaniments. All in all solid start. For main course we opted for the chipotle cauliflower tacos and the hanger steak. Tacos were seasoned really well and chipotle flavoring was not overpowering. It was a very balanced bite and I'd definitely have it again. The steak was mostly salad and fries and could've used more salt. Yes, I was splitting it with my friend but if I had ordered it as my sole main dish, I would've been disappointed by that portion size. Not bad at all, just could've been better. The tacos came with Brussel sprouts on the side which were cooked very well. Outside of the items we chose, I have tried the Branzino before and know it's delicious so even though we didn't order it this time, highly recommend. For dessert it was chocolate walnut cookies which were good....but were cookies so hopefully they were hard to mess up....and the pink lady spiced cake which came with some sort of crumbles and sea salt caramel Gelato on the side....and holy cow. One of the best things I've ever put in my mouth was that combination of cake and Gelato. I'm going to go back and just order that because wow. All in all, the food was fine. Dessert saved it. Service was great, view was fantastic and even though I think it was a bit overpriced for an underseasoned steak and a lot of vegetables, I'd do it again for that view and that cake. 4 stars. I came here expecting good views and good drinks. Thankfully I got that AND good food! Purple Paradise - Think piña colada with lime. Although I got this for the ube , its flavor was nonexistent. Was still delicious ! Piri Piri Chicken - Great texture and Great flavor. Aioli was full of flavor and complimented the chicken. White mushroom focaccia - best dish of the night. The fontina cheese was soo tasty and the mushrooms were cooked great. This is a must try. Mac and Cheese - cheesey ooey goodness. I loved the breadcrumb addition. My only critique is that it was VERY peppery forward. At some times, too much. Basque cheesecake - If I had gotten the cheesecake with no toppings , I don't think I'd have been as impressed. I do promptly greeted asking me of my water preference. They do have Aqua Panna still which is my go to. The server, Queenie who was fabulous, took my order and made a few recommendations. Perfect for a couple photo ops should you desire We started with drinks, and the drinks are generally on point. I had the Liquid Gold, which I feel used to be better, with a more passion fruit forward flavor, but it was still good. For food, we began with mini lobster rolls, which actually had a nice amount of lobster meat, more then I expected. The seafood ceviche was really good, with chunks of scallops. As far as the entrees are concerned, they had a special Black and Blue burger, with blue cheese, that was tasty but could have used more blue cheese so you get that flavor with each bite. The wagyu tacos were ok, I was expecting something more to give it some pop so it stuck out, but that didn't happen. The hangar steak was cooked well and the seasoning on the outside wasn't bad. And the Piri Piri Fried chicken was really juicy on the inside with a nice crunch on the outside. I mean, hopefully that's the expectation with fried chicken, so it did its job. First checked in with the gentleman that was downstairs in the lobby. Took our name down and we waited in the seating area of the main restaurant downtown. Waited about five minutes. From there, we went up to the pool area where the hostess was right in front of the elevator to check us in. That was about another 10/15 or so. There's a bar area just inside which we grabbed a drink while waiting for our table. Even having a seat at the bar area, you get a view of the skyline of the city. But you can also, go over to the side where's more seating area and a fire pit. The weather was perfect so waiting for our table there was great. The view was beautiful with all the high rise building and apartments complex. Restaurant itself isn't that big and it's adjacent to the pool area. It's all outdoor open air. We got seated right across from the pool which was nice. Menu was limited but they have a good amount of signs that sounded great. We didn't know but when the food came out, portion wise in some dishes were pretty small. More tapas style meal. Tried the peri peri chicken which was nice. It basically chicken strips with dipping sauce. Wouldn't say it a full meal as that's basically what it comes with, chicken and sauce. The mushroom flatbread was good but literally the size of a little kids pizza. Clams, they were really good and the potion for that was nice. It had a good mixture with beans and chorizo I believe with bread for dipping. Also fires was nice as it did help filling you up. Good potion for that and we did notice that it was on majority of the everyone's table. Service was nice, friendly staff both with hostess and waitress/waiter. The building is beautiful and lots of parking next door for about $10. It's a cool roof top restaurant, service was great and the food was good. Definitely go there just for the ambiance. I was a little disappointed in my entree I ordered the crab pasta and I was expecting there to be chunks of crab in it. What I got is very little strings of what I thought was pieces of shredded cheese are actually the crab. The waitress was willing to replace my meal but it wasn't really her fault I just had expect for $34 pasta I would actually be able to see crab in my dish. It still tasted good regardless but felt a bit skimped But other than that all the other food was and drinks were great we had the carrot appetizer and the focaccia pizza both were exceptional read more

The fries were overly salty, and the calamari was honestly inedible. What made the experience worse was the service. We were a party of five, and there was little to no attentiveness throughout the meal--no check-ins, no effort to see if we needed anything. To top it off, they attempted to add a "large party" fee for just five people, along with a 6% "wellness fee." I don't believe customers should be responsible for covering a business's employee healthcare costs through hidden fees. Overall, not a place I would return to or recommend. read more
